The Smithsonian article hinted at it, but some enmity between Mary and Simon Peter was a thing in multiple old apocrypha that didn't get canonized. Mostly Simon Peter getting set up as a strawman protesting her presence so Jesus could say "no, actually, I do want her here". 'Simon Peter, annoyed at Mary's dominance of the conversation, tells Jesus, "My master, we cannot endure this woman who gets in our way and does not let any of us speak, though she talks all the time."' 'Mary defends herself, saying, "My master, I understand in my mind that I can come forward at any time to interpret what Pistis Sophia [the divine being who gives wisdom] has said, but I am afraid of Peter, because he threatens me and hates our gender." 'Jesus assures her, "Any of those filled with the spirit of light will come forward to interpret what I say: no one will be able to oppose them."' and that kind of thing just led me down a gnostic rabbithole lol

As someone who has actually studied church history and classics, the real irony is that the Christian stance on sex work was a really important issue in late antiquity. There was a lot of ink and papyrus expended on discussing this exact topic in 3rd and 4th century Alexandria. The growing idea of chastity as a Christian virtue alongside legally becoming first tolerated and then the state religion raised a big question. If an enslaved prostitute becomes a Christian, are they legally allowed to refuse to perform sex work based on their religion? If so vast swathes of the economy would collapse and it would undermine large parts of their system of slavery. If the people at this time believed Mary Magdalena was a prostitute, if that was even a possibility thousands of theologians would have discussed it in trying to resolve this legal dilemma. We'd still have writings about it surviving today. So it's clearly an anachronistic idea invented in later periods.

To be fair by historical evidence Judas was part of a Jewish faction that believed the Messiah was some kind of divine warrior king. That when he appeared he would rain judgement on the nonbelievers and create heaven on earth. With this view I’d imagine the Messiah he got in Jesus didn’t exactly live up to his expectations. His betrayal wasn’t because he wanted Jesus dead but because he wanted to push Jesus into becoming the active messiah his faction believed in. Remember the officials Judas handed Jesus over to didn’t have the legal authority to execute him. From Judas’ point of view imprisonment would force Jesus to use his powers to display to all his status as the messiah. Only Judas was wrong and Jesus refused to do what Judas expected even up to his death. I mean even in the bible Judas is horrified by what his actions caused and kills himself only days later. An execution was not what he wanted.

It scarcely shows greater faith to believe Jesus is the son of God if you KNOW he is the son of God because (unlike the disciples) you'd hung out in heaven once upon a time. That'd be like an astronaut complaining that people believed the Earth is flat when the astronaut has SEEN it's round (well, spheroid). And wouldn't Mary's vampire existence be ended by the Second Coming of Christ and the accompanying Apocalypse (assuming that happens, which it may not in this version). I mean, it would still suck (ha!) to be Mary M, but that's a (probably) a lot sooner than the heat death of the Universe

How this author can not see the apostles in a good light and and the same time try to free them of all of guilt for their actions? Like he do with Peter, if the apostles were nothing more than power hunger maniacs, show them as power hunger maniacs and not give any excuses for their misdeeds, that was lame. As lame as the idea that only sinners can become vampires.
@Bookwyrm555 жыл бұрын
Peter was not granted anything special... just that he was not himself when he betrayed Jesus in the novel. ALL of the apostles were selfish, full of themselves, and more worried about who would be in charge when Jesus was gone than they were about their faith - in the novel, anyway. There is nothing that says only sinners can be vampires either (not in the book, anyway) - Mary chooses to feed off of sinners ... anyone she fed off of came back.
