Austin has a musical theater background. He was part of the cast on a cruise ship when Home Free boarded as guest performers and they quickly made friends, Austin expressing his love for their music and his want to join them. When a HF member decided to retire to raise a family not long after that they contacted Austin to get them back to five members. A joke they relate is that he had to bring back the Georgia accent he's had to bury for his stage work. He sounds beautiful either way.

The fact that Austin has a musical theatre background does not mean that he has to sing in that style. The musical theatre style of singing sounds artificial and unusual to people who are not familiar with it. When singing in a studio type setting, with close microphones, and post production, singing in a more pop style is, IMO, likely to be more relatable to his intended audience. Indeed, I would say this performance has substantially more emotional impact for me when compared to more traditionally styled performances. It is very much "as you have never heard it before", and is the better for it!
@nightthornkvala941322 жыл бұрын
@@Back2SquareOne I was referring to it only in the aspect that you don't hear the "south" in his voice when he's singing that song. Tim was kind of teasing him about that when he was singing on the cruises.

Same- the movie version of the song was good, but it wasn't as good as it could have been because it was sung too strongly at the beginning. It should have started off gentle/falsetto (like it does in the Broadway version), and then grown through the song to demonstrate the "growing" need for Marius to live. Just my opinion 🙂

Hello Tara. I watched your reaction and analysis of David Draymond's version of Sound of Silence. You pointed out his choice to hold the consonant at the end of a phrase, just as Austin did in this video. That sort of observation is what makes professional music reactors so fun to watch. You point things out to me that may have been the reason I liked something, but that I did not notice on a conscious level because I didn't have the technical knowledge needed to put it in to context. Once you have pointed something like that out, I find that I do notice those things in performances that I hear later on.

I saw and heard Mark McKerracher completely destroy this song playing Valjean ON BROADWAY when I was on a field trip to New York with our little high school Madrigal choir from Central Texas (but HE, unlike Austin, was a bari-tenor, and this song had SO MUCH MORE WEIGHT in the lower register than Austin here -- truly an impressive, moving performance). Lea Salonga played Eponine. My best friend got Salonga's autograph on his Playbill when we all waited for the cast to come out of the backstage exit. Somewhere I have a picture of it. I think we were maybe 8 rows from the stage. It was the BEST of times. On a side note, I ruined my Pearl Jam "TEN" cassette tape in my little $9 Walkman knockoff from Walmart from playing it SO MUCH during this field trip. We were also 5th row for Phantom of the Opera on the same trip. The stage was SO MUCH SMALLER than the Les Mis stage... but we still absolutely adored it, even though it wasn't Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. It was Mark Jacoby as the Phantom and someone else (I don't know) as Christine. Somewhere I have that Playbill with Mark Jacoby's autograph. Did I mention it was the best of times?

@@gailseatonhumbert It's all very subjective of course. The thing is, although I stand by what I said, I still prefer listening to Mitch or Avi or Pentatonix in general.
