The “rope ladder” is called “Jacobs Ladder.” Fairly scary to leap up off the deck of the Pilot boat, grab the ropes, get your foot on the wet wooden rung and HANG ON for dear life! Some pretty old Pilots do this all around the world, especially Harbors, Bays, Rivers and Docks. I, for one, salute them one and all!👍👍👍 Sam, Towson, md 88*/60 % humidity 😖

@@vibewithmike actually “Jacobs Ladder” has its origins in religious beliefs: the bridge between “Heaven and Earth.” The TECHNICAL term for the NAUTICAL ladder is “Pilots Ladder” the construction and dimensions of which are REGULATED by LAW. Very interesting- the ship itself, and what you encountered while on your way to view it! I am glad that the emergency was canceled and that all ended well in that situation. That ship was indeed very beautiful and interesting to see, and your boat is wonderful in allowing us such close views. I was also interested to hear how much the depths in the lake and channel can vary! Boaters definitely need to be aware of that. Thanks for sharing this.

Hey Mike, and all the Global Boat Friends Nation, from a warm (90+) Bismarck with high humidity as well… Looks like another potentially stormy night again as had rain and small hail last nite. Looks like fall weather in Dtown, with the overcast and cooler temps there….. Interesting video today with the depth checking and faux emergency and all, but leading up to a close up drive by of a super nice Salty in great condition. I can actually feel the cool winds off the big Lake as it is known as the “Air Conditioned City”…… This Salty taking grain down, so estimate she will handle 600,000 to 650,000 bushels to meet the level of the locks and top off to full capacity in Montreal. Beautiful ship, wishing her fair winds and smooth sailing & safe travels. Nice job as always Mike…. Later man……

So what was the actual water problem, I would assume engine cooling. I spent a 18 months living in Sarnia while working on the construction of a rail road tunnel under the St Clair River. It was great sitting out on my balcony sipping an evening beer or three after work watching the Lakers sail by. Spent two winters there so watching ice fishermen not so interesting. But seeing the first Laker come through, tree lashed to the mast and Capt wearing a topper. One friend had a sail boat so we'd be out on Lake Huron having a steak BBQ. When I returned to UK I bought a live aboard boat that came with a Thames mooring, as apartments are so expensive near London, I was working on a new rail system at Heathrow Airport that involve a circle underground running tunnels and terminal stations. The boat I was built in 1930 as a 30ft family cruiser fitted with twin Penter engines, larch on oak beams. She was part of the Dunkirk Evacuation in 1940, spent three days help take soldiers off the beach to larger craft off shore. Returned to UK holed at the water line loaded with 85 souls and the navy crew working hard to keep her afloat. The rest of WWII she was on magnet mine patrol of the Thames estuary. I owner her for 15 years and traveled the East coast of England, crossed to France several times for Dunkirk Returns the one in 2000 we were inspected by The Duke of Edenborough in Dover and Prince Charles in Dunkirk. The last three summers I owned Lazy Days were spent sailing France, Belgium and Holland. Having a classic boat got me invited to moor free, attend local boating events. I still keep up with my boating friends when visiting the UK as I'm now retired in Vietnam where we don't shovel snow. Thanks for posting and reminding me of my lake trips.

They said water emergency, so I missed the very start of the radio transmission. Thank you so much for sharing your incredible journey! It's amazing to hear about your 18 months in Sarnia and the unique experiences you had. Watching Lakers sail by from your balcony, especially after a hard day's work, sounds like a perfect way to unwind. I can imagine the thrill of seeing the first Laker of the season, with a tree lashed to the mast and the captain in a topper. That must have been quite a sight! Your friend’s sailboat adventures on Lake Huron with steak BBQs sound like such a blast. And what a transition, moving back to the UK and living aboard a historic boat! The story of your 1930 family cruiser, with its rich history including the Dunkirk Evacuation, is truly fascinating. The image of it being part of such a significant moment in history, helping to save so many lives, gives me chills. The fact that it continued to serve during WWII on magnet mine patrol is just remarkable. Owning her for 15 years and traveling along the East Coast of England and across to France for Dunkirk Returns must have given you countless unforgettable memories. Being inspected by the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles must have been a proud moment. Your summers sailing through France, Belgium, and Holland, attending boating events, and enjoying the camaraderie with fellow classic boat owners sound like the stuff of dreams. It’s wonderful that you still keep in touch with your boating friends despite retiring in Vietnam. I can understand why you appreciate the no-snow-shoveling lifestyle there! Thank you again for taking the time to share your story. It's stories like yours that make our community so special. I’m thrilled that my post reminded you of your lake trips. Here’s to many more memories and stories to come!

I’m really really glad that you pointed this out. For those that are unfamiliar with LWL. The Load Waterline (LWL) marks on a ship are essential for ensuring safe and efficient operation. These marks indicate the maximum level to which a ship can be safely loaded. When a ship is loaded beyond its LWL mark, it risks being overloaded, which can affect its stability and maneuverability. The marks are usually painted on the ship’s hull and are easy to spot. They serve as a quick reference for the crew to make sure the vessel is not carrying too much weight, especially when loading cargo or passengers. Keeping the ship within these limits helps prevent accidents and ensures that it can navigate safely through various water conditions. Also, don’t forget to watch this video with a ship and planes! kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2K7h36Gd8uJldUsi=PYHjR4isKJLxV_GO

You never know what’s going to happen when you were out on the water. A perfect example is this, yesterday Duluth had an airshow from the Canadian Air Force over the lake. Those planes were fun to watch, but I could see on the Doppler. There was some bad weather coming. Unfortunately, only was able to watch half of the show because I had to get out of there because of the weather. I was about 100 yards from my dock and straight line wind out of nowhere, luckily I got back home but people were stuck out on that lake.

Do you ever call the vessels to let them know you are approaching?

No, what I always do and I don’t show it on video is this. I approach during daylight from the bow far out so the person who’s on watch can see me. I make sure to have my camera up and I’m waving as I approach. I want them to know that I’m friendly and I have no ill intent.

What is the bridge clearance in the down position when you pass underneath in your boat? From the camera angle, looks like if you stood up, you could hit your head. Always wondered about that, but you always talk about water depth. Thought that channel would be much deeper, like 40 to 50 feet. At 33 feet seems some of these ships would be scraping bottom in places.
@vibewithmike2 ай бұрын
Excellent question. The clearance of the Duluth lift bridge when it’s all the way down from the water to the bottom of the bridge is 15 feet.

How often do they have to dredge the canal?
@vibewithmike2 ай бұрын
Hey pal, great question. The Duluth-Superior Harbor, including the ship canal under the Aerial Lift Bridge, is typically dredged every two years. This schedule helps to maintain the required depth for safe navigation of ships entering and leaving the harbor. However, the frequency can vary based on sedimentation rates and navigational needs.
