This video was taken 3 years ago when I didn't know what was great hunting knives. Great hunting knives must have great handle ergonomics, great bevel geometry, and appropriate blade length and belly line for the game size. So I recommend you Bark River Loveless Drop Point Hunter from its second production run. Its 1st production run has a large angle micro bevel 100% but its 2nd run doesn't have it whatsoever. The 2nd run has its logo stamp at a lower position and you can identify it. Thanks.

@dropclutch1 I get backstraps, inner thighs, and outer hips. In total 20 pounds from a deer. I get 2 deer a week, 60 deer a season. I am allowed and urged by the government to kill as many deer as possible to reduce the overpopulated deer. Even the army company did it using choppers but they killed just 3 deer first chance. Second chance they killed 20 deer. Anyway I get 1,200 pounds of venison a year. My family consume 300 pounds and the remains go to my friends and coworkers.

Thanks for the follow-up - I reviewed your other video on these models which included the Enzo trapper. I started think more to the Trapper or the TK2. Checked out a few other reviews on the trapper model and it looks like it can be purchased as a kit which is good as the handle can be worked in advance of assembly. I'm going to see if I find one of these in a kit form. Purpose for me is for hunting more than for a survival/bushcraft type knife. Thanks, Alan

@hypehype1982 Hi, Thanks. I wish I would have A2 for survival, however over 6 inches are illegal here. Yes, I have ever used S1 for hunting, and it was very good. However I have alrealy left it for the next knife. It was too big for Japanese deers, and I couldn't make it super sharp, I guess it was because of its edge geometry. I remember it had mid spine and swedge, and relatively strong convex edge for the survival tough chore. However I miss S1 honestly. If possible I want a black one next.

Say Heah Virtuovice, Yeah, I'm a retired Bird Hunter, No Deer, well anymore. So I strictly like to scout new area's and hikes with afternoon delights. So because I luv my 3V Rod Garcia Skookum Bush Tool, I got my Fallkniven H-1 which I feel is very ssimilar to my S. B. T. which I combined with my A-1 a lovely kit., Thanx for the review, Job we'll done. ,, .

@rc3mil Both are easy to sharpen. However Fallkniven VG-10 keeps its sharpness twice or 3 times longer than RAT1095 carbon steel in my experience.
@virtuovice
@virtuovice 13 жыл бұрын
@magemager0 The both are good but not great in my experience. The both have fairly deep edge angle commonly maybe for batoning wood. For hunting they can do fairly well. But for wood cutting they won't do very well. In that kind of knives I think Bark River rampless Gunny in A2 and black canvas micarta is great. Thanks.

@Buldgr I have no experience of 3G, but I hear from very reliable person who owns TK2 and TK4 in 3G steel that 3G stays sharp twice as long as VG-10 and is not very hard to sharpen. Maybe I will get TK2 in 3G soon, which is his recommendation. Surely it has great blade and handle shape, which seems very universal. You had better check the TK2 before your purchase. Thanks.

@kayak17 The F1 has a tiny problem on its factory edge, which is the micro V edge. You must grind it off with sandpapers at first, if you want to strop it on the compound loaded leather. Then it will perform very well both in bushcraft and in skinning. The ESEE3 is a good knife, but I don't find it any advantage to the F1. The wide blade height of the ESEE3 is a disadvantage in a fine wood work in my opinion. It's a good knife again, but not so good as the F1 by all means in my opinion. Thanks!

@torquefactory NL5's leather handle is beautifully finished but its surface is slicker than thermorum. And its oval shape of cross section is small and unstable in my hand. NL5's blade geometry is better than F1, and worse than TK2. I already left my H1. I love full height convex geometry best because it is the sharpest. TK2 is the sharpest, and F1 is the toughest. NL5 is between TK2 and F1, so toughness and sharpness is well balanced on it. If you love its handle, NL5 is a good knife. Thanks.

Fallkniven F1 is a genuine survival knife for cold Arctic weather. Its handle front end design is for no need to touch the cold blade in extremely low temperature. Its thick bevel geometry and its thick handle is for making firewood efficiently and for working as a prybar. Its micro flat bevel is for easy touchup with a ceramic stone. Its VG-10 steel is a second class steel like 12C27, kind of soft. As a real knife Fallkniven TK2 in 3G is much better than F1 in my opinion. Thank you for reading!

The bevel height is too low to the blade thickness to make 25 degree sharp angle on the Trapper. I estimate its angle is around 30 degrees which is not sharp enough for game dressing. It is just nice for wood splitting as a batoning wedge. Honestly speaking if you use the knife for game dressing, you had better go to Bark River. Their Fox River in A2 and their Classic Drop Point Hunter aka Loveless Drop Point Hunter are very nice. Fox for a large game, and Loveless for a small game. Thanks.

@ayokay123 The peacemaker is a very good knife with a super ergonomic handle and a very useful blade feature. But thinking of the universality, F1 is a better knife I think. Convex edge is much easier to sharpen than V edge in my experience. VG-10 is pretty good stainless steel. The blade width is just excellent. The edge curvature is very user friendly. The sheath is very compact and easy to carry. For these reasons and so, I prefer F1.

Great review!! Can you tell me the difference between a VG-10 blade and a 3G blade? Would it be worth getting the 3G?
@virtuovice
@virtuovice 11 жыл бұрын
Its 5 inch blade is too long for efficient power transfer and precise cutting. Its low bevel grind makes large edge angle like 30 degrees. The PHK is not my preference. Thanks.

How does Fallkniven compare to Bark River? From watching your videos it seems you prefer bark river bravo 1, 3v as the best knife in this size. Just curious to hear more of a comparison to a bravo and a f1, h1.
@virtuovice
@virtuovice 9 жыл бұрын
Big Brown I remember the handle of H1 is round in section and unstable in the hand, I sold it off some years ago. The handle of F1 is thin for bushcraft. VG-10 is a regular stainless steel and doesn't hold long. 3V holds 3 times longer than VG-10 for sure. No handles can defeat that of Bravo for powerful holding in my experience. If you need power from a knife, Bravo is the way to go. It has regular 3V, LT and 1.25 variations for bushcraft. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply brother, I've been a long time fan, but I have more questions. How does it sharpen compared to VG-10, I've used it and have been impressed on how easy it is to strop back without sharpening. In your experience, is 3v easier to strop and sharpen?
@virtuovice
@virtuovice 9 жыл бұрын
Big Brown Yes. 3V's current hardness is 59 generally. But it holds very long because of its CPM steel property. 3V doesn't go dull like VG-10 does after use. So its stropping is very easy like unnecessary. You should be amazed for it.

Thank you very much, I have one last question that only you can answer, What do you think of Japanese Super blue steel?
@virtuovice
@virtuovice 9 жыл бұрын
Big Brown Its hardness is 61 generally and it is relatively easy to take chips. Its impact resistance and lateral resistance are weak in my experience. It can be good for kitchen cutlery but won't be good for outdoor knives. 3V is very tough and semi-stainless. It is the outdoor super steel.

Great video. In your experience, do you believe the 3G steel to be worth the extra $100? Or is it a matter of personal preference and usage that determines whether 3G steel is better than vg10? I am relatively new to knives and would be using my knives more for multi-day bush crafting activities.

The ramp is ridiculously close to the handle and really annoying to stretch the thumb onto the spine in the most regular holding. It's there just for an aesthetic reason IMO. Thanks.

F1 in 3G seems to have the same fat geometry as VG-10 version. 3G is twice harder than VG-10 and twice durable. And it is as tough as VG-10. VG-10 is a soft steel and I can understand why F1 in VG-10 needs such a fat geometry. But I don't understand why F1 in 3G has the same geometry. It seems like their laziness. F1 in 3G should have as small angle as their TK2. You had better go to Bark River Aurora bushcraft knife in 3V. 3V is 5 times as durable as VG-10 and semi-stainless. Thanks.

@virtuovice
@virtuovice 10 жыл бұрын
F1 3G will have the same bevel geometry and edge angle as F1 VG10. So the choice depends only on our steel preference. 3G is a much harder powder steel and holds much longer than VG10. But the factory edge angle is the same between the two steels and their cutting performances will be the same. In my opinion F1 doesn't worth 3G because of its fat geometry and large edge angle. F1 is enough with VG10. I love TK2 3G which has thinner geometry than F1. Thanks.

KnivesShipFree will give you a free ramp removal service. You just need to add a comment that you need the ramp removed professionally by BRKT when you order the knife. Then KSF will send it to BRKT and after the modification they will ship it to you. It will take 3 or more weeks. It's much longer than before perhaps because many knife people need the ramp removed recently. Thanks.

In Japan many deer hunters do as I do. Our housing and private land is very small. We cannot do it in a city. We are allowed to do it in the field unless it is viewed from public. The carcasses go to bones and skin within a day by foxes, bears, crows, and eagles. We are allowed to kill the overpopulated deer limitlessly and get some ten deer annually for a single hunter in average. We have little hunting culture because we are fish eaters from very old days. There are many reasons. Thanks.
