This was part of Too Late to Stop Now Tour...this band toured together for about a year and called themselves Caledonia Soul Orchestra. Many of these band members played with Van on and off over the years, some more than others. David Hayes and John Platana still play with Van regularly. Van was known to always change up his band and the musicians he worked with to change up his sound and explore different genres.

@@michaelkeefe8494 I like Patti Smith. I heard Jimi's version of Gloria first, then Van then Eric Burdon and finally some black blues legends at Antone's in Austin doing it. The rumors are Van Morrison lifted it from some early R & B and changed the name and some lyrics. I'm sure how the internet works, some more of that story emerges. Lots of songs we thought were originals were lifted from old black blues legends without copyright protection.

Van Morrison possibly the most prolific songwriter, musician, singer from Ireland, originally he played with a band called them, his solo work is astonishing I saw him live once and it was non stop until he walked off stage, he never did an encore.
@larryg7126
@larryg7126 Жыл бұрын
Van Morrison is the deepest hole you can crawl down, matched only by Dylan & Joni Mitchell in terms of lyrical content. Van started in a show band (basically a big band scene) in Ireland, his home country. He had solos where he played sax on his back on stage, ever the showman. This band was the Caledonia Soul Orchestra, but he's had many bands. He is also a multi instrumentalist. Funny story I read, one of his drummers said he would signal the drummer the meter using hand signals, one show he was motioning to slow the tempo, it got so slow the drummer said Van was gripping his hand like he was grabbing something, the drummer didn't know that sign. when the concert finished the drummer asked him backstage what did he want with that signal, Van laughed at him and said I was saying to you, you can't go any slower I got you by the balls now! Van has always been the man.

The movie immortalizes The Band’s final concert with all their musical guests including Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison and many more. It also gives the history of The Band (The Band is the bands name lol). The movie of the concert and interviews was directed by Martin Scorsese.

Van called this traveling group The Caledonia Soul Orchestra. He used them, along with his normal band, for the 1973-74 tour. A double live album from this tour, TOO LATE TO STOP NOW, is essential listening and is regarded as one of the best live albums from that era. I absolutely love Van Morrison, and this period of his career was magnificent. Thanks for this one! 👏

This is just part of the video that Van did called "It's too late to stop now. You should try to watch that whole video sometime as it has some really great theater that Van loves to create in addition to his music. Up on Cyprus Avenue is another part of this longer video and the bass player keeps asking if they are gonna bring out the shot glasses. I know the longer version might be too long to review formally, but you both will enjoy it as Van truly did exibit a soulful quality in his music. As I said, his dream when he was a young boy was to emulate Ray Charles.

He called them The Caledonia Soul Orchestra - the tour was about three months. The original album "It's Too Late to Stop Now" (the title comes from the last line of his song "Into The Mystic", which is also on this live album) was released in 1974, then an updated DVD was released in 2016 with performances from additional nights of that tour.

This is from his 3td solo album "Moondance," and incredible album worthy of a deep dive. The concert film/documentary The Last Waltz, directed by Martin Scorsese documenting the final live performance of the original line-up of The Band. They played their hits sbd brought up a bunch of musicians Thales recorded with or were just friends with the version of this song is far superior. The film is an absolute masterpiece and mandatory viewing for a wider musical education. The Band, with Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, The Staples Singers, Emmylou Harris, Ronnie Hawkins and some bonus footage with other legends. Van Morrison is one of the few contemporaries of The Beatles who is adamant that he wasn't at all inspired by them, but instead by jazz and RnB. His 2nd album "Astral Weeks" is another masterpiece, but very different. Recorded with him on vocals and acoustic guitar in one booth, and a small jazz ensemble he met on the day in the main room. Recorded in two days, plus one more for overdubs. It alludes to other music, but mostly because of its spontaneity, it sounds like nothing else. Kind of a folk jazx.

Van has a huge catalog. In a similar thought to you playing Jimi’s “Little Wing” last, Van deserves some care. Start with the “Astral Weeks” album as a reference point although you could go a little earlier. He has had many sidemen through the years. He writes, arranges and produces his albums, writes his own horn arrangements, plays guitar, saxophone, harmonica, etc. He has been going strong for more than 50 years.

Gentlemen. Dig deep into Van Morrison's 1974 live album 'It's Too Late to Stop Now'. Possibly the greatest live album ever recorded. Truly live. No studio overdubs or re-recording. It was recorded with the same musicians you just saw in gigs in the US and the UK. I read that Van is such a perfectionist that he wouldn't allow one of his most popular songs, Moondance, to be included on the album because of one wrong guitar note! Seriously brilliant album from an artist at the height of his powers.
