Hate to see the concrete getting cracked like that. Those cracks are supposed to go inside the control joints. I think this shows that the sub base wasn't prepped properly. Thankfully, they shouldn't move any more. But I'm glad you're getting some more storage/work space, brother!

I'm from Ontario Canada so excuse my head scratching if it passes code down there, but take a look at your beam details and make sure it's correct. The beams are side mounted to the posts which is usually a no-no because your entire roof load is relying on the nails and bolts fastening the beam to the posts rather than the beam sitting on top of the posts.

Someone said they were notched?
@kurtdavis758810 ай бұрын
There is nothing wrong with those beams. Structurally sound like that.
@seen483 ай бұрын
I think @ZipKickGo is saying the side mounting of the beam to the posts is the issue not the beam itself. It does seem like a strange way to mount the beam. I believe they should be on top of the posts with brackets on the beam to the post. I would have gone with way longer joists and had zero posts. They call them pole barns up in the Ohio area, from another channel I follow and seen built.
@kurtdavis75883 ай бұрын
@seen48 the way you're describing is completely fine and structurally sound too. Using brackets would have been a cheaper and faster way to build a solid barn too. The way he built this one is more time consuming but stronger and some people like the look of the notched wood.

Recommendation for those cracks, expansion joints and pock marks from those support nails. Have the contractor, or you can do it it’s easy, put in a product like Sikaflex. Im a little surprised about the cracking all over I would think they would haves used wire mesh lifted on "chairs" to keep it a few inches off the dirt to get the concrete all around it. Might have stopped that cracking some and also a vibrater along the sides to fill voids. Once you start putting cars in there with their weight might crack more. I wonder if the concrete was the right mix and strength and when the cold hits it might crack more.

@66skate11 ай бұрын
He's in the South where the ground doesn't freeze, so I don't believe the time of pour was the problem.. The contractor is getting the blame here when it may be Derek trying to save money, even though he can well afford to do things right. He had a big problem at the other garage with water drainage that seemed obvious and cost a bundle to correct after the fact. Derek mentioned saving money so many times, you would think he was on a shoestring budget. Someone did a study a while back and concluded that Derek brings in $141 per minute day in and day out. This was even before Mottortrend and O'Reillys and what other projects, so money isn't an issue here.

Little Grip Garage is next!!!! LoL Great to see everything coming right along for you and Jessica. Keep up the great work Derek! Are they going to inject the cracks in the concrete or cut out the slabs and re cement them?

Those cracks, come from uneven soil compaction.

No one is more deserving than you and your family. Thank you for such down to earth entertainment on both of your channels. God knows we all need it these days.

The Bieri family farm is coming together awesome Derek! About the treated lumber dilemma.... I'm wondering since they've gone away from using CCA to a lesser quality ACQ treatment, that may be part of the issue. Regardless, you made the right choice to not bury the posts. A guy will never get used to seeing all that red dirt.... us Minnesotanites have been blessed with rich, black dirt. Sending blessing from the tundra.

I grew up around Detroit and moved to North Alabama 18 years ago. I still can't get used to that dirt. It's a menace if you have a pack of dogs like I have.

The progress on the Barn was good to see! I noticed that the construction of the concrete slab which looks like it was 4” to 6” thick should not have cracked in such a way at least as soon as it did! Was there a problem with the concrete contractor? I hope you received some sort of compensation!? To have a new floor like that is mind boggling! The rest of the barn is going very well ! Looks great! It is quite an undertaking! Especially since you have to produce other content for the main them of the show! Plus the motor trend show! You are a very busy Feller! Always great to see you and the family progressing! Regards Mad Mike S. From the freezing ass cold of Colorado ❄🌨🥶⛄………

Looking real good. My father having been a builder I know those cracks would bother him too. What are they going to do about it?

Wow too bad on those cracks, they could have been completely avoided though. That pad shouldn't have cracked for years from now. Other then that I love that barn man!!!

It be nice if some the windows could be opened on the upper one's without needing to climb up to them For airflow ! So far it's looking great !

I'm proud of you, Jessica and the boys. I don't know how you do it. I'd be happy just have your shop, let alone that new barn. Congratulations Derek.
