Flawless videos. I've been learning to produce through Ableton (juke, beats, etc etc) and been looking to learn more about older production techniques. You've definitely made every single video so clear cut and straight to the point. Thanks for the lessons.

basslines seem to be the most challenging thing to me... which is sad because i play bass in a band hahah i sometimes use my bass guitar but playing bass live and recording bass and getting a good sound are two very different things. usually i use a midi keyboard and play basslines for my hip hop beats but even that is difficult to get an oldschool sound instead of a corny digital sound. this method seems very promising my friend. thanks!

Im so confused ?? What makes this natural minor scale different from the melodic minor scale on the mpc, if the stickers on the pads are marked,in the exact same order
@wangjunxi111 жыл бұрын
Fam, this pattern on pad is same with the Melodic Minor Scale, so what is the different?

I see what you did, you used the sixth note of the cmaj scale which is A, the relative key to cmaj. So you using the Natural minor scale in the key of Am? Does this work with all samples, even for samples in another key? How do you decide which formula you want to use, and can I do this with the major scales like you do with the minor scales? Dope videos man!

Damn that's ill fam. I play my basslines off keyboard but i like this idea right here i will most def have to try it as i strictly play by ear.

love the videos fam . just wanted to know on the filter and resonance whats the best settings for that hip hop bass .
@Verysickbeats10 жыл бұрын
Thanks angel colon As far as settings, i have no best setting i can tell u. I change up every time and it depends on the sample and your ears. I tweak it until i like how the bass sounds. Its all about your preference and just experimenting. Hip hop is freedom of expression in my humble opinion PERIOD...

Hey love the videos, thanks for taking the time to help other people! I had one question- how do you determine what pad will be mapped to what note when the 16 levels is used. For example, you have your pads marked with that tape to tell you which ones are certain notes. Wouldn't that change depending on the note you sample, or what scale you want? Do you always sample the same note, or you base it on the 'root note' of the scale or how does that all work?
@Verysickbeats10 жыл бұрын
yogaframe jones Exactly right, it would change depending on the note u sample so the most important part of the technique is the formula NOT the specific note for a specific pad. Any note can be on any pad and as long as each pad is programmed to play chromatically u are good to go. The scales and chords still work, but depending on what actual note is on a specific pad will determine the key. U could sample an F note and put it on pad 2 if u wanted and go from there, ect... hope that helps
@alphonsity11 жыл бұрын
can you only use 16 levels for MPC becuase im using a mpd26 and it wont let me do exactly what your doing for your keys. for example like whenever you let go of the pad the sound stops pleasee help im really struggling

What good JFilt, I drew out all of the formulas from your bass line series so I could practice all 5 patterns. As I did this I found that Melodic Minor & Natural Minor use the same exact keys: 2, 4(root), 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 14 & 16. Could you let me know what the difference then is between these or if I incorrectly copied these patterns? Thanks for even doing this is the 1st place.
@Verysickbeats10 жыл бұрын
My apologies: I should've explained that the melodic minor actually has two different scales: Ascending and descending...The one i did was the descending melodic scale which is the same as the natural minor scale...the only difference is going up the scale (ascending) is the same as the melodic minor. Its silly but hey there it is... In my #16PadScaleManual i include the jazz minor scale which is the melodic scale exactly the same in either direction. Hope that makes sense don't wanna sound too technical...

thanks jfilt, really helpful but i have one quick question... are the chords you're playing the bassline over in the key of c major? is that what gives it that nice unresolved feel
@Verysickbeats10 жыл бұрын
Yes and no..dont wanna get too technical but the chords are really in A minor which is relative to C major...Thats why i explained the scale at the beginning.
@lozoz10 жыл бұрын
***** ok i gotcha, it makes sense. thanks for a great series
@liammcooper10 жыл бұрын
Amin is Cmaj's relative minor. Which means they have the same key signature, AKA the same notes, or rather, the notes that are going to be flatted and sharped are the same (which in the case of Cmaj/Amin is 0 flats and 0 sharps). However it's not the same because the scales themselves begin on different roots. Cmaj starting on C, Amin starting on A, obviously. So if you were to play a progression in Cmaj, while the notes would be the same, it would be off-key if you played an Amin scale riff over it. Correct me if I'm wrong
