Another great video. I have written a similar rant when I 'upgraded' to a D4 from a D3. A few points. I have had a D3 auto for 8 years and a D4 8 speed for 4 years. Both now are around 300,000km. The D3 has had a rebuilt gearbox and torque convertor, and the D4 has had a rebuilt engine due to crankshaft failure. Crankshaft failure is more prevalent in the 3.0 version. You mention that the EGR are more complex in the 3.0 litre. Maybe, and they are certainly a different design, but 3.0 EGR do not cause problems like the 2.7 EGR do. I agree that the are paddles are pretty useless off road. But you are not making a fair comparison as your D3 is manual transmission. Other than for engine braking, the paddles are not needed. I just had a whole weekend off road in Spain and it was in D 99% of the time. The HP8 transmission is superior to the HP6 in every way. Also, they just don't break. The D4 is 10% more fuel efficient, like for like. My D3 has given 11.36 l/100km over 218,932km. My D4 has given 10.39l/100km over 186,307km. This was a major consideration when I retired my D3 from work and replaced it with a D4, that, and I no longer trusted the gearbox. 110,000km later, the crankshaft snapped, but hey, I'm not looking at my feet, the D3 towed the dead D4 from central Brittany, France to Kent, UK for a rebuild. The D3 does look better, inside and out. The D3 front seats are better, so much so I swapped my D3 driver seat in to my D4. That fabric SE spec seat has now had my fat arse on it for nearly 600,000km, and it's still not torn anywhere and still the best chair I own. The grab handles on the head rest are a must too, if you camp in the back like I do. I tend to drive my cars for maybe 12 hours a day and the quietness is a bonus. I still look back at both cars when I park them, and I love them both. I prefer the look of the D3, but I prefer the drive of the D4.

Thank you Christian and Vera. One of your best videos! Much of which I agree with you. I have a 2005 (2.7 litre) Discovery 3 S and a 2010 (3 litre) Range-rover Sport SE. Both are automatic and both have the 6 speed lever operated box. We are having a few problems getting fuel in the UK right now and we have just returned from a 500 mile round trip. Because the Discovery 3 had more fuel in it at the beginning of the trip, we were forced to use this vehicle for our trip, which it did to perfection! Its Launch is very good and it will drive very happily all day at 2 0 more miles/hour than it should be. Remember that our Range-rover has the 6 speed box, so launches well. But according to the computer its fuel economy is about 3 miles/gallon better than the Disco. However it is much more of a bumpy ride and because the engine noise is reduced, does promote more “Oh my God” comments due to the increase of rattling sounds from inside the vehicle. Despite the horror stories we hear, together with the guilt your videos cause because we don’t maintain our vehicles as well as you do, our 16 year old Discovery 3 is and has been an incredibly reliable vehicle. What other 16 year old vehicles would you be happy to use on a 500 mile round trip, without having to worry about it? As regards Toyota - v - LR, there is only one brand of vehicle, no matter how old it is, that will go anywhere in this world, including Buckingham Palace WITH PRIDE. And it isn’t the Toyota!

I've been saying the same thing about reliability for a while now. If the 2.7 doesn't snap a crank or spin a bearing (which you have a pretty low chance of doing) it's actually a really reliable engine - 330k on my MY08 and barely anything has gone wrong with the engine apart from usual things like water pump and the plastic crossover pipe on top of the engine. Hotter climates (Australia in my case) see that piece fail more often. I've also installed the upgraded oil pump as you have. There are other factors that cause failure in the 2.7 - the timing belt tensioner bolt is only torqued to 24nm but I've seen the results of mechanics actually using a rattle gun to do them up - snapped bolt 500km later. Also the oil filter comes out with the housing cap, but if you install it back the same way you will destroy the engine as you are not locating the bypass in the filter housing as required. I specifically bought the 2.7 as in Australia we have the Ford Territory SUV that uses the Land Rover single turbo version of the 2.7 Lion diesel. Can buy a wrecked one with low KM for a pittance. That was my hedge.

Brilliant, and I agree so much. Simple is better in the long run. Don’t forget also it is almost guaranteed the 3.0 will crack the intake manifolds which never occurs on the 2.7. An expensive repair. Point 6 you missed is the stock wheels are 18”. For off road and sand driving this is much better with better tyre choice. 19” inch is a backwards step for the D4 and now here in Australia owners buy aftermarket 18” solutions. Crazy. In city driving the brakes of the D3 are perfectly ok. Point 7 - the lower spec SE of the the D3 is perfect simple and stylish without the bling extras of D4 which is like a RRS. The centre console design is more practical in the simple version. Point 8 - unpainted black wheel arches, look better and are more appropriate for off road. Point 9 - the 2.7 has an oil dipstick
@Vera_and_Christian3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I agree. I forgot about the 19“ rims. They make the tires to hard even for on road driving. The no-dipstick issue was serious for us as shown a view videos back. You scare me about the intake manifolds. My D4 leaks oil in the area of the Upper Right Hand cylinder where the tandem pump is mounted. So this could be the valve cover 😳😳😩😩? Body color Painted arches suck. I got them. Mall crawler look. Advantage is, they can be coated easily. Thanks. Christian

...... If you look back in time to when Land Rover had just the mighty Defender and the "luxury" Classic Ranger Rover. The users of these vehicles were the Farmer (and emergency services inc. military) and the off road enthusiast utilizing the Defender. The Range Rover was the vehicle of the Rich and Famous. The good old Farmer wanted something more luxurious than the Defender but could not afford the Range Rover. so, in time Land Rover came up with the Discovery and it was nearly packaged to fit right in the middle between the Defender and the Range Rover; this is what made the early Discovery's D1 and D2 a huge success. Then Land Rover came up with the D3, a natural progression to rhe aging D2, but this it as at neatly in the middle of the line up of Defender, Discovery and Range Rover. When Land Rover introduced the D4, I feel they commenced a significant shift to one side of the line up. No longer did the Discovery sit in the middle, it now took some of the territory held traditionally by the Range Rover. Of course the D5 has done this even more and in my view the D5 is not worth a light especially in an off road environment. I know, I tested one in Africa a few times and it could not go any of the places my D3 would go. (I will come back to the D5 later). Nqw, with D4 sat as it did, it took up sales traditionally held by Range Rover leaving a vacume in sales of those wanting a slightly more luxury vehicle than the Defender. Of course Land Rover have tried to rectify this void with the introduction of the New Defender (a huge mistake in n my opinion). Christian is right in so many ways about the D3 being a better vehicle than the D4. The D4 is softer in suspension etc. Just take time to check out the gallery pressures on the air suspension between the D3 and D4. The seats are not as robust on the D4. I've driven both the D3 and D4 off road in some pretty hectic conditions in Africa and in my experience, the D3 performed much better. Yes, the D4 has terrain response 2 which activates a little quicker than that in the D3, but that is not always a good thing. Yes the rear diff (electronic) on the D4 is a little bigger and stronger than that on the D3. The crank issues on the Diesel are still much the same as they have always been. Interesting that Land Rover never sold the D3 or D4 diesel in the North American market, I think this is because Land Rover knew about the crank issues and foresaw that in North America, that Ford Engine, would result in class legal actions. Many people are now getting some serious mileage out of the diesel D3's. Historically, the manufacturer of the D3 and D4's gearbox - ZF have pretty much only had trouble with their gearboxes fitted to the diesel variants of the D3 and D4. The V8 engines in the D3 and D4 have a different programming in the gearboxes. This I have heard directly from ZF. The D4 did ease some of the gremlins in the D3, but with a little bit of work and time, those gremlins in the D3 can be fixed and eradicated. I'm with Christian, the D3 is a better vehicle than the D4. Returning to the D5 topic. The. D5 does have some trick things about it. But it is let down in an off road battle ground by its wheel sizes. To drop down to 18" wheels, you need to replace the brakes fitting brakes and calipers from a D3 V8. You cannot put a winch on the front of a D5 either, not less you want to risk bending the chassis. It can only go on the rear, a lot of help that is!!!! I have travelled over 60,000km off road in Africa in our D3 V8 (weighing in at over 4,000kgs) and towing a 1,500kg trailer. My D3 was generally faultless. I got 6km/l in the Central Khalahari in the wet season with mud everywhere. In deep sand, I got 3km/l as does pretty much everyone diesel and petrol alike. Would I go for a D4 over a D3, the simple answer is no.

Hello Ivan, I appreciate your feedback. You have so much more real world experience that I. I get my information by working on the cars and internet research. You got it from actual driving. The long term model lineup of Landrover is great I think. Yes, the new Defender is really an other new Discovery. Old Defender owners may have a opportunity in the new Ineos. Hope to talk to you again. Christian

Have had my D3 since new (build 2009), no signficant mechanical showstoppers thus far, still going very nicely with 309km on the clock! Changing out the electronic handbrake module in a few weeks, will cost about A$1,700 for the part, and ~$700 for the labour. Happy to hear any alternative thoughts on that scenario. I was the owner of an Audi 2.0 TSI B8 230 HP Allroad, and there was also a problem with the launch. I suppose it's an issue with the transmission and software, and that's it. Of course, in an Audi, there’s a procedure for a proper launch using the gas pedal and brake simultaneously, but I didn't have the chance to check it because someone stole it :D

Paddles good for down shifting when towing down hill to maintain slower speed. Also when entering a corner the autobox does not know you are about to accelerate after the corner. So let the car settle as you approach then use the paddle to select 1 gear lower just before the corner. This reduces the lag as you accelerate out of the bend. (Info from a UK police advanced driver who has used 3 and 4)

I think its because people are surprised its still running. It’s retro cool. its my 5th Discovery 2 and i love it because I can repair it, the Td5 even though under powered by todays standard sounds great.. We bought a Disco 4 2012 3 months ago. Dealer told us it was a 3L 8 speed. Turns out is is a 2.7L 6 speed. Seems we hit the sweet spot in the Discoveries though. This is our second Disco the previous one was a 4L petrol 3. They are both automatics and both have a long think about it before they “launch”. Prefer the looks of the Disco 4 though. Fuel consumption is way better. Petrol was using on average 15.2L/100Km. Diesel is using on average 9.7L/100Km. Most of our driving is done on forestry “roads” and country roads in a hilly area.

There is a 3.0 diesel with 211 HP and a 245 HP. Both have the HP6. Only the SDV6 3.0 with 258 HP starting in 2013 (I think) has the HP8. The 245 and 258 HP engines are identical. The HP come from a change in the computer. All as far as I know... Christian

I'd like to add a 6th point. Seat comfort. We owned an LR3 some years back, and were given an LR4 with the SCV6 engine, as a loaner when it was in for service. It was not nearly as comfortable as our LR3. Not to mention the buzy nature of the SCV6 compared to the V8. It was a far less comfortable car IMO. Granted we had it on loan for only a week, but I wasn't impressed enough to like the LR4 over the LR3.

I must be one of the 2 ex toyota owners here. Had a J120 2009 Land cruiser Prado 3.0 Diesel. I loved that thing, but it got the point where it was breaking down so often that I lost my patience with it. To list some of the issues . Transfer case leak. Manageable, meaning every couple of months I had to check the level and re fill from time to time small quantities, about 100 g. Front brakes were changed 2-3 times, discs, calipers, sway bar bushings, etc.. it would still fail the technical inspection, nobody knew the cause. Somehow they did some other tests, I broke them in, I passed by the smallest margin, even after 2 years when I sold the car they were not right, the car would tend to veer towards right when I was hard on the brake on slippery conditions. AC compressor - dead - replaced with new. - normal maintenance done on it.. ( renewing the compressor oil every 2 years.. ) Electrical gremlin in the back - would burn the tail lights fuse non stop . This would happen on - off. Finally diagnosed - there was a water leak in the license plate lamp, water would accumulate there and causing shorts. That was due to a poor design and bad quality rubber insulation. Total EGR failure , of course during a holiday. No spare parts in 3 countries, wait time was 2 weeks . Had to drive 2000 km back home with about 100 HP. I would be flooring it and barely reach 100 km/h. Apparently it also has some kind of electrical thing - sensor and you can't just clean it, you need to replace it.. 1600 euro. The last drop that made me sell it was a massive oil leak . Did not even bother to check, it was not for sure the valve cover.. I just took it to a dealer and dropped it off to sell it, accepted the first offer. This by no means is a complete list, only a few of the bigger issues.. I exchange that for a new Hilux, the 2.4 engine, the only one sold at the time. Unfortunately the drive test was done with it empty, not loaded for camping. Terrible engine, the moment you had 200 kg of something in the back, it was done. It had tiny adblue reservoir that was suppose to last 12-15k km and was empty in 5 k. The dealership said it was normal, in the manual the normal distance was listed as 12-15k km but still they would say it was normal. Fuel economy -worse than the old 3L that had more HP and torque, about 2.5 L more/100 km. Somehow at higher outside temperatures like 35 degrees or more, I would say 1/3 of the little engine power it had was gone as well. The dealership ( 2 of them actually were not able to reproduce it , how could they in Luxembourg and Trier.. or could not find anything wrong ) . Sold it 2 months ago, after I came back from a trip in Albania where I had enough.. ( it was hot most of the time....) I refuse to believe that in 2020 you can sell a vehicle where you need to turn the AC off to get a bit more extra to climb a hill..... There was definitely something wrong with it, but the warrantee and dealers just useless.. So I go do a test with the new LC Prado 150 , the 2.8 engine sold i Europe. It was feeling like it was tuned at Nürburgring, because this is what you want from a 4x4, cornering performance. There is a class action suit in Australia regarding the 2.8 diesel in it.. So a hard pass and started looking at Land rovers... So ok, you have to repair them, but least you are comfortable...
