I finally understand what Wako is talking bout now after many years of watching him. They’re all good knives but when someone hunts as much as he does they’re all just “one deer knives” his advanced knives are the ones he considers “3 deer knives” and more… I remember when he called his black gunny elmax a “7 deer knife” because he was able to process 7 deers with it before needing to sharpen it. This guy is pretty amazing how even through a language barrier he’s able to stubbornly convey his knowledge and experience to us. Thanks Wako!

We still have some traditional style knife makers here, Toyokuni, Kanetsune or so on. Their fixed blade constriction is basically saber convex grind with a short tang fixed with a ring and a pin to the handle. Thanks.

Zero grind Scandi bevel seems the nicest for feathersticking. The original Temagami Handle is hand filling for bushcrafting. Temagami's carbon steel is decent. Helle's edge making is as stable as Mora and very keen out of the box. Mora Bushcraft is as nice. Zero grind convex geometry seems nicest for wood splitting. All Fallkniven knives have a flat micro bevel and don't take stropping unless you get rid of it. I think Bark River Bravo series knives are the best suited for the job. Thanks.

154CM is a very good stainless steel in my opinion. It is very tough and not chippy at all. VG10 is a bit softer than 154CM. They are middle class stainless steels. S30V is super durable but a bit chippy in my experience. S35VN is an innovated S30V and less chippy. Sandvik stainless steels are generally nice. Buck 420HC and SOG AUS8 are nice in cheaper side stainless steels. I think carbon steels are tougher and more durable for hard use than stainless steels in general. Thanks.

I didn't know Benchmade started taking customization for users. I visited the site and figured out the regular 551 configulation is still my preference. I like 154CM the best. N680 doesn't hold well. D2 and S30V is too hard and can chip in a small angle. I need drop point. Thanks.

I don't like the bolster of Fox River as well. It looks cold in winter. I am going to have 3V Gunny Hunter not so ahead. Its wider flat portion under the spine suggests me of its larger edge angle. Bark River often give us worries. Thanks.

Virtuovice - I have been watching your videos for the past two weeks and I must say you are inspiring. I love the research you have done on customizing your knives. Have you tried the Falkniven PHK or Jarl? I purchase a BR Bushcrafter last week based on your recommendation and wow I am impressed and will customize it like you have. I ordered the PHK and Jarl and TK2 from knivesshipfree but they are not yet arrived. I will use them in Wyoming for 4 - Antelope , maybe I see video in my future

I personally don't like a large angle. So I made an appropriate angle like 30 degrees to my Bushcrafter. I need the Bushcrafter because of its comfortable handle, its blade shape, and its 3V durability. I have no experience with PHK and Jari because they seem like having a large angle estimated from its bevel height and blade thickness. I like 3.5mm thick for my hunting purpose. Thanks.

We are forbidden to edc a knife by law. I was once relieved with a folder in my pocket. I killed a deer on the way back home. When I got to the deer I found I left my hunting belt and knives in my truck. But I found a folder in my pocket and did the job with it. We are allowed to carry a knife when we are still in the hunting field. But we need to check our body not to carry a knife before we drop by a convenience store on the way back home. Thanks.

I am not very sure but I remember ESEE4 was much thicker and heavier than RC3. I replaced its original short scales to the TKC semi custom long scales and it could be the reason for its heaviness. And I didn't like its blade height as you mention. And I didn't like the large angle of its primary bevel which was tougher to put a small angle secondary edge on than RC3. And I felt ESEE4 was long and used to choke up onto its ungenerous choil. The blade-handle ratio of ESEE4 is wrong IMO. Thanks.

I am a big fan of your knife videos and I have used your technique to great personal success with many of my own knives. I did have one question, however - you gave up the ESEE 4 for the RC 3, but retained the Becker BK 16. I have both the ESEE 4 and the BK 16 and the dimensions for both knives are almost identical with the exception of blade height and handle ergonomics and the choil on the ESEE 4. What differences did you note?

@Virtuovice, Hello I was hoping to find out when or if you are going to review the new Gunny hunter 3v? I want to buy one before all the good wood handle ones are gone but don't know if I should. I really want a Fox River 3V (got a mini salmon burl for my birthday) but I hate the bolster on the full size and I can't find a burl handle for sale on a not bolster handle. Please if you could advise me on if I should wait for a Fox River or buy the Gunny instead. Thanks very much

Wako-san: do you know what type of knife in japan was traditionally used for hunting tasks (before all of these modern machine mass produced folders/fixed blades)? I could not see it being very easy with a kiridashi (which really is the only traditional small japanese knife design i am familiar with).

Buck 420HC is a decent steel. Its edge holding seems almost the same as VG10 or 12C27. It does a single deer to the end perfectly when it has a proper angled convex secondary edge. Thanks.
