As an LR4 owner you get to hear lots of stuff knocking them for reliability things like “Land Rover a company that has been turning owners into mechanics since 1948. But I really Like the phrase best said in a Strong South African accent “If you want to go into the bush take a Land Rover”. “But if you want to come back take a Toyota”. But I still love my Disco. Cheers for your great interesting LR content and showing us how good and very dry Gmb humour is. Cheers from the UK.

My Discovery 3 only starts after two turns while cold. As a possible solution, I got the glow plugs replaced but the problem persisted. I wanted to change my high pressure fuel pump as the next solution but my Land Rover specialist mechanic gently persuaded me to wait until my Discovery no longer starts. From watching your video, I think I know why he is hesitant to replace my fuel pump. It's clearly open heart surgery with Surgeon Christian in the operating theatre and Vera, the ever reliable trustworthy nurse :-)

Thoroughly enjoying your wrenching, even though I’m a Citroen (Xm, Saxo) and Toyota (Prius) owner! I think everyone who loves engineering will enjoy this, with all the witty lines containing so much pretty universal information! Big thumbs up! If I had only the time and space to work on our Cits… never came past the point of replacing a timing belt together with a mechanic. Luckily we do have a specialist nearby who works on them in his free time, they’re not dealer maintained!

I am astonished at the layers of complexity here, just as much as your ability to disassemble everything, and more importantly, to reassemble it all without forgetting anything. I think I saw a trusty Haynes manual on your bench, but you seem to know every detail of this engine off by heart without using it.

I can sure make it look like that I know what I am doing. All I need to do is to film an empty screw box... And make sure that Vera thinks that all screws are installed... But of course, nothing was left over. I do prefer the LR shop manual before the Hayes for such complex repairs. The Hayes is good too but the illustrations in the LR manual are better and more detailed. Christian

Dear Vera & Christian, you create very interesting and helpful videos! I'm watching your videos for about 1 year. That time I was looking for the information about LR 3 & 4. The possibility to repair the vehicle as DIY increased my interest to that car, as I like to spend some time with it. I did few test drives on LR 3 & 4. I like the interior, many practicable features, tailgate (not very practicable, but cool :). It is easy to fall in love with this car. I was almost decided to buy one. But my research about the reliability continued. Not only youtube, but other sources show the really huge issues with reliability. On the second hand market so many cars are already with new engine, or with broken one. I would not be able to spend so much time repairing the car and most important - this car does not satisfy basic characteristic as off-road vehicle - reliability. So I decided to use another car manufacturer. Your video helped me to make my choice. I wish you to have enough energy for the future videos! Thanks!

Nice, thank you for the video! I changed mine a while ago, it was also refurbished, but it came with a printout of test protocol, which should ensure that the PCV and VCV work as they should, even if they are not renewed. Interesting, I didn’t remove the EGR stuff, nor battery, nor cable tree. However, I did have to remove the glow plug thingie nevertheless, which might have been much more fiddle in my case. It is noteworthy that you were lucky that you encountered the more modern type of HPFP, which sits on some kind of holder. Therefore it is smaller and - as we see in the video - very easy to get out. Also, the front side of the HPFP belt case seems to be detachable. In my case, the HPFP has its own “legs” that it is standing on and bolted on with, which makes it so big and clunky that removing it was a job similar to removing the oil separator case, only with 10-fold weight. :) The real difficulty however was that the front half to the pump belt cover is NOT removable in my case, in fact the pulley sticks through it and I had to bend the cover backwards like crazy. I guess I was close to breaking it. …so clearly, in later versions (than my 2006) I think that LR modified the pump and the belt cover to make replacement easier. By the way, I also had to file my pulley a bit. :-) And as a funny fact, I put the old belt (and tensioner) back in because the new one didn’t arrive in time before vacation (a.k.a. big test drive). Alas, changing the belt is relatively easy once your hands have spent hours in that corner… :))
@Vera_and_Christian
@Vera_and_Christian 3 жыл бұрын
We have a 2006 too, and I really hope that we don't have to change the HPFP. 😅 We changed the belt on Fabians car too, putting in a belt from Bosch that came with a defect 🙄. Getting the pump out on Fabians Disco was also a tough one. Remember we edit all of our videos and only put in the most important steps, or in our case funny situations. At least what we think is valuable for the getting the job done. We cannot put hours of trying in video, we try not to waste anyyones time. We will do a major overhaul on our Disco 3 engine, even considering taking the engine out for that job, during Christians winter vacation time after Christmas. 👍🙋‍♀️ Vera

Well this has certainly helped my anxiety, having recently bought a D3 (very cheap I might add) knowing it needed work. I drove it home approximately 30 miles. The next day it didn't start. Fault finding found LPFP faulty. Changed that and the filter and now seemingly the HPFP is faulty also..... I am purchasing on when my health improves, (I am suffering with long covid, after having caught covid 4 times and almost dying 6 times from it) which should be in around 8 months time. I have purchased the Haynes manual which arrives tomorrow and will start putting some tools together. I intend to learn as much about the Disco 3 as possible and well aware that the real learning will come as I physically take on the repair tasks (getting the feel of it). I am still undecided whether or not to get the diesel or Petrol 4.4L V8 version. My partner also wants me to purchase a Disco 3. Thanks for sharing. Tony & Laura

I fell in love what what I have seen with this car up to the point of actually test driving a Disco 4. Unfortunately, after watching these videos, I just can’t see myself getting a car that will likely need repairs having to do this left of work to do repairs on this level. With the alternative being big money. It’s a shape too because I found a Disco 4 that was really nice, throwing no codes but air conditioner not blowing cold air.

On my Disco I bought an electronic unit that fires up the engine heater and it warms the engine in the winter before starting. It works off the Headlight main beam. So programme the key fob to work the main beam, click the headlight on for 2 seconds and then click them off again and you will hear the engine heater fire up. 5 minutes later the engine will start and you have warm air immediately in the cabin. Much easier than replacing and breaking the glow plugs.

In the 90* configuration the moment arm is the hypotenuse of the torque wrench and the crowfoot, rather than the total length of the wrench and crowfoot in the extended configuration. Long story, it is over torqued, though just by a small amount.

I was keeping an eye out for a petrol V6 LR4 (to upgrade from my LR2) but looking at all the repairs required, I'm really rethinking my choice and considering a 4Runner. I'm not lucky like Fabian to have a Christian around here in Canada ;o) Thanks and Cheers!

Petrol ones are pretty good. Only 2010-2012 v8 had a timing chain tensioners problem, but v6 from 2013 are quite good. though they also have direct injection, but the fuel pump is much cheaper

Hi Christian and Vera. I had a Land Cruiser FJ80 which was a fantastic car but the parts prices are even more "How Much!!!!!!!" than Land Rover. Of course it didn't break down either but where's the fun in that and you'd only get bored with nothing to fix!

How long did it take for you to start after replacing it? In the video, it says that 3 to 4 bleed cycles are needed, but what does 1 bleed cycle mean? Can you give me any tips or advice?

I am sure you have thought about this away from the stress, but you were correct with the crow foot at 90 degrees to the shaft of the torque wrench. That will give you as close to the correct torque that is possible.

I am not quiet sure which one you mean. Fabian has, we do also now, the GAP diagnostic tool, used with your cellphone. We got ours used, since it is a really expensive device. Here is the link www.gap-diagnostic.com/products/iidtool/ What we also have is an icarsoft obdii diagnostic tool. You have to lock at their website what tool suits you best (they changed their models and ours is not available anymore). Make sure it is only for Land Rover /Jaguar cars, and not a generic one. Then order it on Amazon or directly from their online shop, depending on where you are from www.icarsoft.com/Product/s-332-icarsoft_multi_system_scanner_i930_for_landroverjaguar.html 🙋‍♀️Vera

Finally did this on my 07 this week. Did not remove battery or wiring loom from behind the battery, but the rest was similar to your video. Also bought a crow-foot kit, the oil separator stud needs a 13mm. BUT; did you ever measure the LPFP-pressure at the schrader-valve? I’m still struggling with limp with new hpfp and have only 3psi at the schrader, even with a new lpfp.
