We used a fiberglass tape with an RTV based adhesive when we wanted to hold uninstalled tiles in place or whenever we needed to secure something to the vehicle tiles. The tiles themselves had a Nomex felt pad about .160 inch thick between the rigid aluminum skin and the ceramic tile. Both bond lines were bonded with good old GE RTV 560 silicone adhesive and attached them very securely despite the perceptions that they fell off! Looking forward to dial installation on the safe. Keith, I'm watching this project progress and enjoying it very much. It's a pleasure to watch you work and I always seem to learn something. If I may, I'd like to offer a technique I learned years ago about removing tape or similar adhesive-backed materials from delicate substrates. It essentially boils down to shear loading vs. tensile loads. The trick is to remove the backing or tape at a 180 degree angle (back over itself). This technique minimizes tensile load on the bond line of the material as much as physically possible on a flat surface. Not that you had any problems but this method will never fail you! In case you wonder where I learned it, it was how we removed tape from the delicate tiles on the space shuttle. Keep up the great work. I eagerly await the next video Keith!

Keith A good way to apply the decals is to spray the area with fantastic or something similar. Take the backing off the decal and apply it to your area. you can then slide it around and position it on top of the fantastic. When ready hold one side and squeegee the fantastic out from under. It will stick very well, I have seen this done to semi-trucks and it never blew loose going down the highway Bill

I like the idea of making 2 draws and maybe even staining them the same weathered color as the small door. As for the carpet, as rough and weathered as it is you may just want to leave the inside of the safe as close to original as you can. Maybe you can get away with inserting some piping on the front carpet edge to give it a finished look. The decals look great and the safe is going to be a fine addition to any office or den.

Looking good Keith. I have a little tip regarding installing those types of decals. If you use a soap solution (dish washing soap like Palmolive in the squeeze bottle), just add a squirt in a cup of luke warm water and wipe the area where the decal goes, you can apply the decal and it will slide around until you get it exactly right. It also makes removing any bubbles very easy. It will usually dry in a few hours or overnight for sure. I was taught this by one of our police mechanics when we had to add some decals to the patrol cars. Looking forward to the rest of this terrific series! Regards, Rich

As many have said, a little soapy solution allows you to move the decals around until you have them position properly, i.e. window film, wallpaper, decals. The moisture is squeegee out and dries clear. Old decals used a wheat paste and then there's decupage. But you did do a 'painstakingly' good job.

I suspect you could use a concave cutter on the horizontal mill combined with a rotary table to machine matching acorn nuts. My dad had an old 1800's postmaster cabinet and it was lined in a green very fine felt, almost like a paper. Whenever I look in an old roll top or something I get flashbacks of that same green felt. That safe is looking fantastic.

Keith, you may find someone doing old home restorations who can find you a piece of old carpet from that era. Even if most of the carpet is worn out, there will be some parts which had large pieces of furniture like a table, bed or even a piano above, so that section could be like new. Just a thought. When I want something with an adhesive backing to absolutely stick everywhere, I burnish the entire surface with the bowl of a spoon. It really concentrates the pressure while not risking gouging up any edges. With the cover paper, gouging would not be an issue, but really getting that adhesive into complete contact with the surface can make a difference years down the road.

Leave them for a few hours and they will be fine . Doing it this way gives you time to get them in the correct place infact they can be slid about This method is used by model car people and the firms that do window tinting . Try it with some sicky backed plastic I think you will be suprised The safe is comming along very nicely Stuart

Be careful when clear coating over the vinyl decal. I had my gun safe painted and we put on a new browning deer head sticker and shot clear over it. The vinyl reacted with the clear and wrinkled up on me. I had to remove the decal and resand the door to remove the clear. I eventually had to go with a gold leaf rubbing to get the logo on it. The guy who put on the gold leaf told me that the first painter should have shot several light misting coats to cover the decal before shooting a heavy coat of clear. That might have prevented the wrinkling

Was just wondering if there is a huge mistake in how "Lovisiana Pvrchase" is spelled... from what it looked like in your video, they spelled the "U" in Louisiana and in Purchase with a "V" instead of a "U" or is that how they did the letter U back in the early 1900's? Oh and gotta say that me and my husband have enjoyed so many of your videos! We are restoring 2 Diebold safes. One which has the inner jeweler's door with the Eagle 161 lock and both the outer and inner door has the May 23 1871 patent, and so we GENUINELY appreciate how you take so much of your time to explain things in detail which unquestionably helps us since we have done many restorations such as jukeboxes, old Ford 9n and 8n tractors, De Laval cream separators, etc but this is our first time doing these awesome floor safes.
@VintageMachinery8 жыл бұрын
The "V" was done on purpose. This was common back during the era that the safe was made - to use the roman alphabet on things that you want to look "fancy". The Roman alphabet used "V" for "U". Same reason you see a lot of Court Houses that are inscribed on the front "COVRT HOVSE". Interesting history: www.pampamuseum.org/-why-v-instead-of-u.html
@80564432328 жыл бұрын
Could you expand on the "Patent" vs. "Patents?" I read (here in comments) where you said that it is seen both ways, and I was mainly wondering if it helped to date the safe or anything such as that. For example, did they print "Patent" up to, and "Patents" after a certain date or some-such? I found about a dozen or more images in a Google search, and all had the "S." I immediately thought it could be lots of people making the same mistake on restoration... Keith, I certainly enjoy watching your videos! Keep up the excellent work.

"In hoc signum vincimus," says the inside legend. It means in Latin "in (or with) this sign (or picture) we conquer.". Most appropriate title for this video. All you do is translate "sign or picture" as "decal". And conquer you did!! What a beautiful job. The Romans, of course, did not know from decals. As for the bottom carpeting, there are two schools of thought. One says "restore to new", the other :fix it, but let it look as if it had been used continously ever since it was built." My thought is that the outside will be "like new" so... if you can find some carpeting, OK, But follow your own taste.
