Yes, we bought a Land Rover Discovery 4 to replace our Freelander. Now we own our 2006 LR3 and the 2013 LR4. Is the LR4 really a upgrade compared to the LR3? See our opinion in the video.
Also check out the cool Porsche Tractor collection from the buyer of our Freelander at the end of the video!
Hopefully you enjoy the video.

I just traded my 2006 Discovery 3 for a 2015 Discovery 4 both used as our second car. Having previously owned a Discovery 3 and two Discovery 4s from new, I knew what I was buying. However, I had forgotten the horrendous turbo lag in the D3, as well as the lack of reversing camera and not being able to link my phone to the car to play music except through the Aux input. I also like the fact that I can see when the auto-lights have turned on by an indication in the driver display, rather than having to put my hand up near the rear view mirror and take my eyes away from driving to see if that little light is on. The keyless entry is a boon when you have your hands full, and being able to double-lock the car at a door then open the tailgate, knowing that when you close it, it will re-lock the car and re-arm the security system with no further input is also a big help. However, there are a couple of things I do miss from the D3. The first is personal preference - I prefer the old grille, and don't like the newer 'family face' grille on the D4. I also think it's a shame that LR changed the bumpers and wheel arch extensions from grey hard plastic to body-coloured gloss finish. Getting a scratch on the corner of a bumper or on the wheel arch didn't use to matter. It's also taken away what I believed was an aesthetically pleasing contrast on light coloured cars, like silver or white. All in all, I don't regret trading my D3 for a D4.

@davidhuett3579 2 жыл бұрын
Funny you should say that. I have both a Discovery 2 TD5 (2001) and an SDV6 HSE spec Discovery 4 (2013) and, although I love the D4, I have much greater confidence in the D2. The D4 is a beautiful vehicle to drive and a very capable offroader ... however, I have in the back of my mind .. snapping a crankshaft .. blowing a turbo .. crack in the inlet manifold ... and a myriad of other possible 'expensive' problems. Not very reassuring if you spend most of you time, as I do, in the Australian outback. I service/repair my own vehicles (except for anything major) and even considered buying a Toyota Landcruiser before the D4 at one stage, but turned away from this because they have just as many issues and are also expensive to repair. The LC also has nowhere near the 'driveability' of a Discovery! Another thing I don't like about any of these later vehicles is .. I prefer a live axle to the independent suspension any day of the week.

Personally I think that a Discovery 4 is worth the extra money. But then again it depends on the budget that you have, if you can't afford a discovery 4 but can afford a discovery 3 then I think it's would be worth getting it. It really depends on what you want the car for aswell, if it's purley off roading the a discovery 3 may be a better option but a discovery 4 would be a better option for me, I woud get a HSE Luxury just because I like the features and you have the option of using it for more things, it is also slightly more refined in my opinion but it is a Land Rover so only slightly 😂.

@@Vera_and_Christian Corris is definitely a cool place, it became home to an alternative society in the 60's who built eco homes and it's been the home of 'The Centre for Alternative Technology' since the 70's. The mines in the area are a labyrinth, it's definitely a part of Wales that time forgot. Also very close to ''Machynlleth was the seat of Owain Glyndŵr's Welsh Parliament in 1404,[4] and as such claims to be the "ancient capital of Wales". However, it has never held any official recognition as a capital. It applied for city status in 2000 and 2002, but was unsuccessful. It is twinned with Belleville, Michigan.'' The old tractors were great, you will appreciate the LR4 more as time goes on depending on its reliability. I have found many Discoveries have not been looked after properly and this is a major factor with future failures. Reliability aside the LR4 is the best off this class. Great show.

Looking forward to see what you do to your D4. I brought a 2015 MY D4 last year to replace my 18 year old D2 My buying criteria was I wanted a low mileage (50,000 miles) one owner, full service history ( these are complex vehicles and I think a lot of reliability problems come from a lack of maintenance). I tow with mine so the engine was important (I could buy a new pick up with 3500kg towing capacity for not much more but all the new vehicles seem to only have a 1.9 - 2.0 litre engine) I think that towing the SDV6 will be less stressed. Looking at the values of D3s I don't think I will lose a lot per year in value off the D4 and I think it will hold its value better than the D5 as I don't know anyone who likes the look of the D5. I have spent quite a bit on modifications as mine has to work, these are discrete winch, safety devices roof rack. Pro speed light bar. Rock and tree sliders (wanted side steps and this was easier) tow bar, Loadlugga shelf in the roof, xanadoo boot basket shelf, safari snorkel with cyclone filter. EBC green stuff discs and pads. General grabber AT3 tyres. I've got to say so far it is a brilliant vehicle. If you want any help or advice please ask, although you seem more than capable. Good luck and have fun.

You are correct on facelift and replacement models dropping quality, as a family we have had lots of BMW 5 series, e12 from the 70's was better trimmed than the e28, e28 was miles better built than the e34 , similar story with Mercedes. Too many accountants running car company's. I do like the disco 3 and 4, the 3 here in the UK tends to be very cheap, I think they are both so much nicer than the disco 5, my friend has bought a 5 and it's so small inside. Good initial review and comparison to the D3. I recently had my D3 written off due to a car accident (not my fault) and i was looking at getting a D4 as “an upgrade” i took a HSE for a test drive and it was “better” but i really needed to take it on a long run to see, but the reliability issues i thought should have been corrected from the experiences of the D3 into the D4 don’t appear to have happened which is sad really…but I still can’t get over how much i like the Discovery 3/4 and that is why i appreciate your channel because it prepares me for what i may expect to have happen…and how to fix it!

Gearbox needed a rebuild @ 180,000KM but that was because of that stupid sealed for life box and the stealer saying it didnt need servicing. Regarding the User manuals. The manuals are quite well written, and the German version may have been signed off by JLR's German boss at the time. I agree that the content has dumbed down, I have a manual from my 1989 D1 V8 and it and the 2005 D3 manual contained lots of really useful stuff, but my 2012 D4 manual is mostly devoted to the Infotainment system, which 1: My S spec doesn't have much of, and 2: I don't use it, I use my Parrot Asteroid Mini to stream internet radio. Every Model year gets a new user manual and each year it gets less and less useful. I often have to dig out an earlier year manual to answer user questions as their manual doesn't have the answer, or it's badly laid out.

It's a Land Rover, bings and bongs shouldn't cause any anxiety. It will either turn off on it's own or most likely it is something stupid. In my experience major problems make themselves known with or without lights or noises you almost can't trust anything coming from the computer on the discovery 3, it is "the boy who cried wolf". With the 4 you get a nicer interior, better brakes, more power, improved suspension components with significant reliability downsides and reduced off-road capability. As you mentioned about the angles but also the increased wheel size is a disadvantage(18in wheels fit on the 3 but not the 4) because it reduces tyre options. In North America it was even worse because the 4.4L was pretty much bulletproof where the 5L was a basket case with timing chain issues and other assorted quality issues. At least in North America the 3 is much cheaper to repair than the 4, parts are much cheaper. The 3 with the 4.4 V8 is one of the best off-road vehicles LR has produced in the last 25 years, I suspect at some point they will be very in demand for off road builds. As for "infotainment" and such, just take the Land Rover unit and throw it in the bin in the 3, the Chinese android units are pretty much plug and play. I have the factory bluetooth which works fine plus CarPlay through the Chinese android, the 2 work great together, frankly it works better than the "infotainment" in newer VW's, Mercedes(why don't they have touch screens?!) and LR's(I don't know about pivi-pivi but the intouch units were horrible) and that is sad because it is a dodgy Chinese android unit that was $275. The integrated units frequently reset because they are tied to the canbus where the isolated android head unit is stable as long as there is power.

I had considered buying a Disco 3, but due to increasing amount of cities across Europe implementing Low Emissions Zones, it really doesn't seem a viable option in the longer run. I have switched to searching for a D4 now with a Euro6 emissions rating. As you said trying to find one without crazy milage at a reasonable price is tricky. However I think it will be worth it in the longer run. I'm not sure there are too many other vehicles on the market that are as versatile as the Discovery. Looking forward to the videos on your D4.

Definitely a nicer interior over the 3 . I would have either really . I love all things landrover. I thick the 8speed ZF along with the SD engine is slightly more economic alternative from the 3. Blue tooth capability

The bong in my '08 L322 was also used both for faults and notifications which wasn't good for my blood pressure, especially in the winter. Every time I heard the bong sound warning me of potential black ice I envisaged lots of bank notes leaving my wallet 😆 Luckily I have a '12 L322 now which has a visual indicator on the binnacle instead of a bong.

Hi, must admit have a D3 and fitted a D4 steering wheel to mine, but also know many who have fitted a heated D4 wheel to a D3 , to be honest though I couldn’t a heated steering wheel on mine due to the extra cost , must admit wasn’t too keen on the D4 but over time really like them, if I ever bought one would get the 5 litre V8 petrol but alas many are imported from Japan into the uk 👍

Moin and hi Vera and Christian, don't you expect decreasing values of Diesel vehicles in the upcoming movement on environmental standards? I am afraid, fuel costs will raise even more than during the last weeks. I met a suisse guy at the Abenteuer Allrad a few years ago, who did some trips with his well equipped LR D3. He recommended to buy a D4 instead of the D3, mainly for the improved electronic system. Good luck with your D4. Looking forward to watching the vids on the D4. I appreciate your way of presenting your experience and opinion. Go ahead Heinz

Hello Vera and Cris, congratulations on the acquisition of the D4 and the minimal differences between ub D3 and D4, following them faithful, I really like your comments and learned your repairs, solutions that you could do yourself (depends on the tool at hand). I live in Mexico City and my LAND ROVER is LR3 HSE (here it is named) is 2006 but gasoline, I have personally fixed my LR3 taking many examples of yours as a hobby and my beloved truck, I hope they continue with more updates of D3 and D4. Get yourself a diagnostic tool first, learn how to use it. And hook it up to your Disco during the test drive. You most likely know more about that car than the owner does. And the best advice we give, even so not everyone likes to hear it : You have to be either able to fix it yourself, like we do, or have the money to have it professionally fixed. Otherwise, a Land Rover Discovery is not the right car for anyone. If the car you plan on buying does not have a clean service record, especially every 10000km or 1/year oilchange, do not buy. On the Disco3.co.uk website, you can look for the service interval sheet for a LR4, look at it and see if your desired car has all that done already. And do not trust a check mark, let them show you the actual invoice. You can get the best or the worst. We have the best Discoveries and Fabian got the worst of the Discoveries out there. We love our Land Rovers and we absolutely convinced they are the best cars. But best to do your homework before hand and not afterwards. 👍🙋‍♀️ Vera

@Vera_and_Christian
@Vera_and_Christian 3 жыл бұрын
For us, it does not really matter if they have been taken off road or not. Most important to us, when buying any used Land Rover is, have they been maintained well. It is very important that all oilchanges have been made, engine and differential, regularely. It also depends on the mileage and the price of course 😅. And you have to hook up a obdii tool and see what kind of faults they have. Then your preference of engine matters. Our criteria is, next to the trim, getting the lowest mileage with the least faults. That is why we bought our Disco4, Christian wanted HSE trim, the price and kilometers was unbeatable and we knew we could handle the oil sensor fault. 🙋‍♀️ Vera

we have the 'phone connected via Bluetooth in our Discovery 3 HSE from 2005, and that inturrupts the radio or whatever music you're playing when a call is incoming. The only thing it doesn't do is play music via Bluetooth - you have to plug your device into the auxilliary socket (which is behind the centre console, not ideal if you have inquisitive children).

Great video, I was looking for a LR3 to replace my RR P38, but ended up with a 2006 RR L322, with heated steering wheel, seats front and rear, which was the deal maker for my family. The LR 3 and 4 have more off road accessories than the L322 which has almost none. Over here in Canada the Discovery name is reserved for some LR 2 and their newer vehicle that looks a bit like the Mercedes GL with the bloated rear. I liked the LR4 but they were outside of my budget and over here they have the petrol engines. The one thing I really dislike is the electronic parking brake on the LR 3 and 4. As bad of an idea as the electronic dipstick.

Hello, Great video. I have a question for you. Maybe you can help me. My phone use to connect to my LR4. It stopped working. No matter what I try, the blue tooth no longer pairs up with my phone. I think that I may need to replace the Bluetooth. Do you know how to change the Bluetooth in the LR4? Or do you have any other suggestions as to why my Bluetooth is no longer working. Thank you for your time.
@Vera_and_Christian
@Vera_and_Christian 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure how to replace the Bluetooth…. But try to do a reset by deleting all phones. If this does not help disconnect the negative battery Pole. Try an other phone too. Try both connection directions to see if both systems are visible. After reconnecting the bat, you need to reestablish a few things like window single push, roof window, clock, etc. Christian

Congrats guys for the "new entry"... D4 is more capable offroad due to faster communication system inside Terrain Response stuff and better low end torque...Tip: monitor closely the injectors balancing, it seems to be the root cause of crankshaft failures! A good injector diesel cleaner every 4/5 tank refills is recommended. Enjoy the new toy and use Arbre Magique :-)))
