Her rendition is emotionally insane due to SO MANY things that was happening at that time and due to her intelligent vocals arrangements. At 8:17 she breaks down into this softer and dreamy sound just right before the big, monumental vocals of the Climax. At 11:14 listen how she dramatically goes down in her range ( using big and tall voyelles ), teasing us with a little smile to tell the audience that something EPIC and SPECIAL is coming. At 11:23 is where the STORM of The *GREATEST SINGER OF ALL TIME* arrives it’s so BIG and POWERFUL that her eyes are pointed to the sky and closed. It’s like she’s singing for god. 13:25 Listen how dramatic it sound.

The entire time you were talking, I was smiling. I listen to her sing this often. It is the whole experience for me of Desert Storm, the written preface before the performance, of how they introduce the musical director and Whitney and her in a jogging suit, and the soldier saluting. It's truly remarkable. Now, I've heard the timing of the musicians was 4/4 instead of 3/4 that it usually is, whatever that means. All these decades later and I've never heard it sung more beautifully.

This version is without question the greatest ever. Period. It's been a little over thirty years, and not even the opera singer Renee Fleming could come close to her majestic power and feeling. The song entered the Billboard 100 TWICE, once in the top twenty and the other I believe in the top ten. Who has ever accomplished that?

This stands as a testament to all African Americans who built the United States of America with blood, sweat, and tears, and even their lives, and yet were denied their place at the table - even to the extent of being ignored for their commitments to U.S. war efforts throughout hundreds of years. Whitney Houston clarifies that the national anthem was earned in part by the U.S.'s black population.

Not a vocal coach or singer but I love how she brings the sound lower for “gleaming” and then literally brings a raise in volume and pitch or crescendo to produce vocal fireworks when singing rockets red glare and bombs bursting in air, so that you can feel the excitement.

Loved loved loved this talk through! Also wanted to chime in on your comment about the orchestra’s arrangement! They did a wonderful job at being one with her and giving her space to sing…. but she’s so talented that her entire delivery was effortless because she sounded like she was one with them! I don’t know that I could sing like that in an open echoy environment and sing in sync with a full blown orchestra the way she managed to do so! Great talk through!

it’s both an understatement, and can’t be stated enough how ICONIC this performance is. rickey minor’s stellar arrangement, and her perfect vocal (which if i recall correctly from an interview with rickey, she recorded in ONE TAKE.) a LOT of credit for whitney’s incredible vocal discernment has to go to cissy houston. i think she taught her (obviously) about the freedom of good old gospel singing, but also the discipline of melody and tone and placement. she’s really the unsung hero and a huge part of why whitney was (is still) the standard bearer & the voice.

I don’t know if she is the first to take it up, however, as an instrumentalist that has played it a million times I know most arrangements have the option to play up to the Bb for the first trumpet. Not sure if she adopted that or it was suggested for her to do it. I do know that before they recorded it she didn’t have a chance to practice it. She did a listen one time and this is what you got. Thank you Whitney!

Her entire arrangement was new. Apparently the NFL thought it was too much/bold/different but wiser minds prevailed. One could build skyscrapers based on this performance. As far as skin-color paranoia, aka "wacism", is concerned, Marvin Gaye's version in 1983 at the NBA All-Star game was the most controversial since Hendrix in '69. But none of these compared in terms of controversy and backlash to Elvis when he first hit the scene.

Actually it’s not technically a lip sync, her mic was off. The people standing next to her heard her singing but they played her recorded version because the NFL and the producers thought that there’d be way too many technical issues and they wanted it to be “perfect “. At any rate, Whitney’s version is the gold standard (even now 30 years later), Whitney’s version is the only one that made it on the billboard charts TWICE. And just because she’s such a kind, generous beautiful woman, Whitney donated every cent of the money from the sales of the 2nd release of her single to the families and victims 9/11.
