I love that over 30 years later we’re still talking about the gift that was Mariah’s voice in the early 90’s.

Her early years were so signature for her pure and thicker vocals. She wasn't doing a lot yet but it didn't lack the meat and potatoes. A flat foot singer with soul and intelligence. She knew what her voice can do in the moment. She studied gospel/blues notes and scales very well without too much aggression. Her growls and squalls came in for color, not for presentation.

Mariah had much more of a classical technique when she first started. I always thought her voice started quite dark but by the Daydream era we were in the signature golden honey Mariah timbre.

Hmm! What would you mean by classical?
@fagittarius5557 ай бұрын
@@oneilgerald her mother Patricia was an opera singer and Mariah grew up listening to her mother vocalise. Her technique just seems classical to me, open throat, raise soft palate, high cheek bones. My voice teacher used to always say “make the mold, pour the gold”. Her breath control, vibrato & vowel manipulation- the bel canto way of singing is central to Mariah’s voice yet she’s used those tools to break every rule possible in that book. True virtuoso. I wonder what Mariah’s IQ is, she is a genius musician either way.

That's her natural voice: dark and lower. The girlie tone of the Daydream era was artificially done. And I don't hear any classical trait in her approach tbh.
@joshuavidad60257 ай бұрын
@@TalvanePorfirio While I agree with her having no any classical trait, it is because she was actually never trained or had gotten any classical training. Even though her mother as an opera vocalist have never really trained her but just the basics like hums and warmups etc. Her "dark" and much thickness she had in her earlier years esp in her debut was because it was only around after she stopped her habit of smoking. Technique-wise, she was doing tongue retraction just like how Whitney's belts to darken timbre, and she barely does mixed voice. Her voice has been, through the years, have been gaining obviously gaining "lighter" due to her approaching more on doing mixed voice that's why her high belts/upper range was more consistent and grounded which was very apparent during Music Box and she just kept improving having her habit of squeezing, tongue retraction, depressed larynx, etc. away because she was actually getting vocal coaching since 1992 . Her voice has always been bright and light, and of course, her nodules that made her voice very inconsistent.

Great video! Her voice here is definitely brighter than after Emancipation, but she actually had a darker tone in the beginning than a couple years later during Merry Christmas and Daydream, and she used a way chestier mix here. Very interested to see what you think of her changes in tone, besides differences in quality. Its not just her mix, everything about the instrument became lighter. It became heavier again during Butterfly but then immediately lighter again during Charmbracelet. Nobodies voice changed so many times, so drastically, so fast, and not just in a linear direction, which is the strangest thing, but also a reason I love her

As technical and impressive as runs can be, it’s just as tough if not tougher to hit a note straight on and sustain it with resonance, vibrato, and control. When I’m singing and having an off day, it’s easier to do a run up to or down from to hit a note I’m going for as opposed to holding a note that might cause strain or just completely go off key or worst not hit the note at all. 😅

Patti Labelle, Natalie Cole, Lisa Fischer, Luther Vandross, and others were there as well. Mariah specifically mentioned Aretha, Patti, and Barbara being there and her being nervous singing in front of them

Yeah she mentioned on something I watched that she is in the mid range but she takes her voice up there past her true range.. and that’s what makes her a miracle. But could be why she damaged her voice as well in the long run which is unfortunate. Her high note is still in tact which is odd lol
@plaguedoctor2k7 ай бұрын
😅 her voice was actually quite dark during her debut years. It got the most light and girly in 1994-1996. And then after 1997 she devolved that rasp.

Mariah from the 2000s use a lot of that breathy whispery voice which I love but in 90s she sings in a more neutral voice and I think she should sing more like that

You should watch her tribute to Stevie wonder. She sings it all in the lower register. Mariah says she attributes her low part of her voice to when she started smoking in her early teens. She actually lost her voice for a little while and prayed to God that if she quit smoking, he would give her back her voice. A lot of people have suggested that Mariah could be an alto who’s learned to sing higher or a coloratura.

She always had a husky voice even as a kid she was never a natural soprano she just learned to mimic everything soo well and developed an incredible range

@@strangerthings88I think she's a colorutura soprano, but the nodules have hindered the vocal chords closure & give her the smoky timbre (& easy access to the whistle). Her vocal colour, agility & support blossom beyond Eb5, which separates a mezzo from a soprano, with ease to access those F#5 belts. She once did sing at C#6 sustained head voice with vibrato, although it lacked full connection. A true mezzo would be someone like Barbara Streisand & Beyoncé. Ms Streisand could & still can belt up to G5 & B5 without dropping support because she's got supreme techniques, not naturally being a soprano. A contralto would be someone like Toni Braxton whose speaking voice is brighter than expected.

@@Royal-Rover she’s not a soprano period. She’s said it herself multiple times. Singing technique has nothing to do with where your voice sits and all these opera terms to describe pop and rnb singers is really pointless. Mariah’s mother isn’t a high soprano either and her father had a deep voice. A lot of her ability to access a higher ease is sinus cavities behind her face and forehead which helps with residence. Same reason Barbra said she never got a nose job. Mariah has supreme technique as well especially in her earlier years while still working around nodules.

@@strangerthings88 Just because she has said it doesn't mean she isn't. Like you mentioned, she is never aware of those operatic technical terms, nor does she care about those rules. Besides, techniques DO extend your range, but doesn't determine your voice type. A true mezzo has the weight up to Eb5 which she doesn't. Mariah Carey was NOT nasal in those belts. She is in fact a chesty belter, often relying more on the chest than the head. Streisand is a mezzo with supreme techniques to reach the soprano range with far more support than most true pop sopranos. Patti LaBelle as a dramatic soprano is also often criticised to be very nasal in vocal placement. This is her technical or stylish choice, not because she is a mezzo trying to reach a soprano range with the sinus cavity. Céline Dion & Whitney Houston are also obvious examples. There's a thing called recessive genes. Just because your parents do not have such phenotypes doesn't mean they don't carry those recessive genes. I can name tons of operatic sopranos whose parents as vocalists ARE NOT sopranos. Read again my above comments. Those reasons are valid with evidence. In fact, there are some vocal analysis videos on YT discussing this issue. You may search for that.

@@Royal-Rover none of what you’re talking about has anything to do with what I said. Patti has an amazing range and power, but her voice isn’t really pleasing and has a grating tone to most people. Mariah isn’t nasally in any part of her voice…I said RESONANCE. No one’s talking about recessive genes here you can literally hear it in her speaking voice and she can sing as low as Toni Braxton easily. Aside from nodules that’s why she doesn’t have the greatest head voice. Secondly she might not like using technical terms, but she certainly knows them growing up with her vocal coach opera singing mother. How much dumber can you get saying “just because she said it doesn’t mean she isn’t” then point to strangers analyzing her voice on KZbin as if they know it better than herself lmfao 🙄. Where did I say technique doesn’t extend your range? At least learn some reading comprehension skills before replying with 6 paragraph comments just because you like seeing yourself type.
