The best example I've seen is from a European show that showcased singers performing each others songs or songs special to them, during which she performed The Phantom of the Opera. It's a small stage and the camera work is excellent, which shows the contortions and odd faces she uses to shape the sound in precisely the manner she wants it. I’m sure after all of you complained about it, maybe he even watched it fully through in his own time, I don’t know. But he’s the vocal coach and you’re not. It’s not like him pausing it would have effected the analysis of it. “Analyze while not singing”? Most people who react will often pause as to avoid copyright claims. You’re all just mad that he paused at a moment you’ve all seen over and over, and you didn’t get to comment “Floorgasm victim” on another video. He wasn’t watching this as a fan or like other reaction channels, to just watch it for new music. Breathe. There are tons of other channels for that and I’ve seen a LOT of others watch this specific performance and not pause your favorite part. You’re all acting like he did the worst thing in the world.

There are PLENTY of other videos/channels where people just sit and listen to the song. This is not one of them. Someone who is a *vocal coach* is not going to simply sit there and listen to the song beginning to end and say nothing regarding Floor’s vocals. Complain elsewhere, and/or go watch someone who isn’t a vocal coach. Simple as that. You’re making a mountain out of a molehill.

Rick Leblanc thing is, Dick, Sam is a TEACHER. He will take what he hears and use it to teach his audience how the singer is doing what they are doing, what they’re doing right, why they might have missed something and so on. If you want a straight reaction, go watch that. Sam teaches. He’s also incredibly nice about everything, even when there are mistakes (seriously, he reacted to the 10 worst idol auditions and was still lovely and saying nice things- though honest and helpful).

And I think it’s great to listen to Tarja’s songs as well- I love her straight opera voice, gives a very epic feel, where Floor’s angelic, clear as a bell voice sends shivers down my spine. Obviously, I’m not one to get into the whole competitive, who was better thing- they’re both amazing, and you should definitely give both a go! (Though I’ll be honest, the one between Tarja and Floor didn’t have the same wow factor, or talent, as far as I’m concerned. Holy cow. I just learned more about why Floor sounds so good in twenty minutes than in the whole of my life so far. Nightwish with Floor is my absolute favorite band because of the dynamism of her voice. I know few singers as dynamic, but Larkin Poe’s more vocal sister provides a pretty close approximation. Check out “We Intertwine.” Totally different style of music, but her vocal ability is equally sublime. IMO, anyway. I see David Draiman of Disturbed as an example of the “grabbing” you’re talking about, a maneuver that changes the sound of the voice.

Floor Jansen is a beast. I'd love to see you do a comparison video between her and Tarja Turunen doing the same Nightwish song. I think the difference between how they each approach the same lines would be really interesting to evaluate. I recently unlocked my head voice, and when I did I found I was able to bring it pretty low into my chest voice range. What you said at the end about mix made a lot of sense to me, and it made a lot of what I've been doing make sense. I was singing at karaoke on Sunday, and I managed to take an extended note that began in my chest and as it was still being sung I opened things up and got my head voice in there, and I don't think anyone noticed I was doing it. So that was cool. I'd call my chest voice mature and my head voice juvenile to adolescent, but practice makes progress.

As some one who listens to Nightwish I recognize that this is Floor Jansen(As do, I see, many fellow commenting watchers ^-^), but when the band originally recorded the song it was with Tajra Turunen. If I recall from an interview Floor doesn't actually enjoy singing (learning?) the classical style. I'd have loved to hear your thoughts on how the song has changed (or not changed) between the different vocalists of Nightwish, but Ghost Love Score is indeed quite a song to tackle, never mind doing it multiple times for the sake of analysis. Her growly voice sounds like a weak male singer.
@thebreatho5 жыл бұрын
I think growling is her lowest point. It's a good tool to have and mix here and there within her performance. But she loses the ability to hit notes and maintain a Melody when she growls (refer to her performance of Disdain with ReVamp). She's amazing though, and probably the best (or at least the most complete) female rock/metal vocalist right now.

I would live to see you react to someone older, like Judy Garland or Ruth Etting. It's such a different style to today that it would be fun to know how a vocal coach hears it.

The way one video from one man named Sam Johnson reacting to my favourite band lead by my favourite singer shifts the entire direction of my day leaves me baffled. Seeing you be so engaged about the analysis was so refreshing.

She's impressive, but I like also that she always chooses the style that benefit the song. She has taken so many older Nightwish songs to the next level by doing this. Thank you Sam for this analysis!

SAM!! This video made me soooo happy! I was having a terrible morning and then you popped into my feed with one of my favourite songs from one of my favourite artists and made everything better! Floor has such a wonderful instrument and I really enjoyed watching you experience her properly and give me more of an insight as to how she does what she does. I hope you have an amazing day! 😍

Sam low-key displaying that awesome KZbin button over there, yeah!!! :D Like the new framing of the shot, also love that you're closer to your mic so the sound is cleaner. Might I make a suggestion though? (And you know I love your videos! This is just, hopefully, helpful critique) I'm not really an audio person (I'm a video editor) so I'm not quite sure what's causing this, but either your audio is clipping because the record level is too high or there's over-compression happening, either way, your audio's a little distorted in this video. Maybe drop the record level a bit when you're sitting closer like this? Also, a pop shield wouldn't be a bad idea for when you're talking facing your screen and speaking directly into the mic. That's my unsolicited comment for the day ;) (And it's possible you already noticed all this when you were editing!) Great video, you went into loads of detail! Thanks, Sam!

Excellent analysis! I've mostly seen reactions to this song, with only some light analysis/commentary on her technique and such. You being so thorough was an interesting take! Now, I'd be lying if I said I didn't want you to react to more Nightwish because please please do! Basically any song from this performance (Wacken Open Air 2013) would be a great candidate but especially Romanticide, Ever Dream, and Song of Myself. Also, Poet and the Pendulum from Wembly 2015 is amazing. And Greatest Show on Earth from Tampere... I have a feeling everyone will be politely requesting these songs once the Nightwish fans drop in en mass... :) Still though, please do more. I love the way you break it down and explain what's happening to a mere mortal such as myself. =D

@@Zayne simard moore Well I still recall the Puccini aria to a crowd of metal heads O Mio Babbino Caro, live @ MFVF 8 (kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpSuo4amdt2VpKc) and her voice, control and range has only gotten better since then!!! You must of heard her and Simone do Sancta Terra (feat Floor Jansen) Live Retrospect Show (kzbin.info/www/bejne/mamVY4yrn5ehsMk). Most of these Dutch goddesses are friends despite the different bands they lead. I love Simone but I still think Floor has an ability to do more with different songs (IMHO).
@jimmyboy1315 жыл бұрын
To my untrained ears, she has improved noticeably since the After Forever days. So if you want Floor at her best, it's from around 2010 and onward.
@matthewarms37865 жыл бұрын
She's definitely refined her technique and become far more consistent and versatile over time, but there are some of the flashes from the first couple of After Forever albums that are still eargasmic. That nearly 10 second F she does at the end of Monolith of Doubt was incredible for someone that was 20 at the time, although the live execution could be hit and miss in that era.

Hi Sam! I lost you for a while and I'm glad I found you again. I don't know why YT's algorirhm doesn't show your videos as much as in the past. I don't know if you'd reply to me after 4 years, but you are the perfect vocal coach to ask this I think (and I'm so glad you did this song anyhow). I am trying to sing this song and while I know everything will improve with practice (I have experienced this, I somewhat know my voice, though more intuitively than anything), but there's a certain point that puzzles me (and I don't know how long it will take for it, if ever, to resolve): When (at about 4:52) she goes from opera style/dramatic singing to more contemporary/subtle (and then does a long fading vibrato on that). Phrase 'into the blue memory' - the 'memory' part and actually I think just the last vowel. When I try to change the styles seamlessly in just one vowel as she does at that point, my voice cracks (I am female btw - saying that because my username does not indicate it). That almost never happens to me (if my voice is not tired or injured). I change the shape of my mouth of course, bring the sound more forward and make it softer... (It's as if those two sound producing techniques can't connect to each other.) How does she do that? Is it actually difficult/more obscure technique or do I lack something? Thank you so much!!

You do not have to react to what you are hearing immediately pausing the song to all kinds of inopportune moments. Listen, allow for the song to develop, pick a moment of natural low, then pause and say your piece. Then rewind a few seconds back for continuity and restart. Rinse and repeat. Know you audience...the majority are here to see your reaction to the queen and then hear your analysis.

Hi there! I just wanna say that I just love your channel. The way you explain how the breathing and essentially, the posture of your body affects your voice; it's absolutely clear. Like, you explain all the technic in such an easy and understandable way that allows people like me who's got no idea about all the singing techniques, to actually understand what's going when someone is singing. I love your videos specially the ones where you react too metal voices because it just fascinates me how different ways a person is capable of singing by just applying different techniques. I love your channel so much is not even funny. And I think channels like yours really help comprehend more about music and singing in general. There's this band that I recently discovered and I just enjoy the sound of the singer so much; that I think it'd be great if you could react to one of their videos. I have so many questions about the way this woman sings; because I've never heard a girl singing this way and you'll get what I mean once you check out their videos. The band I'm talking about is Blackbriar. There are studio versions in their channel but I'm particularly interested in the song 'Cry of a Banshee' the acoustic version, so if you could talk about that band in one of your videos I'd really appreciated. I wish you a lot of success with your channel and keep up the good work. I also wanna say that I just love how emphatic you are when it comes to the comments you make about the singers in your videos, like you never judge nor say that what they're doing is wrong. You just explain what they're doing and give tips on how to make sure their voices don't get hurt in the process and I really like that. I’ll leave the link of the song I just mentioned right here so it’s just easier to find it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2bacqh3j7N6bdE And again; good luck with your channel and I hope you keep making amazing educational videos.

@@spritestuff A commerial pop filter (a.k.a. pop screen) will look a lot better on video, though. If you want to go cheap, just put the mic a bit on the side. As long as the air from your mounth doesnt' directly hit the mic you'll be fine. And for speech only, speaking off the mic would be much better option than recording all the plosives like this. The moments where Sam looks directly at the camera have no problems with popping plosives.

I've always loved the way how you actually explain what happens. These cheap copycats who came after you are "vocal coach reacts" and they just react - and there is nothing interesting in watching what someone expresses on their face while watching a video. Keep on doing the good work!
