He wanted this to be his Terminator role. But Black Adam wasn’t nearly hard core enough. Rock tried turning the character into a sympathetic anti hero. Can’t have both. Black Adam being someone who kills his enemies does not have the impact Rock wants it to have since 95% of Marvel’s and 90% of the DCEU heroes all kill
@aaronmiles2802 Жыл бұрын
He should’ve gone all the way with who Black Adam actually is as a character:an Anti-Villain. Gone with the comics and have him take the life of his nephew or better yet allow his nephew to die and take his power, reasoning that his nephew wasn’t willing to go far enough to do what’s necessary to stop the king and free their people. Wayyy more compelling and a fresh take to the superhero movie world. Of course the Rock couldn’t resist his need to be seen as nothing more than a darker Superman.

The Rock’s biggest problem is himself. He’s a huge star, but he surrounds himself with no-name talent. He doesn’t work with huge directors, and his costars are either past their prime or unknowns, for the most part. He doesn’t want anyone around who can challenge him, push him, demand more from him. To quote Bane, victory has defeated him. For a guy who is so busy, he’s incredibly lazy from a creative standpoint. He was counting on this to be his retirement plan. He’s in his 50s now, and with all the sequels and shit this was supposed to generate, it would’ve kept him busy into his 60s. His time as an action star is fading. He’s closer to the end of his career than the beginning, and now that this plan to take over DC has failed, he’s running back to Moana, donating money to the actor strike to rehab his image and look good again, and pretending everything is fine. People aren’t paying for mediocrity anymore. That Red Notice movie was supposed to be a theatrical release with Universal, but they read the script, realized it was shit, and dumped the movie. He had to scamper off to Netflix to get it made, where we don’t have real numbers about how it did. If that was released in theaters, with that budget, it would’ve tanked. He’s bland, basic, and overrated. In 20 years, no one will be watching his shitty movies. They’ll be watching Terminator, Rambo, and Die Hard.

The fact we aren't getting that animated Shazam movie as a WrestleMania style event film is sad. Zachary Levi + Henry Cavill vs Dwayne Johnson should have been a no brainer to make. I blame Johnson's ego on this. He makes it in his contracts to never lose fights. So he would not allow people to make him the punching bag of two heroes. Black Adam is Shazam's arch enemy not Superman. People only put these two together because Adam can take Supes in a fight. I actually did like Black Adam for what it tried to do. Seeing the Justice Society was great but I wish the evil government ruling over Khandaq was the villains. Maybe give the leader a suit made of Eternium since it hurt Adam at the beginning. I was expecting that to be used against him, not a demon lord. The Shazam franchise was a huge waste of potential.

You could have it be Atom Smasher and Cyclone being inspired by the justice league to become heroes and eventually lead to Hawkman & Doctor Fate finding them and offering guidance. Then have it be explained the Justice Society did exist before the Justice League but establish that because of some tragedy they disbanded and the memories of them were erased or something. And after that point superheroes started popping up more with Superman, Flash, Etc, Batman eventually forming the new Justice League and more young heroes appearing finally inspiring the pair to come out of hiding/retirement. Idk I think with how unfocused this movie was trying to fit all these characters into Black Adam's supporting cast it really would've been better if they just made their own Justice Society movie personally.

The arc Black Adam goes on is great on paper but it all falls flat and feels very rushed and not very compelling especially with him befriending that boy. By the end Black Adam cares about modern day Kondak and its people but it's not convincing because the films lacks compelling bonding moments. This is the opposite to how in Shazam we see how Billy grows to care for his foster family and it feels legit, not just because the plot tells him he needs to

Yeah but the Star Wars Prequels except for the Phantom Menace are actually good.

The problem with this movie is its not even so much that it is a flop. Its just to have saved the DCEU it would have had to be a monumental success that just wasn't going to happen. Like it would have had to bring in like a bill minimum to have justified keeping the overall franchise going given all the bombs that came before it. And if anyone thinks I'm overestimating not really, the DCEU was running on so many fumes that it needed a true salvation to keep it going. Black Adam honestly just had too much on it which is a shame as I don't think the film is terrible. Its not particularly great but it would have been a passable dumb action film if it didn't have the weight of the world on it.
@bigbearkat2010 Жыл бұрын
I totally agree. The whole point of bringing in the Rock in the first place is that he's an action star who routinely brings in ticket sales, which is why he was given so much power over this movie. It's like when Tom Cruise was given so much creative control over The Mummy. The studio put up with his demands on the assumption his name above the title would make it a hit. Instead the movie became a glorified vanity project that became instantly forgotten outside of it's notoriety for showcasing the actor's ego.
@gwell2118 Жыл бұрын
@@bigbearkat2010 Oh lord yes, which was real shame as I liked the idea of the Universal Monsters universe, but cruise just tanked that movie into a total glory fest to himself.

That's exactly right. Because it didn't make A BILLION DOLLARS, they decided to just give up on what they had been building up to, for the last TEN YEARS!..... I feel like had they just continued with Man of Steel 2, it *WOULD* have made them a Billy, and then they could have made Superman vs Black Adam & the fan base would have been happy. ...... Now they've shit the bed, and I feel like DC is just fucked. Hopefully Gunn makes a good Superman. But Henry Cavill was PERFECTLY cast, & he should have just kept him. AND DJ as BA. Super sad

Want is Worse is this movie has be in development for over 10 years. Yes, before Man of steel or Batman v Superman. For a film that was 10 years in the making. This is bi-polar, it as some fresh and new ideas mix with early 2000's superhero movies and what you you end up with is a mixed bag of a Film.

I really hate the fact how this movie hyped up Superman’s return to the DCEU, with even Henry Cavill boasting about it on his IG, only for everything to be completely scrapped later on. This movie was just terrible on 2nd watch, and the most exhausting movie to sit through given how action-packed it was. Biggest mistake was not making this movie take place in the past so the Justice Society’s placement wouldn’t have been so awkward (and the perfect opportunity for Black Adam to kill off the Justice Society too). I think The Rock wanted to do a villain/anti-hero movie in the same way the Venom movies became popular and it all blew up in his face.

I think the biggest issue with the DCEU is that it lacks all the connective tissue that keeps DC Comics from sucking usually. And that's also the problem with the New 52. Plopping the JSA in like this just is another perfect reason it doesn't work. Imagine if we'd had a JSA trilogy. First movie is pre-WW2. Second movie is the trilogy's Empire Strikes Back, somewhat. The JSA wins by stopping the Nazis from winning, but also Hitler gets the Spear of Destiny and no longer can the JSA fight in the war. The third movie is post-war and covers the Fall of the JSA at the hands of Ragnarok and McCarthy.

Black Adam and Shazam Fury of the Gods should have been combined not the same movie. Both films had insane potential ad good ideas but both kind fumbles the final results. But I think taking what worked about both films and throw them together into one you might have the recipe for something truly special.

You do have some Strong points when you're talking about this movie and I agree with you on some things. This IS a Good movie and I enjoyed it, I honestly like this way that Black Adam came to be instead of the comic version I hope that we (or at least I) come to see more of this Black Adam in the movies than the comic version. It would be Cool to see how he goes up against Superman, Batman and others If they have Flash, they should have Grant's Flash instead of Miller's Flash (I saw that movie and TV Flash is way better).

"A rock? That is no rock." I actually liked the movie... and I don't exactly think that it "ruined" the DCEU... that was done long ago at this point, by Hamada, Johns, and probably numerous other figureheads at WB/DC. However, Dwayne DID put way too much stock in his star power and how much leverage that has given him in the movie industry. But the movie itself? Black Adam being an "anti-hero" isn't without precedent... he even fought alongside the JSA at one point, becoming good friends with Jay Garrick in particular. So... anyway, I liked the movie. But you make several valid points, too. You always do, Vee. And I will say... they killed.off Kent Nelson way too early. Dr. Fate had SO MUCH material to contribute to the Snyderverse moving forward... oh, wait. Nevermind.

Should have been a Shazam movie. Billy Bateson could have functioned in the T2kid role. Would have helped tie it all together. Different story of course. But would have help build the universe. It felt like a one off, with some great supporting characters with Fate and Hawkman and worst with the others.

I think they killed off doctor fate because the original Doctor fate dies. In the comics but his powers and soul lives on in the helmet. And his powers increase the powers of the next welder of his powers. At the cost of the original Doctor fate taking over the new user's body.

Allegedly, Dwayne Johnson is a proper Hollywood diva and his acting contracts contain a clause that states that he can never lose an on-screen fight. "Black Adam" strikes me as that clause extended to feature length, with the script playing out accordingly. Dwayne Johnson ambles through the on-screen world and things explode as if struck by a nuclear missile whenever he makes contact with them, to which he barely reacts (the scene where he walks through a wall is the perfect example of what I mean). There is no energy to anything he does but because the script demands he be an unstoppable force that's how things play out. His quips are forgettable as well. The high point of the movie is Pierce Brosnan's performance and I would gladly pay to watch a Dr. Fate standalone movie. My suggestion is to watch all the Pierce Brosnan scenes in the movie and skip all the rest.

It would have been nice to have a Justice Society film before this one. I enjoyed those characters quite a bit, and some more set up for them would have made Fate's, erm, fate, more powerful as well as develop the love story between the kids and the friendship between Fate and Hawkman

Let me get this straight. I haven’t seen this movie. I heard it wasn’t a bad movie I heard it wasn’t a great movie. From everything I have heard, basically though, it’s essentially just a case that the movie need to focus up. They need to make the script tighter, the cast leaner, the focus more poignant. Otherwise it was good, if flabby. To that end, outside of making the cast smaller, I think they really needed to focus on making a more memorable villain. Someone who could stand in contrast to the protagonist, and I think they should’ve also gone with Hawkgirl rather than Hawkman. She is the more recognizable character after the justice league animated series. She’s also far more beloved.

Black Adam didn't kill the DCEU. The DCEU up to that point was already dead. The movie that did that was BvS: Dawn of Martha and the over 50 percent second weekend BO drop it had. I know people personally who said they're not gonna bother watching another DCEU movie because they were so disappointed with BvS. Considering the BO returns for the DCEU movies (Bar Aquaman) a lot of the general movie going audiences were too. Imagine making a Batman and Superman movie, and that movie makes less than what a Captain Marvel and Black Panther movie does. That's not a reflection on the MCU, that's a reflection of how badly WB, Snyder botched those early DCEU movies. It's no coincidence that Joker and The Batman, two movies outside the DCEU are the only two DC movies that are loved by critics and fans. Here's hoping James Gunn and Peter Safran can wash away the stench the DCEU has had these past ten years.

My biggest issue with the movie is that Black Adam could have been a terminator 2 movie … but what was lacking is the focus and a well done “father-protector” relationship between the machine and the boy. The movie should have kept closer to terminator 2 plot points and beats … it had too much noise instead.
