Great comment Jim and it's so true and I love all of those artists. I would just like to add one, Roy Orbison. I was out on a date with the sister of my friends girl friend. My friend drove about 15 miles to their house and then we separated. Later my friend picked me up in his car and told me that his girl friend told him, that she was dating his brother and she didn't want to see him anymore. We got on the road and there was a freezing rain storm and the roads were very slippery. Then Roy Orbison came on the radio singing the classic song ITS OVER and with my friend driving 50mph on frozen Michigan roads, because he was heart broken, I thought that it really was OVER ! luckily we made it home only spinning out a couple of times, but not hitting anything. I will always remember THAT NIGHT and THAT SONG. I'm 74 now and still remember all those good songs, but Especially Roy Orbison's ITS OVER !

@@MThyne-oz2zu Agree it's about home. There is something special about Merseyside in the 60's but it captures something for us all. And as another sweet beautiful tune puts it, Home Is Where The Heart Is (Elvis Presley)...

@@deborahshah9536 Well said. The Mersey beat period was something special. But this song, and I don't know why, always moves my bladder closer to my eye :). Someday I'll make it to Liverpool and Manchester. See The Cavern and the old location of the Hacienda in the same trip. Take care!

MY God The 60's were rough in the states, with all the death and destruction, but somehow, the brits gave us these beautiful sounds, which carried into the 70's, thanks to the people of Britain, for your music and friendship!...long may the union Jack Wave!
@inkey211 жыл бұрын
yeah, the Brits really gave us a shot in the arm right when we needed it. The youth of the nation was in a coma after JFK died like a sullen blanket of grief. Also musically speaking, in the pop/rock genre we seemed to be getting stagnant. The Brits basically said to us "you Americans invented rock and roll, but we can push it to a level of freshness, art and excitment like you have never seen before" The Beatles and the Brit invasion, to me, was far more exciting than landing on the moon. The Beatles era was some of the best memories of my life
@tywilliamnash507810 жыл бұрын
I thoroughly enjoy the British Invasion, but I was glued to the television set watching the lunar landing module, so I beg to differ with you. Nothing is bigger or more historic than that. It consists of physical sciences and art form, plus its young America at it's very best! You can't beat it with a stick dude!

This song is a warm rush of nostalgia for me as it's one of the first songs I remember hearing as a boy.There is something about the sound and the chord structure that has taken on a dream like quality over the decades since I first heard it.The kind of song you dial in on your radio late at night coming in on a wave of static from some far off place.

I once heard Paul McCartney say he wished he had written that song. I understand why. The lyrics speak about accepting and loving one's life, and loving one's neighbor. But it does so in an understated way, which I believe makes it even more powerful. At the end where Gerry does the final, "Here I'll stay," the instrumental ending (with the great George Martin producing) is music that makes you visually think of a ship crossing the Mersey, doing what it is intended to do, and Gerry being at peace with his life. Since we all desire that, I think that's one reason the song continues to resonate so deeply.
