YES! It is WAY past time to scrap this three-article Treaty. There is nothing "sacred" about it. It's not a "covenant". There's NOTHING in it about partnership -- Article 1 says in so many words that Mauri cede sovereignty without reservation to Queen Victoria. And as for tikanga, I personally do NOT want to return to a country composed of multiple warring tribes, who routinely killed, enslaved and then ate the neighbors. THAT IS how this country operated in the early 19th century -- and had done since Maori got here.

Jay Ruka is the author of Huia Come Home Book.Iit contains Critical Race Theory ideas applied to New Zealand circumstances in a want-to-be prophetic Christian habit. The author after a short survey of church history in NZ leads readers through a kind of "deconstruction" process to accept his idea that there is nothing like a Christian worldview and then to the next step which is to embrace Maori worldview with Maori gods, mauri (something like a soul) and wairua (spirit). He does not distinguish between the Holy Spirit and other spirits, does not seem to fully understand the difference between the Old Testament (covenant) and New Testament (covenant), mixes together the culture and worldview, interprets scripture in accordance with his pre-conceptions and sees the future of the church under the leadership of Maori worldview. His main idea, the comparison of the fat big chicken representing the Western culture and lovely but extinct Huia is a typical metaphor of Critical Race Theory dichotomy oppressor versus oppressed while he ignores not only the real historical facts (the real state of pre-contact society in this country, the difference between 15th-16th century colonisation and the process of colonisation in NZ including the Treaty of Waitangi which under his pen takes a token of a sacred document) but, again in accordance with CRT practices, blames the church of betrayal of Maori in the years of wars (while the opposite is nearer the truth) and sees the way of her redemption in embracing Maori worldview. As for the extinction of Huia lamented through the whole book, he again ignores at least 30 bird species and other forms of life that became extinct during the Maori so called "stewardship". Denigrating everything that has anything to do with the Western culture as the author does in this book opens the question: which system in the world history was and is better than Western democracy built on classical antiquity together with Judaism and Christianity? Take out the Redemption brought about by Lord Jesus Christ, substitute it with Maori animistic pagan religion and the whole will collapse.

@matthewdonoghue3212 ай бұрын
Lets be clear about this... even if the Treaty was and is a sacred document (that's a big IF)... the bill before parliament is designed to return the treaty to its original meaning as it was understood for the first 140 years of it's existence and to end the activist reinterpretations. As a guy who has spent quite a bit of time in Christian churches... why have all these so called Christians signed a document to perpetuate racial inequality in our country? And why are these leaders speaking on a non religious matter? And why are they doing so before reading the bill?
@davethewave72482 ай бұрын
Though the Church Missionary Society had much to do with putting the treaty together [in its humanitarian/ idealistic aspect], it is very much a secular document, a political compact made between the British state and Maori tribes, and should not be considered a covenant, or sacred [a covenant is between God and man].

Oh hell - now we are wrapping the Treaty in religious nonsense; that somehow the Treaty is "sacred" - the Treaty doesn't come from the Christian Bible - it has no relationship to the Christian Faith AT ALL. It is a man-made instrument of diplomatic action between one state, as defined and recognised under the 1648 Treaties of Wesphalia, and groups of early settlers. The early settlers wanted protection and aid and assistance from the former, and they were given it. PLEASE, 400 useful idiots for the Maori activists to leverage and take advantage of, including my own Parish priest, all because they want to be goody goodies. And for a Right Reverand - not a priest, and without the God-given authority of a priest - he freely and proudly admits that he is employed as a Maori Treaty indoctrinator for the Anglican Church that has already rejected key parts of scripture to "accommodate" Maori gods and mythology (when the Bible states, there is only one God, and all others are idols worshipped by idolators).

Yes - of course you were "doing a bit of treaty education" (Ideology spreading), and the offer of work just "cropped up"... par for the course I'd say... Incidentally, since we are going to throw stones - what did the Waikato Tribes do to the Taranaki people? In the early 19th century, the Taranaki people suffered significant losses during raids by Waikato tribes as part of the broader Musket Wars. Armed with muskets, the Waikato forces attacked Taranaki in the 1820s, resulting in the deaths and capture of several thousand Taranaki individuals. Many were taken as slaves, while others were displaced from their land, leaving parts of the region depopulated and weakened. These invasions had a lasting impact, with large numbers of Taranaki people either killed, enslaved, or integrated into Waikato society - mostly the women for obvious reasons... So, if you were a Taranaki chief (people) and wanted the protection of the "Great Queen" - you would sue for her protection by becoming a subject, by signing the Treaty of Waitangi? Of course you would - and not as a "partner"... Some would claim that this guy is an ideological schill.

These standard churches hold far less than 1% of the NZ population. So a minority voice. The Maori branches of churches maybe 4 to 5% of their population. The churches had a major input into the original Treaty, and so they have a standpoint,

Is any member of the media going to be brave enough to ask the Mosques what they have to say about the T.P.B?

1. What is it with these open letters from particular groups? Who cares what these people think. 2. How did we get 400 ‘Church Leaders’? What consigns them to being a leader? Are they voted in?

The Maoris would have spread a scripted letter for them to send, as if the Church speaks and understands Te Reo, it's a crock. No one Church speaks for Christians in NZ, most don't go to Church its gone awol but God is still in charge not Maoris

This is painful to listen to, how can someone agree but disagree in the same sentence as much as this guy. Allow the conversation if you have nothing to hide, by opposing the debate you make yourself seem guilty. The definition of the treaty can’t keep changing every other year if you think it isn’t/hasn’t then allow the debate and clarify the principle. It’s not hard, do you also question why you should brush your teeth every day?? It’s called common sense, more people need it!

Beware of wolves in sheep's clothing. Many false prophets will arise in the last days. Church and state should be separate

I think it is illegal for a charity ( churches are a charity) to get involved in Politics. John tamahere and the Waipera Trust is finding out about that now. As for calling the TOW " sacred" as a Very Reverend is laughable 😇🤣🤣

Time for the church’s to be taxed, they should stay out of politics, by the way they are no principles in the treaty, this man is making a history that’s suits him, he’s looking for his pot of gold from the government

Once again we are having the meaning of Maori words stretched out and exaggerated. These terms and ideas would have been way beyond the comprehension of both the Maori people and the majority of the Europeans at the time this Treaty was written. We need to leave it behind and live in this present age as a mature group of people.
