This song is a double entendre about the hypocrisy of the US criminal justice system, particularly drug laws. The line about weeping shades of indigo is probably a) because he just liked the poetry of it and thought it sounded cool and b) indigo is a color associated with spirituality and shamanism. My theory is that he's basically poking fun at those who deem themselves the moral authority and invoke religion as a moral guide to suppress other people's pursuit of their own spirituality. I.e., "you shouldn't do drugs because the bible says it's bad". But I could be wrong. That's what's great about Tool; their song meaning are ambiguous and can be interpreted however the listener sees fit.

"The Pot" = Marijuana, and what hypocritically calls the kettle black (pissed all over my black kettle) I dont believe it is so much directly about weed, as it is using imagery to paint it as a perfect example of the overall message, which is, hypocrisy runs rampant, primarily in those who are in a position to condemn or point fingers, i.e. judges, lawyers. My belief is that they are basically saying it is very difficult to objectively be judged anymore because everyone is biased and more often than not, evidence or a lack thereof won't override someone's beliefs or bias, especially if they are guilty themselves. People being harshly punished for marijuana or the amount of racial prejudice in our justice system are simply examples of their whole point, which is not the pot, but is indeed the hypocrisy. Weeping cozened shades of indigo = tears, shades of blue is representative of sadness, weeping directly means crying Lemon juice up in your eye = false tears that were produced unnaturally, without emotion, in an attempt to feign sympathy or sadness
@savitrisdisciple5 жыл бұрын
@@VinAndSori For me, cozened = compromised, and indigo was the the dye used to provide the colour that edged the togas of Roman senators, so, compromised politicians and their fake tears, summarizing their hypocrisy

You must have been high " someone sitting on their high perch and judging others. Tool songs have many meanings and Maynard is a Genius with multiple meaning lyrics. There are so many songs from this band alone that are just awe-inspiring, I could sit here and list a ton of them. The reason they take so long between albums is because they base their music on real-life experiences; so they have to "live" for awhile to create more content. They just dont sit around and just make up lyrics about nothing/random stuff which makes them that much more amazing.

Maynard is specifically referring to the Indigo's on the Margaret Lovatt emotional color wheel, two of them are Trust and Authority... also to Weep, is to Drip and cozened is past tense of cozen, cozen means to trick/deceive or obtain by deception, put all that together = Dripping of trust and authority obtained by deception. Lemon juice in the eye is a saying for when you're blind to the wrong you are doing or that's going on around you.

This song is a quadruple entendre... Squared.
@jeffmurray16816 жыл бұрын
Yep, with a lot of artistic license thrown in. All of the lyrics can't be broken down into precise meaning. Its the nature of song lyrics. Sorta like poetry.
@plexus6 жыл бұрын
jeff murray ... uhhh not really... this song is just about one of the most straight forward songs tool has. The meaning is obviously about the hypocrisy of the authorities dealing with the war on drugs... specifically dealing with the crazy scheduling and attitude toward marijuana over the past century. And the lyrics are pretty easily interpreted... hardly needing much “artistic license” to interpret this song’s meaning.
@jeffmurray16816 жыл бұрын
I don't think you know what I meant by "artistic license." Hint: The listener doesn't use artistic license to interpret a song. The writer uses artistic license in writing lyrics that convey a meaning, but also fit into the meter of the song. Therefore, lyrics are often not as straight forward as when writing a normal statement.
@plexus6 жыл бұрын
jeff murray ... lol... I know exactly what artistic license is... I’m a professional artist. Lol... literally went to Art School and got a Bachelor’s degree in Media Arts and Animation... haha... I can see how you thought I meant it like the listener using THEIR artistic license in interpreting... but the way I meant it was the listener listening to it, interpreting it in a way that actively considers the writer of the lyrics’ taking liberal use of THEIR artistic license to draw meaning out of something thickly abstract... yeah, I worded it in a weird way I guess... I guess I should have written out something like... “hardly needing to invoke Maynard using very much “artistic license” to interpret this song’s meaning” But it still makes sense to me the way I wrote it, assuming that both the reader of the comment and I know what artistic license means... I mean... doesn’t most middle schooler know what artistic license means? Lol

Great reaction. This was the song that introduced me to drums as more than a back beat in music. As to the Pissing on kettles... I've always felt Maynard was creating a non sequitur from two metaphors that shouldn't work together but somehow both lyrically and thematically does work. The expression "Don't be pissing down my back and telling me it's raining" is essentially a crude way to say don't take me for a fool. And the pot calling the kettle black needs no explanation. Together I think Maynard manages to say two things at once beautifully. Just what I took from it.

I really think you two will enjoy TOOL Wings of Marie (Part 1) and 10,000 Days (Part 2). The singer Maynerd's mom Judith Marie was very religious and suffered an aneurysm when Maynerd was 11 which paralyed half his mothers body and when she past away about 10,000 days later do to cancer he dedicated these songs to her. Though Maynerd is not religious he is very spiritual. Knowing the history of his mother and the love he has for her it can bring one to tears.

You got it pretty dead spot on. "Weeping shades of cozened indigo" is talking about people who cry tears shaded blue with their sadness over a situation but it's all false and for show (cozened) and it's just like getting lemon juice in your eye and claiming you're crying about something. Tool's lyricism is just one of the facets that set them on an entirely different plane than other bands. Then add in phenomenal musicianship that builds layered and complex sounds using rhythms, layers, instruments, and unique time signatures that are at the top of the game in complexity. When you combine that all with lyrics that are not only eloquent but have dual meanings and they deal with everything from high-level mathematics, philosophy, religion, physics, social, political, economic, environmental, existential and the very concept of reality. If there was ever a band that is worth time exploring in depth, Tool is it.

No. "They" didn't. Maynard did. This was addressed during a podcast appearance with Lars Ulrich. During the writing and recording process by the other members Adam Jones and Justin Chancellor realized that the overall count of the music relative to the time signature fell in line with the Fibonacci Sequence. The only member of the band to intentionally write on the song following the sequence is Maynard. The rest was pure happenstance. So, no. Tool didn't write a song following the sequence with any intent. Maynard wrote lyrics as a result of the discovery that the song did as such. You can find this interview here on KZbin.

Yo, this comment is a few months late, but regarding the line 'crying tears of cozened indigo' - you got it figured out, it's referring to fake tears. Cozened indigo... lemon juice refers to the make up running on the faces of the holier than thou Tammy Faye Baker types who hypocritically and, for the show of it, judge people from their HIGH horses. Just my take.

Clown from slipknot said once he was looking at a rotting deer corpse or goat corpse or something dead and noticed how the maggots were crawling all over one another and were almost as one and he was reminded of a crowd at a slipknot concert, the way everyone was merging together and jumping and doing everything in unison and almost working as one, just like the maggots he saw that day.

Great analysis and review! One key point I think you guys missed is he isn't unknowingly being a hypocrite by judging hypocrites, he clearly states that he himself is a hypocrite as are all humans, it's a little bit like Right in Two in the sense that mixed in are some themes of human nature. 'Liar, Lawyer, MIRROR' show me, what's the difference?' As in even when he looks at himself in the mirror he still sees a human who is not exempt from our hypocritical nature. Loved the video though!

Bwt Indago is another color of blue like you said, but blue is the color of water like tears. and the lemon juice is for putting lemon juice in your eyes to make you cry... Love you Veds keep posting.

I always think of a private investigator watching a pothead lawyer in the middle of a bs trial trying to "prove" false guilt with dirty hands. "Do not look down by meshuggah is a good one " so is "corridor of chameleon "

That is exactly right. You got the song's meaning pinpoint accurate. Great job picking it apart.

Wow. You guys did an excellent job dissecting the lyrics. I know many ppl who never understood the alternative meaning and only thought it was about marijuana laws in the 90’s.

To be fair I think you need to revisit Tool music or at least give the band a few more tries to see what they are made of. I’ve listened to Tool for years and every time I go back to listen to them it’s like I’m discovering something new. Now I think I understand why people say Tool is their own genre.
