It just confused me what they did with Carnage and Cassidy in this movie. In the comics, they’re a major threat because they’re actually far more compatible than Venom or anyone he’s ever bonded with. They’re so compatible, that Carnage has bonded to Cassidy’s blood, rather than his muscles or flesh, like most other symbiotes, making it far harder to remove Carnage from Cassidy, if not impossible to do so. It’s an integral part of Carnage’s character that Cassidy completes him, and that Cassidy feels the same way. While in the other hand, Venom and Eddy are always fighting, with Venom only keeping Brock on his side, because they both hate Spider-Man. In fact, the comics even have a point where Venom was bonded to Flash Thompson for a while, yeah, Spider-Man’s bully. And Venom was actually so unsure of whether or not he preferred Flash or Eddy, that he split himself in two, because he just couldn’t decide. Meanwhile, these Venom movies completely flip this on its head, suggesting that Venom and Eddy are actually far more compatible than Carnage and Cassidy, which makes the dynamic between all 4, far less interesting, since the hero’s don’t have to fight against a far better duo. The movie even goes as far as making Carnage far larger than Venom, when in every other incarnation, Carnage is less than half the size of Venom. It’s all surface level stuff, to make Carnage seem intimidating and more lethal than Venom, when they’ve undermined the **actual** reasons for why Carnage should be more lethal than Venom. Of course, the movies can’t go the route of having Eddy and Venom not be perfectly compatible. There is no Flash Thompson for Venom to become conflicted by, not even in the MCU, which, according to the ending of Venom 2, Venom is now officially a part of. So why bother having the interesting dynamic, where they have to put their differences aside, if everything that’s been established, will never give either of them any real challenge in that regard? Why put in the effort, if there’s no way to show that work to the audience? Modern movie making, and especially superhero movies, in a nutshell. Anyways, I’ve rambled long enough. No one is going to read all of this. Goodbye.
@Zeburaman20053 жыл бұрын
So that’s why Carnage always uses _I_ when referring to himself, whereas Venom invariably uses _we_ ! I’ve always thought it was just a way to show how big of a nutcase Cassidy was, yet I had never made that connection with the much closer symbiote bonding process than with Eddy.

I watch the first LOTR last night and said to someone next to me that, "This movie is timeless." The problem with Venom is that they are trying to go for the edgy anti-hero who is morally questionable but don't want to fully commit to it. In an alternate timeline we could've gotten something like the Joker, where a sympathetic villain goes down the road of darkness. Growing from a pushover weakling to someone with some backbone and perhaps going too far in some places, before just embracing it. They clearly don't want to commit to either one and might have been forced to shovel in the regular film filling that makes the world and characters pretty interchangeable. The love interest, the evil organisation, the bad guy who wants to harness the aliens for their own game, etc. All stuff that exists and is serviceable, for a plot, but won't surprise.

After seeing the film last night, a few thoughts: The first film wasn’t terrible but it was just ‘okay’. I believe Venom’s greatest hurdle was it’s trying to tell an origin story without being able to incorporate Peter Parker in any way. Ehh.. they tried. The action sequences however, felt a little less inspired, less ‘Venom’ and more Stretch Armstrong and acted as more of a crutch to make up for the fact he wasn’t able to web-sling etc. I felt ‘less is more’ may have been more effective as all we got to bear witness in the final act was the CGI equivalent of watching a silly string battle with awful camera cuts to try and inspire less yawning. Anyway. Moving along to the sequel, I imagined we could have moved past all the little stumbles as both Eddie and Venom got through their teething issues. I was expecting to see him hit the ground running. Perhaps he now had his life sorted out. Reporter by day and vigilante at night allowing the symbiote some freedom as the lethal protector? Nope. Still a loser. The ‘No eating allowed’ signs were almost like the punctuation mark to follow on from the wackiness an unstable relationship provides, right? The only lethal protector we got was more of a passing joke that never really felt funny. More of a promise of how things could have been were the script given some actual care. So they latched onto very select bits of the Maximum Carnage storyline and all we got out of it were a couple of two dimensional jeering villains coupled with a bland revenge backdrop. There was no real stake ominously lurking behind whether the hero wins or loses. By the time the post credits scene rolled, it was the first time I actually hoped there would be no implied cross over. A limp, lifeless sequel that comes across as nothing more than an afterthought.

They could’ve introduced Carnage in the first five minutes to give him enough time to go on a violent R-rated rampage if they wanted. He’s not the most complex character, but the fact he has no qualms with ripping someone in half for fun and that he’s unspeakably hard to kill makes him horrifying and thus fun to watch. Shriek also didn’t need to be there since he originally just stumbled onto her when he was breaking out of prison during the Maximum Carnage story and she just enjoyed the mayhem. Plus, she had chalk white skin and black hair just like Domino does. Fucking diversity shit. Not only that, thanks to Carnage and Cletus being so well bonded, even Kassidy is ridiculously hard to permanently hurt. Sentry ripping him in half in orbit didn’t stop him for long. I think Kassidy has been able to regenerate from very little too. Yeah, it would take probably a second movie to explain why he’s able to do that, but Venom simply biting their heads off was lazy and stupid. I don’t remember the last time anyone was able to fight him one-on-one but it has been a while since I read many comics. It would have been interesting to see him go up against the Avengers if they would have brought Venom into the MCU a while back. Scarlet Witch probably would have been the only one who could stand up to him at all if she didn’t immediately go for the kill. Unfortunately, that wouldn’t have happened since all the bloodshed and gore would have upset the PG-13 audie….err, network execs.

@hanburgundy43173 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't see why these two films get so much hate. I grew up with Venom and Carnage in cartoons, so the whole "it's not rated R!!!!" complaint is pretty baseless, IMO - especially when you consider what Venom and Carnage both do in this movie, i.e. stomping in people's faces, eating a preacher, impaling folks, etc. They just don't show the results of said violence in gratuitous, Tarantino fashion. But, I guess that's what people want, and if they don't get it they complain. Are these two films 10/10 blockbusters? No. But they're pretty good, and I don't think they deserve the negative hype. That said, I do agree that the film was missing something: my input would be to add another half hour to an hour to the movie and really focus on Cletus Cassidy as a serial killer - even once he becomes Carnage. Have Eddy get into understanding the mindset of Cassidy in order to track him down, and really give us more of a crime drama.

For all of its issues, I really enjoyed the first Venom film. The story was basic, yes, but the interaction between Eddie and the symbiote was fun and gave the movie a "buddy cop" vibe that set it apart from the increasingly generic superhero fare dominating the box office. Sadly, the sequel decides to separate them for drama and neither character is interesting enough on their own, which means that the entire second act of the movie is nearly unwatchable. Then the movie suffers from the classic "We have a few good ideas here and there but don't know what to do with them, so we'll just point them out and expect the audience to fill the blanks for us" style that the MCU has perfected (so much that people are still convinced to these day that those movies are clever rather than mere popcorn fun) but that few others can properly get away with. Stuff like the aforementioned backstory for Kasady or the idea that red symbiotes are a familiar sight. The whole thing is exacerbated by the fact that Carnage was never a particularly interesting villain, and failing to improve his character was a major missed opportunity. I can't say I regret having watched the movie, but I probably won't be watching it again.

I rejected the Venom films from their inception once I learned that Spider-Man wasn’t associated. Spider-Man is a pivotal element in the development and creation of Venom on every level. As far as I’m concerned, no Venom exists without that connection. It can’t be shoehorned in two movies after the fact either. Sony does not want my money.

I have one real question. I remember Carnage mostly from either the comics or videogames as the epitomy of savage, evil and chaos, not caring about anything or anyone and who enjoys killing for the fun of it. So first and foremost, I'm having trouble understanding why people seem to want the villain in this case to be compelling by depth... Why? Carnage is not the character that fits that approach and he never was. So why do people expect that CK, and Carnage specifically to have some major form of deep and elaborate take as if you're looking at Thanos? Carnage to me was never the villain you need to care about because he's some damaged chap who happened to end up spit out by life. No, Carnage is that villain you're terrified by because he has no moral compass and does what he does because he likes it. Carnage is pretty much the embodiment of his name: Carnage. And in that light... is Venom 2 worth it?
@TY-km8hj2 жыл бұрын
I think its more ppl wanting to look into the sick twisted relationship between CK and Carnage that we want. No one else would get them but each each and seeing that would've been compelling and also add to the fear factor. I haven't seen anyone wanting the depth of thanos qith a masterplan, just him being a savage and looking into the psychology of it
@pepekovallin2 жыл бұрын
I don't why people don't want 1 dimensional villains anymore, I mean, sure, it's great to have a villain that has a greater goal, or even a good motivation behind extreme approaches, but there's also a good place for villains that are villains because they are just bad, it just feels great to watch a bastard having his ass kicked by the heroes. But no, I think having a villain that is just evil and/or greedy is too much for some people to handle
@pepekovallin2 жыл бұрын
@@FatherNagic some people tried to defend this aspect of the movie because "in the comics is just like this, they say they're going to do lots of things and then it's something not so dirty", but we're still watching a movie, we need to feel impact of everything, but we will never feel impact in a bite on someone's fucking head, if it doesn't come out a single drop of blood. defending venom 2 for being too goofy, or having stupid fight scenes is just excusing lazy writing

They both are so compatible, that Carnage has bonded to Cassidy’s blood, rather than his muscles or flesh, like most other symbiotes, making it far harder to remove Carnage from Cassidy, if not impossible to do so. It’s an integral part of Carnage’s character that Kassidy completes him, and that Kassidy feels the same way. Hence, Carnage always uses I when referring to himself, whereas Venom invariably uses we. His symbiote is just an extension of Cletus Kassidy's mind. So there is no other voice in his head. Just his own. He is supposed to be the poster boy of perfect symbiosis.
