Lightning is better for me because i do a lot of shallow river trips, and the inline rudder is far better then an external one, plus for camping on the tiver you need as much surface storage and weight capacity as possible so lightning wins for me, theres nowhere to but things in the front of the shearwater but it is a very nice boat

@@AliexFolgueira It seems odd to me that they put a rubber gasket around the hatch to seal it, but then when you put the plastic tub thing in there, it doesn't have a gasket. It seems like it would have made more sense for them to put the gasket on the lid. Then it will always seal. Maybe that's not where the water came in, I don't know.... just a thought.

I have the lightning strike v2 or 3 and if you open the hatch in front of the seat water can get inside. If it stays closed I haven't experienced any water getting in. I take mine offshore and barely have any water inside my yak.

U used to be on vibes pro staff team but recently left the team a couple months ago as I did not want to be tied down to just one kayak brand. I have wanted to try out one of the lightening strike kayaks for awhile now but not sure when I will get a chance too. Shearwater just for the looks. Lighting strike looks like a buick compared to the shearwater, but if i had to buy one I will stick with my Hobie compass for now. Lighter, better drive and warranty + made in USA.
@paytenblevins34013 жыл бұрын
How does it have a better warranty? Vibe has a lifetime hull warranty and I was told a 5 year on the drive. The USA would be nice but that’s just the way it is, but even though the compass is lighter it also holds less weight and has way less features. The drive is for sure better though just bc they have had them out for 20 years

The lightning strike has a first responders discount, not sure if Vibe does or not. I need a kayak around these prices with a weight cap of 500+ lbs. I'm an average Joe at 170, but I like to hunt. Gear and deer = weight. I like the lightning, but that weight cap is a little low. Thanks for the comparison, I've been looking for these drives with around this price point, this was very helpful! Thanks.

You can't reach the shearwater gear track if the seat is back when using the pedal drive... after having a shearwater i would take the lightning strike over it. The shearwater pod sucks also.
@AliexFolgueira3 жыл бұрын
The built in drive holder thingies is huge
@kevinfitz37213 жыл бұрын
You can upgrade the pod that holds the drive and get a hobie 180 for it, idk a solution for the tracks but the other problems are easily fixed. The lightning strike drive is just as bad if not worst then the vibe and the seat isn't nearly as comfortable, its less stable unless you take into account secondary stability. The shearwater seems to do better with upgrades and has better colors imo but most certainly no kayak in this cheap price range is going to be what you truly want unfortunately

@@AliexFolgueira hell yea, showed a lot of features in comparison. I’m leaning towards vibe as I’ll likely get an outrigger for ocean trips, so stability wouldn’t matter as much. So with that, I’ll take the bonus features, if I went inshore only I’d be taking the lightning strike. The lightning strikes fin drive cut out, so the fins fit flush, were what got me originally intrigued when I saw it. As much as I love watching Robert field, I’m leaning towards shearwater.
