@@katc2040 Obviously If it’s a couch in your house a simple clean with tools like this is fine. But she is picking this up off of the streets of NYC !!! She has no idea where this came from and couches can hold onto so many different germs, fluids, and don’t even get me started on bugs. She barely scraped the surface. Bed bugs and types of almost invisible mites will hide deep in crevices of furniture and fabric and you will have no idea they are there. I assume NYC has rat mites and they can stay alive for awhile without a host, are tinier than a grain of sand, and will drive you insane once an infestation starts. If you have any interest or happen to be bored you should look up some couch/rug/upholstery cleaners on youtube. You can see that sometimes a couch will look completely clean but still is holding onto so much dirt and grime. I personally think it’s interesting but that’s just me :)

As someone who lives in an affluent neighborhood in a cheap apartment, you’d be surprised how much good shit people throw out because they don’t want to go through the hassle of selling it. We actually got a large pottery barn couch for free when a neighbor put it out because the couch cover was dirty but the couch itself was pristine. Like definitely understand the concern about getting a couch from the sidewalk (and I wouldn’t want to do it again) but at the time we definitely couldn’t buy even a cheap couch and only had one armchair in our apartment XD

PSA if you see furniture on the side of the road or wherever: hard furniture is NOT necessarily safer than soft furniture. Both can contain bugs (e.g bed bugs, wood louse) that can then spread to the other furniture in your house. And even if hard furniture may appear clean it is still very important to thoroughly wash before putting it in your home. Stay safe :)

Agreed. Like they're a commodity to be shared "democratically" somehow rather than a multidimensional person with limited time and resources. Also I shudder to think what this will do to people's feelings of entitlement when it comes to their favorite "influencers." How fast will this slide into people feeling (even more so than they often already do) that they have the "right" to "access" the celebrities/creators they like? Oof

i definitely think the public outcry was totally overblown and some of it is based in privilege. that being said i think concerns about stuff like pests and mold/mildew are important to consider. that's a risk some people are willing to take and i don't think that choice should be looked down upon, but people should still be informed about it. i wonder if some of the outcry comes from the fact that she seems to be relatively privileged herself. i don't think this situation would have blown up if it was some poor person finding a regular couch, cleaning it up, and adding it to their living room. the whole situation seems so frivolous. she already has a perfectly good couch that she bought brand new less than 6 months ago. she's living in a 1 bedroom apartment in NYC which costs a small fortune nowadays; it does not seem like this was done out of necessity. i don't think there's anything morally wrong about what she did and frankly i don't know why people care so much. i just think she should have gotten it professionally deep cleaned because the way she cleaned it herself likely damaged the couch according to some professionals

I mean I do agree on people getting up in arms over the most trivial things on the internet. Kurtis is exaggerating here, and that is an aspect of his humour whether we like it or not. Most of his gripes about it, and this is mine as well, is that fabric items can be conduits for diseases. It's also prime real estate for pests. Bed bugs, fleas, and maybe even mold (depending on if there are pockets of moisture left deep in that couch) are all vectors/causes of diseases. Indigenous communities have been wiped out bc of blankets that introduced smallpox so it's not out of community health concerns about picking up fabric furniture without professionals doing a thorough cleaning of it. Who even knows how dirty that couch really is and how thoroughly they cleaned it. We can only take the girl's word for it, and we can just leave it at that. I guess it would've gone better if there wasn't any doubt that she did get it thoroughly cleaned, or if people are aware that there is nothing wrong with picking up furniture off the side of the road, but just be aware of the unintended consequences.

I agree that it would usually be a privileged take, but since it's in NYC (any other very busy city would be the same) I think it's OK to be concerned. I live in a mid-sized town and people take each other's old furniture that they would have dumped all the time, but if I lived in a major city I wouldn't even think to take in something that had been outside for multiple days. I do think people are being overly dramatic in this case though

i made that worm podcast: [Intro music fades in] Host 1: Welcome, earthworm enthusiasts and mud lovers, to another exciting episode of "Wriggling Through the Earth!" I'm your host, Slimy Sammy. Host 2: And I'm Muddy Max! We're here to bring you the most thrilling discussion about mud that you've ever heard. Today's topic? Ranking different types of mud! Sammy: That's right, Max! Get ready to dive deep into the mucky world of mud and discover which types are the crème de la crème. Max: Now, before we begin, let's set some ground rules. We'll be evaluating mud based on texture, viscosity, aroma, and of course, worm-friendliness. Sammy: Absolutely, Max! Our worm audience deserves nothing but the finest mud. So, let's kick things off with the first category: Silt versus Clay. Max: Silt, often silky smooth and fine-grained, is perfect for a relaxing worm spa day. However, clay, with its sticky nature, can be a challenge for worms to maneuver through. It's a tough call, but I think silt takes the win for its welcoming texture. Sammy: I agree, Max. Silt is like a warm, cozy blanket for worms. Moving on to our next category: Peat or Loam. Both are known for their fertility, but which one reigns supreme? Max: Ah, peat, the decomposed organic matter that forms in wetlands. It's nutrient-rich and excellent for worm castings. On the other hand, loam combines sand, silt, and clay, creating a harmonious blend that worms adore. This one is a tie for me, Sammy. Sammy: I have to disagree, Max. Loam takes the crown for me. It's versatile and provides the perfect balance of moisture and aeration. Sorry, peat enthusiasts! Max: Fair enough, Sammy. Now, let's delve into the wild world of boggy bogs. We have marshes, swamps, and fens. Which one is the ultimate worm playground? Sammy: Marshes are often filled with shallow water and grassy vegetation. Swamps are more forested and waterlogged. Fens, on the other hand, are characterized by their high water table and abundant mosses. I'd say fens win this round. They offer a unique combination of moist soil and lush vegetation that worms just can't resist. Max: I'm torn between marshes and fens, but I'll have to agree with you, Sammy. Fens take the lead in this category! Sammy: Great minds think alike, Max. Now, it's time for our final category: Mud Puddles. We're talking about those enticing patches of mud after a rainstorm. Max: Ah, the joy of mud puddles! The texture, the moisture, the pure delight they bring. But there's one crucial factor: the splatterability. After careful consideration, I must crown the slightly viscous, splatter-prone mud puddles as the ultimate winner. Sammy: I'm right there with you, Max. There's something truly magical about a mud puddle that sprays joy with each jump. Splatterability is definitely a game-changer. Max: And that concludes our rankings of different types of mud! We hope you enjoyed this slimy and muddy adventure with us, dear listeners. Sammy: Join us next time on "Wriggling Through the Earth" for more worm-filled adventures, where we'll explore the mysteries of composting and reveal the secrets of vermiculture! [Outro music fades out]

Her couch is going to stink in a week or so. You have to use proper products and thoroughly use the small wand on it. You can see when youre done cleaning by watching the water come through a clear wand which they didnt do lol.

Maybe I'm just poor but my family and many friends have had second hand furniture all my life. My stepdad helps clean out the homes where people have left their furniture behind for whatever reason (usually just because it's old) and we regularly scrub through piles of it for cool stuff. Yeah, some have some stains or whetever but we clean it before we bring it into our house and it's fine. Not everything at goodwill is reupholstered. Damn, not Kurtis being classist on the pod... Don't come for me please
@LeBatteur

It’s not classist to be suspicious of a fabric couch that’s been left outside in a major metropolitan area. Bedbugs are a thing, and they’ll cost way more to get rid of than buying a couch that hasn’t been left outdoors for who knows how long. Just because she was lucky this time doesn’t mitigate that risk. Mold is also a thing, and can have serious health affects over time. The fact that the couch was sitting outside in the rain, and then sat uncleaned in a garage for several weeks after getting soaked really elevates the possibility for mold to set in. I’m not judging people in poverty for doing what they have to do in order to have the things they deserve to have, like comfortable furniture. But it’s not classist to say that upholstered furniture left outside can be hazardous to bring into your home, whether you wash it or not. Also the person in that TikTok seemed pretty well off- I know you can’t exactly tell someone’s financial situation by a few short clips, but having an apartment in New York (or any major city area, really) is really expensive. They already had a couch, meaning they weren’t deprived of furniture to begin with. And this is just my opinion, but the way they act leaves me with the impression of monetary privilege. All of this to say that no- they weren’t wrong to want to upcycle a couch. But neither are the people who think it’s unsanitary. I would not be afraid to take hand me down furniture from another person if I needed it- but I wouldn’t claim abandoned furniture. As someone with a mold allergy, it’s just not worth the risk.
@TheFangirlOtaku
@TheFangirlOtaku Жыл бұрын
@@LeBatteur fair. I'll admit I missed all that about it being in the rain then left in a garage to fester. I had it on in the background and kinda just came in when he started roasting her about it. I was also not serious about him being classist, I was being sarcastic. I know Kurtis is not an ass, there are much more actual classist people on the web. Granted, I also knew somebody was gonna take my comment a little too seriously. I understand you have a mold allergy, and that sucks, but it kind of changes the playing field for whether or not used furniture is as dangerous to others as it is for you. If it's risky for you, totally don't take it. Take care of yourself. That said, to me the couch looks fine and she will probably enjoy it for at least 6 moons before she buys a new one on Amazon because as you mentioned, she does look pretty well off. Never said she was poor, just that his commentary out of context was a little classist. Which it was. Again, I know Kurtis isn't some ignorant narcissist. I was just trying to point out something I noticed with a little humor behind it. Also I know what a major metropolitan area looks like, I live in one of the crappy cities around Chicago. Did you not read my request at the bottom, friend?
@samaraisnt
@samaraisnt Жыл бұрын
@@LeBatteur It's classist to have the CHOICE to turn it down because you can buy new furniture. You do realize many people will never have like 8000$, or even half that, to buy new furniture? It takes more than one couch to furnish a whole house... So they have no other options. It's classist cause you didn't even consider that other people don't have the options you have to turn down the cheapest widely available option. Ofc everyone would LIKE to buy new furniture if they could afford it because it comes with less risks. The point is they can't. Calling other people gross for their only option is gross.
