They just took the loose concept of pirates looking for treasure in the Caribbean, threw in a few references to the ride and built a completely new plot around it. Same for Castlevania: they just took the loose concept of Belmont, Sypha and Alucard trying to kill Dracula, built something entirely new around it and threw in a few homages.

The reason Castlevania works though is because the games themselves have so little story outside of the core premise. It's literally "go right and kill the things" so it's hard to say if it's even really an adaptation of anything. There's minor iconic elements like the whip and a few names, but other than that it was a blank slate for Ellis to do whatever with. Hence why there's this weirdly anti-clerical element to a series that never cared about religion aside for using it as a means to kill vampires and other creatures. Because Ellis is the most stereotypical neck-beard atheist ever. Castlevania works because there was nothing there to begin with other than pre-established archetypes. Basically a Solomon Kane rip-off with names you know and writing typical of everything Ellis works on.

Honestly I disagree with you specifically on the point of Bioshock being unadaptable. Bioshock has a lot of narrative meat beyond just the meta-commentary on videogames themselves. There's a lot of political and philosophical commentary going on in that game as well, and Andrew Ryan and Atlas are fairly interesting characters that could probably be fleshed out nicely by a good writer. I honestly think that it would probably be possible to replace the non-character player stand-in from the actual game with a more three-dimensional movie protagonist and still carry off all that stuff and the protagonist-is-a-slave twist effectively. That being said, I don't think there's any point in doing that because Bioshock already exists and already did it. A lot of the time my biggest argument against videogame movies is that they simply don't have a reason to exist and are pointlessly redundant. Maybe that's why it's hard to find talented people to work on what is in effect usually just a cashgrab for an existing IP.
@loserinasuit78806 жыл бұрын
Infinite allows for more storytelling due to the idea of multiple universes. A movie could be spun around Comstock's inner circle and his be more about his reactions to booker. As for the original two it could be about the decay of a splicer who's trying to get by and have him be killed by your character at the end of the movie.
@blackraptor11546 жыл бұрын
RicAdbur I feel like video game movies can work if a movie keeps to the source material and tries to tell a story rather than the “game’s story”. Take Bioshock for instance, instead of having the story be about Ryan or Fountaine or any of the Audio diary boys, make it about a simple hire gun, he’s making good money with Ryan but also gets put in many places and hired by many other people. Or maybe do the whole Burial at Sea thing and have it be about a detective trying to find someone’s little girl, hoping she hasn’t been sold off or shambling in the streets with a Johnny Topside.

@Obi-Wan_Kenobi6 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, I think that it is entirely possible to have a movie based on the video game. The problem is, almost all video game movies are adapting the wrong components of video games. Video game movies often focus on recreating the video game's most iconic stores and game mechanics. That is not what the focus should be on. Instead, the movie should focus on adapting 3 critical aspects. *1. The Characters* The movie should incorporate the original video game's most recognizable characters to some degree. Many characters have strong personalities, traits, and philosophies. This is not always the case (such as when the game stars a silent protagonist) but when it is, the movies should do its best to adapt the character to the big screen. You can make the adapted character the main character of the movie or you can have them play a supporting role to the main character if you want more freedom to create a new story. It really depends on the type of movie. I can imagine an Uncharted movie would have to star Nathan Drake or a Ratchet and Clank movie would have to star Ratchet and Clank. A Portal movie, however, should not really follow Chell, though it would have to incorporate Glados in some kind of way. *2.The Setting* This is one of the most important aspects that must be carried over in some way. This is what allows the player to be immersed in the world and is necessary in any film adaptation of a video game. A Mario movie must take place in the Mushroom Kingdom, Halo movie must take place is the Halo universe, etc. This is how you establish your movie's identity. You can even have new character and keep the familiar setting. This is also by far the easies thing to properly adapt. *3. The Themes and Messages* This is the hardest one to adapt but very necessary. If you really want to please the fans and be a true adaptation, you need to adapt the original video game's themes and messages. This is 100% possible but the film makers need to be given enough freedom to convey these themes the way a movie would, not the way a game would. Take your Bioshock example. You can make a movie about the futility of choice and the lack of free will (I'm sure movies have been made about this message) but you need to present this message in a different way for the movie. Convey it in the way a movie would convey it and still staying true to the message. The movie adaption should not be limited by the story players already experienced in the game. It should be new and expansive. It should not try and adapt gameplay. Take the Overwatch shorts for example. On of the reasons they are so good is because they focus on the characters and exploring the world those character inhabit. They feature game abilities but those abilities do not feel like in-game abilities, they feel like natural extensions of the characters' abilities and world. It has to be possible to adapt a video game into a movie, the film makers just need to focus on the right elements.
@caiosoares28346 жыл бұрын
I mean, we already have an example. Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva is a example of a movie adaptation.
@diegobendinelli26806 жыл бұрын
Based on these criterias the Metal Gear Solid Saga would make for some excellent movies, hell they mostly already are 75% movie and 25% game, the only issue is the maybe need to split them in parts due to how long they are (MGS4 has 12 hours of cutscenes, 12 FUCKING HOURS).

This is an incredibly reductive generalisation. Many games have very rich universes. The fact that you couldn't directly adapt the story of Bioshock into a movie doesn't mean that there is no potential for a good film in the world of Bioshock. All it takes is a bit of creativity. If you had a video game movie that was made as a passion project by a skilled director with an exceptional understanding of storytelling I'd be willing to bet it would be good. The story of a single survivor of a crashed ship having to survive stranded in the middle of an ocean on an alien planet isn't an inherently bad idea for a movie. In fact I think it sounds great. If you took that same movie and put a Subnautica label on it it wouldn't suddenly make the movie a bad idea. There's a lot of issues surrounding existing video game movies, but there's no reason they can't work.

@matriaxpunk6 жыл бұрын
You can adapt the story of a videogame into a movie, but not the videogame itself. I think that's the point he's trying to make. When you adapt a book into a movie, you adapt the story of the book, but the story is pretty much the book. In a videogame, the story is just half of what the videogame really is; and that's in the best case scenario. There are a lot of games that are mostly gameplay with very little story. The importance of the narrative in videogames is a pretty recent trend. That's why a movie about super mario brothers is always gonna be borring, because the story of the mario games is just an excuse to implement some new crazy gameplay mechanics.
@mattwillis78066 жыл бұрын
Cosmo on Twitter has actually said he thinks the Detective Pikachu movie might be good because it doesn't seem to be adapting that game's plot and instead seems to have it's own plot, just set in the Pokémon universe. Matt Willis Aren't Tim and Pikachu looking for Tim's father in both the game and the movie? Maybe it's not going to be exactly the same, but the main plot is still a boy looking for his father with the help of a talking Pikachu. So this would actually go against the whole point of his video.

To say that any kind of movie good is "Impossible" in a world where a 2 hour LEGO commercial can be good seems way too harsh. I think the problem is that they chose to adapt specific games rather than taking an existing universe and expanding it with an original story. Something like the Legend of Zelda would be a perfect thing to make into a movie since the games universe is built around reincarnations of the main characters in their own, mostly unconnected stories, so a new story unlike the others in the series would be expected rather than weird and unwarranted like Street Fighter.
@ThatRPGuywithtoomanyOCs5 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Many, many games *could* be adapted very well. Zelda like you said is an incredibly open, flexible world with cool magic and weapons. Metroid has awesome space pirates and sci fi tech, and if they wrote up a decent plot it could work as an action movie. But it would probably be hard to condense the last of us into a 2 hour film. It requires a dynamic relationship between the 2 leads, in addition to introducing people who haven't played the game to the world and concepts. Have people get emotionally attached to Joel, Sarah, Ellie, and explain the cordyceps, hunters, fireflies, and the FEDRA dictatorship in 15 minutes while still translating the full last of us emotional arcs and evolving nature of Joel and Ellie's relationship in an hour and 45 minutes. Not with that time limit, as Marcus said at the end as a series videogames can take the time to do world building that movies don't have in a series of some sort.

Those game examples are service level. Bioshock specifically. A story about a man who is compelled beyond his will would make for a compelling mystery, which is partly what Bioshock was. A movie adaptation usually should never paste a game action for action and beat for beat, cause what's the point. There can be great videogame movies. Hollywood just can't get it right. For the Resident Evil example, part of the joy of RE is the characters. The movies never got that right. All said, I completely agree about the Castlevania example and making games into shows over movies. Of course, anything with passionate and skilled people should do well.

Interestingly, Gore Verbinski once wanted to make a movie based on Bioshock, but all the studios said that they would not spend so much money on the effects of a movie that would be R-rated. Verbinski was like "But Bioshock is very dark and brutal, I'm not gonna make it PG-13"; actually I'm kind of glad he decided not to do it at all then, but i really would have liked to see that movie
@Alkerae6 жыл бұрын
"It hasn't been done, therefor it can't" is a pretty weak supporting argument. The problem as I see it (alongside 90% of your points) is that they try to get creative when they shouldn't, and they try to be faithful when they shouldn't. Take your bioshock example, you detailed a faithful movie adaptation for a game that would do best if the movie was a prequel. How did that city fall? "No gods, just man", how would a world like that feel? What kind of other experiments did those characters do? Tell a short story about the politics of that world pre-videogame, right as things are starting to turn to shit, without a protagonist showing up yet, and I think that could work out very well... if they found the right talent for it, which they won't, so it won't be good even in the very unlikely chance that it happens at all. Take mario for a second example, that movie was a clear cut case of "we were given money to make a plot for a setting that we have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what to do with". But, mario actually has some pretty interesting stories burried between the games, it's a couple of rival monarchies of different races with an unlikely hero arriving in the form of a sewage worker with a parkour hobby. It could be a plot of a diplomatic visit turned hostage situation, Die Hard that shit up! It could be awesome.
@Goblin_Hands5 жыл бұрын
Yes on Bioshock...no on Mario, unless it was a kid's movie. No way a giant spiked turtle is threatening...especially not with plumbers and a princess. And if you take that out, it may as well be a documentary on WW1 or 2 (too many nations/worlds). VG movies have potential, but only the ones with realism should be chosen. Donkey Kong or Mario probably would not make good movies.
@luriven48005 жыл бұрын
"It hasn't been done, therefore it can't" wasn't his argument, though. His argument was that video game stories tend to be hollow, due to having to primarily facilitate and drive the gameplay, which movies do not have. As such, adapting most of these stories would produce hollow results, which is evidenced in most of what *has* already been done. He does note examples of some video game stories which could be adapted well. More to the point, I very much agree with the notion that aiming to tell a story based on the game-world itself opens up a lot of avenues, which may produce good results. At that point, though, you're talking about the game lore, not its story. Similar to your examples, Dark Souls also has expansive and complex lore you could probably do a lot with. Its story, however, is quite plain and generic. He didn't comment on the adaptability of game lore vs game story in this video, but he has said on Twitter that the Detective Pikachu movie might be great, due to it likely drawing from the Pokemon world as a whole, instead of just the game story alone. So I think you're kinda on the same page here.

Revising a few elements that keep a game from translating well to film is acceptable as long as the script keeps a good STORY intact. Something that is passionate and made with heart, wit, message, pace, and visual flair for gamers and non-gamers alike to enjoy. Revising these few elements is acceptable as long as the script is respectful of the source material's canon without coming across as being outright Easter Egg pandering. I agree that this translation to film can't be done with the rudimentary plots of fighting games or simple action games, but I believe that video games that have made at least decent or interesting fiction in their own right are still possible to transform into objectively good fiction as films. For example, I believe that there could have been a good Warcraft movie to be made because it has a fairly deep fiction to draw from and recreate in service of a worthy storyline. Those cash cows in Hollywood, however? Fuck those guys. They have no understanding or care for the fiction of video games. They just make these things because they're out of ideas to make money quick. Even humble, caring filmmakers like Duncan Jones get fucked hard by these damned producers everywhere.

What the hell does the lack of interactivity has to do with a video game not being able to crossover into a movie? The main issue is, no real directors or story writers take video games or its material seriously. There have yet to be Christopher Nolan, Russo Brothers, James Wan, or other great directors to give video game movies a shot. Super Hero movies looked like it would never have a formula to crack back in the day and now look at the genre. Games like Gears of War, Castlevania, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid, God of War, Final Fight, Punch Out, Bioshock, Darksiders, Killzone, The Last of Us, Doom, Metroid, Fire Emblem, and a few others could definitely work as movies. The source material provides everything, weaving it together to make it into a movie takes talent and passion to make it work. Some games doesn't have much plot or a main protagonist to follow the story, thats even better because it leaves more room for the Writer to get a bit more creative and add in original plot elements but like I said most of the writers tackling these video game movies either have no experience or have a backlog of shitty movies they've done in the past. I have yet to see any writer or director take the source material seriously.

Great animation,story(based mostly on the second and third NES games),dialogue,it's Rated-R,with some nice gore,they use music from the game soundtracks and the voice acting is top notch(Alucard is voiced by the guy who played Dr.Balter in BSG and he's super snarky,Trevor Belmont is voiced by Richard Armitrage from The Hobbit trilogy). I disagree with the idea that a game "can't" be adapted into a good movie. I agree with your sentiment that none have been successful yet, and I agree that the lack of interactivity poses a challenge to the adaptation. However, I don't believe that it's impossible nor do I think it shouldn't be attempted. Let's turn the scenario around. Let's talk about movies that were adapted into successful games, or at least movie universes that were borrowed from to make a successful game. Goldeneye, Knights of the Old Republic, Spiderman, the Terminator 2 arcade game, Mad Max etc... These are examples of really good games that are based on a movie. I ask, is it impossible to imagine a world where these games came out first and then their respective movies were successfully adapted afterward? I think the answer is no. It's not impossible to imagine. If Goldeneye were released in a world without James Bond movies, it still would have been a critical success that revolutionized shooter mechanics in games. Then, if James Bond movies released afterward, I think they would still do well (even though, in this hypothetical situation, they would have been "video game movies"). Another point is, that lack of interactivity is not the only factor in what could potentially make a good video game movie. The only true factor that I think matters is whether or not people can make a good movie. The fact is, video game movies aren't bad BECAUSE they are based on video games, they are bad movies simply because they are bad movies. They tend to be a poorly written, usually poorly acted, poorly directed, incoherent mess. The fact that they were based on video games has nothing to do with their failure. If all the video game movies we have were still the same minus their video game heritage, they would still be bad movies. What the industry needs to do is focus on making a good movie. And that has just never been the case with video game movies. Video game movies are poorly made because there is never any care put into them. There's not much incentive to do so, which is why we have gone this long without a good video game movie. The industry uses video game movies in an attempt to make a quick buck. Hollywood knows they can sell a crap movie to the right demographic and make a profit if that demographic is big enough. It just hasn't ever been the case that a production team behind a video game movie really cared about capturing the feeling of its universe. They pump these things out for quick cash because they know they can attach a popular name to the movie, knowing it will sell based on that. What we need is for someone with a clear vision of a movie to make a good movie that is based on a video game, and not make a "video game movie." Take Logan, for example. Logan was an incredible movie, and I for one think it came very close to the feeling of what COULD have been an incredible Last of Us movie. You said video games don't offer enough content to be adapted into a movie, and I couldn't disagree more. Video games now are rich with content, lore, characters, and entire worlds all their own (not all, but a lot). World of Warcraft has more lore and story than the producers knew what to do with. The fact that movie failed certainly wasn't due to lack of content. So of course a good movie can be made about a video game. You just need a team working on it that cares, and puts the story of the movie first. If Marvel can make a successful movie about a sentient tree and a talking raccoon based on a comic book no one's ever heard of, then someone can make a good movie based on a video game. You just need to pick the right game with the right team and tell a compelling story in that universe. It doesn't even require the same characters to count as a video game movie. Hell, video games based on movies are telling stories in their respective universes all the time without using ANY of the movie's characters. Case in point: Knights of the Old Republic. KotOR was an amazing game that had NOTHING to do with the movie's characters or story. But no one would ever deny that it was a Star Wars game, because they told a story that took place in that universe. That's all you have to do. Tell a good story in a video game universe. I hope this paragraph also solves the "video games don't have a good enough plot" issue you had as well, since you aren't required to tell the same story as the game. Just tell a good story that's based in the game's world. To wrap up, I just don't think video game movies have sucked because of a lack of interactivity or lack of content, they sucked because they were bad movies. At no point when I was watching the Mario Bros movie did I ever think to myself "man, this would be a lot better if I were interacting with this mess." Nor did I ever think "WoW just doesn't have enough content for a good movie." All these movies sucked because they were badly written movies, NOT because they were based on video games. I maintain that a good video game movie CAN happen. It's just that one simply hasn't been made yet. Liked the video man. It was interesting and raised good opportunity for discussion. Keep 'em coming!

I sincerely hope this youtuber reads your comment. Very well said. Something I would add is that current producers do not respect video games as an art form. They see video games as mindless action and that's their approach to making movies based on them.
@fgodinho106 жыл бұрын
I agree 1.000% with everything you said. If you look closely, you can easily see that most movies adaptations of vgames really suck because they aren’t well produced to begin with. And that not necessarily has to do with the source material, but instead the lack of actually adequate people for the project. I could very much imagine a Dead Space movie adaptation happening, for example. Its not that mess of a story, Isaac and the (few) supporting characters have their depth and the other plot elements, such as the Unitology and The Marker, can very well be feasible to the viewers. Really hope Marcus read your comment, cause you shine some very good points there.

Second, the person writing the script is the creator of the games, Scott Cawthon. He recently just scrapped a script everyone said was good to make a great script. He genuinely cares about the movie and the fan. He quit Warner bros to go to Blumhouse. because they weren’t giving him freedom. He genuinely wants to make a good movie. He even addressed that the games are past peak popularity. “I just want to make a good film” is what he said. Third, Chris Columbus is Director. It’ll at least be a well directed movie. I’ll still go in with realistic expectations, but if any video game movie is going to be good, it’ll be this one.

Jacob Woodson This background you've provided on the FNAF movie sounds fascinating. I really didn't like the direction taken for Sister Location and Pizzeria Simulator at all, but FNAF could end up being a great murder mystery if it's actually pulled off. Some things that could really cement this in my mind: - Going all-out horror as the tone + (Again, NOT the direction of SL nor PS whatsoever) - Incorporate both the actual animatronics and the Nightmare versions + (this will pave way for the classic storytelling question "Is this real or in my head?") - Add a dash of black humour, but use it sparingly + (it will imbue the script with real personality like the first game with lines like "It's amazing that the human body can survive that long without the frontal lobe") - Round out the investigator and murderer as characters as they are not the icing on the cake, THEY ARE THE CAKE + (Give them real reasons and motivations for what they do and why they do what they do) - Provide an R-Rated cut supplied with healthy amounts of viscera to enhance the horror + (Tell a mature story to justify this cut; graphic content for adults with a satisfying message for adults and vice versa) - TONE DOWN THE JUMPSCARES + (Use slow, atmospheric scenes, delve into the twisted psyche and deliver on the supernatural to make the movie feel complete as horror) But only time will tell, I guess.

Because people think they can make a lot of money out of them. They see it's popular, and they go ''hey, maybe we can make money off of people who've never played the games AND the fans of the games''. Back then, Resident Evil kind of showed that people would flock to a video game adaptation, even if it was nothing like the games, so studios have been trying to replicate the success ever since in this new possible market. There's also the fact that they change shit to make them ''realistic'' or at least something most non-gamers are used to. It's why the demons in Doom are a dumb alien infection instead of actual fucking demons: movie producers probably thought audiences wouldn't go see a movie about a dude in space armor with a shotgun killing demons on Mars... They're fucking wrong, but that's what they believe and they have the power and money, so what they say goes. They're not familiar with the source material and as such have no idea how to translate that into a film. If there is a better example of how NOT to make a video game adaptation, look no further than Super Mario Bros. I don't even have to go into the Uwe Boll garbage; that fucker always did whatever the heck he wanted with no care or respect for the source material.

I remember back in the day I always assumed that it was the way that game movies were tired to the action genre that killed them. Which made me super excited for both resident evil and silent hill. The main appeal of those games was the sense of suspense that movies does well. Especially Silent Hill, if you gave it an uneasy and abstract David Lynch vibe it would have been amazing. Sadly, I forgot that these films are made for broadest possible appeal. So niche genres or abstract storytelling aren't going to happen. I think it's the scale and budget of the projects that makes them bad movies to be honest. But of course if you're doing a small scale passion project; why adapt a videogame when it comes with so many creative shackles? So there's the issue; no filmmaker is passionately fighting to adapt games. They have their own ideas, and, as you said, game ideas aren't super compelling for films.

This is a really great video ... if it was based on why video game films _tend_ to be bad. It also don't make sense that video game TV-shows are perfectly fine, but video game films are impossible. You say a video game TV-show can be good if it has good writers, but the same would go for a film. You say a video game film wouldn't work as several games don't have enough story to build on, but a video game TV-show would work if they fill out and make a proper story ... which you could do for a film too. Your "random" example of Bioshock is a game you deliberately picked out because it was a meta game about it being a video game. Choose any other video game that isn't about it being a video game. Plus that Castlevania TV-show, the first season (of 4 episodes) it's actually a film cut into multiple episodes, with less than 2 hours of actual content (minus credits and that).
@kuwabara71523 жыл бұрын
The TV show thing makes sense, as he explains, it gives you more time to space out whatever content you need present. Writing a TV show and a movie are different obviously, but the main thing is run time. It’s possible to do, but done well, that’s hard. He probably picked Bioshock bc that’s one of the most popular choices for an adaptation, plus it emphasizes his point on interactivity
@catsquidcatoverlord98423 жыл бұрын
@@kuwabara7152 But his point about adapting games into TV shows counteracts all but his 6th point, as those would if they are 100% ruining things for all movies, would 100% ruin things for all TV shows. There is no consistency in his agruement there, and his example also goes to show that you need to pick the right game to adapt into a movie, or maybe, idk, adapt things, as in change them, like say even for Bioshock I bet you could make a movie out of it just by telling a story in the world, maybe say from a POV perspective of rapture and their society, ending with it's fall, with the game starting right after the movie ends to connect it to the source material. It's not impossible, it requires actual skill and decent writers plus a willingness to take risks, but far from impossible, so saying that it is impossible is obviously false, and it's clear by the last point that The Cosmonaut Variety Hour knows this, as that point outright counterdicts his narrative, which leads me to only two conclusions. Either he did not read back his own script and apply logical thinking to it to realize that he is counterdicting himself majorly with the last point, as well as other minor counterdictions, or he knows that saying it's impossible is a lie with the evidence and arguments he has, and instead says it anyways. Neither of which make me want to watch any more of his content, nor respect his argumentation for any future points.

Prince of Persia is actually a good fantasy adventure movie... sure it doesn't have a lot to do with the VG except for the basic setting, but as a story and a movie, it works fine... it's certainly not a "messy plot". The 2000's Tomb Raiders were okay (the first one was quite successful), and the new one is okay too. The Resident Evil movies are okay as well... some more than others of course. There's no inherent reason why and adaptation couldn't be good, but the thing is, like any type of movie, it needs passion behind it (and sometimes a healthy budget helps). There's no reason why a Bioshock movie wouldn't work, because there's a lot of interesting elements in there for it to work. Sadly, most of the time they just go for a cash grab and make a shitty movie: THAT is the problem. Kinda like what happened with earlier SH movies.

You don't play uncharted because it's great to tap x while climbing, you play it because nathan is extremely charismatic and the grand adventures are magical. That can easily be adapted to a movie if you capture the essence of it. Yeah by definition games have to be interactive and movies cannot, that's why we "adapt" Obviously it's not gonna be the same but it can easily be a good movie with care. i.e. The last tomb raider, uncharted short movie, first MK, wreck it ralph, rampage. @@cjwrites Of course you don't have to (and shouldn't) cramp all the story into one movie, I was reflecting to the "Could you really adapt the story of The Witcher into a movie? ... No man." part. This statement is true imo, you couldn't adapt the story into a single movie (which I think he was referring to), you would need multiple movies (like LoTR) or a series, which we got. As we have seen with Sonic or Detective Pikachu, it's possible to make decent game movies, just not like they used to. You should grab the universe where the game is set in, and try to be creative with it, rather than straight up adapting it, which requires someone who knows their shit (and I think this can be quite difficult). A lot of good games have great stories because you experience it through your actions. It hits differently that way, and I think it's quite hard to adapt. So imo, most games are not fit to be made into a movie. But there are exceptions ofc.

Well, I’ve gotta write this thing that may or may not be read just because I don’t like absolutes. I’ll agree that Interactivity is what make games special. Taking that out does bring impediments, but that is why every game under the sun shouldn’t be adapted. What a good story adaptation needs is… a good story, and something that is unique about said story. So the examples you chose were pretty specific, and definitely don’t apply to all games. Of course choosing a game with a silent protagonist isn’t exactly gonna go over well. That’s not all games, and that game’s message was very specific. And with Metal Gear, with the exception of Psycho Mantis, that’s just breaking the fourth wall. Deadpool. A franchise that is built off of that. Adapting gameplay elements can be done cleverly. In the case of Uncharted, there are complete segments with cinematic set pieces that last for a good while that were inspired by movies like Indiana Jones. There you go. And on KZbin, there are plenty of videos that have solely cutscenes that last for several hours. So the idea that there isn’t enough content to last a feature-length film is BS. Again, your argument that what makes games as a medium unique cannot translate into something else stands true. But that isn’t what makes adaptations bad. What makes them bad is a lack of love, care, and understanding for the source material. Bad writing, bad acting, missing the soul of the game. If you never knew that Hitman Agent 47 was based off of a video game, then you still would think it’s a bland mediocre action movie with stupid writing. And on the subject of length. It takes most people at least a week to read a book they’re really into. No one’s gonna stay cooped up in a theater for more than 3 hours. That’s why they are adapted. The story is changed to make up for this. And the TV Show thing kind of debunked the whole “lack of interactivity” argument you made so…? I’ll agree that movie adaptations of video games usually are forced to work with lackluster plots. Here’s the thing. Videos games as a medium is still in its infancy. Ergo, video game adaptations are even younger. So what they have to work with are campy, arcadey plots. But we’ve seen a change within the past decade, a vast improvement in story telling. Hellblade and Red Dead Redemption. Hell, Celeste could be a minimalist art film about mental health if someone really tried. So I think that while what you said was true for the most part, it really doesn’t hit the mark of why these adaptations fail, and isn’t a good reason to believe that there can never be a good one.

A large portion of the time spent on reading is dedicated to things that don't take any time at all in a movie, though. "A picture's worth a thousand words" is an exaggeration, but it's true that the speed at which an audio/visual medium can convey information is vastly greater than the speed at which writing can. The plot is interesting, there's quite a unique world to explore...And the plasmids are actually central to the plot in the first and second Bioshock, it's the third one where they were an unnecessary addition. The whole concept revolved around free market, questionable science and consumer freedom run rampant, without state determined ethics, leading to a population that's disfigured itself into unstable hideous monsters that feed off one another in this return to survival of the fittest. It's one of the few games where all the powers are well contextualised (bar perhaps unleashing a flurry of bees from your arms...that was a bit of a stretch)
@novikovPrinciple6 жыл бұрын
And _how_ are you going to fit all of that into a single movie? Granted, I'm assuming you'd attempt to do this with only one movie, since no studio would ever sign off on making more than that right off the bat. For context, a speedrun of the game lasts an hour, with glitches. So if you're gonna have audiences sit down for two hours, what parts of Bioshock are you going to show them? The rise and fall of Rapture? The protagonist's "backstory"? It bears noting that much of the deeper story is hidden in voice recordings that the player has to go out of their way to get. The story that you _automatically_ get usually comes from radio calls. Either way, significant characters are always contacting the player remotely or indirectly. Anybody you meet in person is usually somebody who's trying to kill you. Meanwhile, the significant characters are usually behind bulletproof glass, in a room you just can't access. Play Bioshock again, then elaborate how you can condense all of it into a two-hour experience for a person who'll be holding popcorn instead of a controller.

@@novikovPrinciple I can easily see Bioshock working in a Shutter Island setting. Film starts of with a bunch of flashbacks explaining how Rapture came to be after the war and all that, show a news article about the discovery of adam, talk about its usage on little girls, show a little sister orphanage, all that good shit - this shouldn't really take longer than 5 minutes to give people an idea as to what is going on. Fast forward to a TEN YEARS LATER line and the plane crash. After that it's basically just the main story of the game where you are saving a bunch of little sisters with a bunch of flashbacks every so often. You just focus on the main characters of the story, show a bunch of splicers, explain the protagonists story via flashbacks, re-explain what little sisters/big daddys are, show some kewl magic shit and have Jack kill Fontaine. You end with Jack going back back to the surface with the no little sisters killed ending and add a post credit scene where Lamb talks about going to town on Rapture. Have a bunch of plot twist and bamboozlements, false revelations, misleadings and all that stuff in there (much like Shutter Island) and bam, you've got yourself a franchise setup with a movie that doesn't require any prior knowledge and can just be seen on its own.

Grandfather_Paradox I mean yes, there’s a lot of content in Bioshock that would be impossible to fit into a feature film. But then consider Star Wars and how much extra content there is after the release of the first film. You still got a sense of that rich sprawling universe within A New Hope, but didn’t have to see every inch of it to know that it’s there. There’s a foundation to build on and if they wanted to make a BioShock franchise you could just start with the basics... a man who discovers it, the big daddies, the splicers. Besides, I’m not even saying they SHOULD make a bioshock film, I agree that great games usually come from a concept that already works best as a video game, and not a book or a film etc. I just found it odd that out of ALL the games you could choose to use as an example, Marcus chose Bioshock.
@sailormoon2625 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I feel like if Hollywood/the Silver Screen going to do adapt Bioshock, they should adapt the characters and lore from the Bioshock Rapture book by John Shirley. It had interesting original characters and far better developed canon characters that are present throughout the story, and having a pre-fall Rapture narrative will allow general viewers to enjoy the political and moral context of the game series without even touching the game itself.

Video game movies can be done really well, and it has nothing to do with them being different mediums. RE 7 could be its own movie, God of War (2018), and even the Devil May Crys. The problem is the people who are adapting it are more often than not just run-of-the-mill industry workers, and seldom people who care deeply about the property they're working with. Unlike comics, which have 60-80 years worth of fandom, video games are much smaller in that regard despite the industry's scale.

Dude preeeeeaaach!!!! I've been dying to see Hitman be adapted into a series but they keep trying to do movies. I REALLY think there could be a cool adaptation of Agent 47 AS A SERIES. Same goes for Last of Us (when Sam Raimi announced a movie), I feel like Last of Us is WAY too long to be a movie and would work better as a Netflix limited series or something. TV Series are the future for video game adaptations. Movies are a bit too restrictive to allow good video games to be adapted into interesting narratives.

I disagree with you, but only partially. Yes, games are meant to be interactive and movies are not, but let’s look at a game that does cinema well: Overwatch. What makes Overwatch cinematic shorts good? Why aren’t they bad like every other cinematic version of a game? Depth and exposition. It gives me an insight into the characters that I wouldn’t otherwise have, and that’s what game movies need to do as well. If I was making a halo movie I wouldn’t make one based off of the games that we already have since those stories have already been fleshed out. Instead I would make it based off of master chief as he was growing up. Base it around blue team’s training or early missions. Yeah, there are books for that, but not many people have read them. It would do a good job at teaching us who blue team is and why they matter which gives them more depth in Halo 5 and 6. Or maybe we do something completely different and focus on a marine as he fights on the first halo ring. Master chief would make an occasional appearance but he wouldn’t be the protagonist. A game movie should be about world building to give us a better understanding of the universe, but there isn’t really a game movie out there that shoots for that which is why they are typically terrible. I would put this all in the same realm as comic book movies. For the longest time they were all garbage, but whenever marvel decided to build an entire world with real characters that grew with every movie they proved that it was possible to do comic book movies properly.

I do wonder if Overwatch would translate as well to a feature film as it does to a short film. I mean, the universe is so big and there are so many characters and situations that I wouldn't know what to tell in a 2-hour movie. Plus a lot of the shorts rely on the viewer already knowing some of the backstory of the game and characters. An animated series with an ensemble cast on the other hand, could probably work
@pippo171736 жыл бұрын
@@takahashierik Over watch can be movie or a tv show but I want a tv show out of it. The building blocks is there and it can easily be the best thing to ever happen from overwatch. Plus it would fill the void of my dying wait on TF2 animated series and shorts.

@@takahashierik Overwatch seems like a property that could be easily adapted as a cartoon or an animated movie. Some characters might get scrapped or not show up, but I feel like it can work if they play it like Big Hero 6. A large cast of characters but focus on one of them as the main emotional anchor. The others can be explored later or as the film goes on. I would rather have an Overwatch show, but a film can work.

But games can tell stories that are good even on their own. Or at the very least cool scenarios that are worth exploring. Take Warcraft. There is no reason at all why a Warcraft movie would have to be bad. There is a well developed world, interesting characters, and tons of lore. There already is a whole epos that can be adapted to film pretty straight forward. Hell that game franchise spawned whole novel series. But the movie just introduced some really dumb unnecessary characters and had questionable writing. That was a writing problem of that particular adaptation, not a Warcraft problem. And I really don't see a conceptual issue with making a good Bioshock movie. You have a premise (Ayn Randian society home horribly wrong), an aesthetic, and some details and mechanics to incorporate - but there is a good story in there. Just don't be a dumb robot who tries to translate the game 1:1 into movie form. Just like a novel takes some adapting (good example: GoT S1-4, bad example: 50 Shades of Grey), so does a game.
