Cesar's puppy dog eyes and emotional voice had me in tears. So often what we see in ourselves is fueled by fears and insecurities and the mirror just added to the feel of that. Eli did a beautiful job on this.

Cesar is freakin’ LETHAL when those eyes come into play. The epic side eye on In The Air Tonight could have dropped flies in mid flight. And when they go all sad, I just want to find the person that made them look that way and do some harm.

Looking at this again and wishing someone - maybe you? - would interview Eli. I would be fascinated to hear him talk about arranging, whether he'll do more of it, and of course about his incredible eye for lighting and backdrops. He's not a founding member the way Layne and Geoff are, but his skills and contributions are strong and he HAS been part of the group since 2010. I suspect he'd have some very interesting insights.

RE: "A Jen of All Trades", this was a fantastic 'Chat'!! I was fascinated and had no problem watching the whole hour & a half conversation!! You are indeed a 'Jen of all trades'. I'm glad to hear that you are leaving the door open to musical theater. I'm also glad to hear that you try your best to find the balance between all the areas of your life: teaching/coaching, R&As, wedding/ band gigs, covers/album, and personal time!! I'm thankful Peter Barber took the time out of his busy schedule to chat with you and make it available to subscribers/viewers! 😊👍👍👏👏👏👏

@@JenniferGlatzhofer Eli arranged it for five voices, and then Earl left. They decided not to bring anyone in, to honor Earl in a way, so Eli sang both of the tenor parts. Yes Eli's arrangement, the mirrors though were Geoff's idea. Genius, as always. I don't know about anyone else but when anthony starts singing in this I just tear up. I can feel the depth of emotion in his voice. Those notes coming in behind Geoff's "body" if you see what I mean. Incredible. I don't know if you have heard Eli's arrangement of Eleanor Rigby. I think it might have been his first with VP and it's so unusual.

This was absolutely outstanding, in so many ways. But the extended nonresolution on “run” and the combination of chord movement and resolution is a work of art. It’s a simple process - so simple that we often do not think about or give it much consideration when we do. But when an artist DOES consider it, and works through how it can be managed and shaped as was done here, it becomes a thing of beauty.

And I was expecting your beautiful reaction and amazing analysis and imitation of almost every note of each member of the group since clip was out. I know Geoff's notes are difficult to imitate though. As a bass, even I have difficulty to sing them as perfect as Geoff (of course) 😅 I can't finish without implying the deep emotion in Cesar's voice, Anthony's bitterness(meaning hurtfulness of soul) and of course Eli's rocky greatness. Layne gives a great background as beatboxing with Geoff. I can't praise these gentlemen enough whatever I say. Thank you so much guys. And thank you dear Jen ❤

Voiceplay has transcended to the next level. Home Free, Pentatonix, and Voctave are very talented and are great. However, VP can do any genre, and make it their own. They have the ability to convey the message like no one else. It’s not just the vocal talent, it’s the delivery…. An no one is in their league when it comes to that.

I completely concur. I have heard the vast majority of the songs they have covered countless times. And they never really touched me the way they do after VoicePlay does a cover. One, I can hear the lyrics more clearly. (I have trouble processing things in an auditory way.) But their videos are so compelling that between the musicality, the lyrics being clearly heard, and the visual presentation, I finally feel like I understand what the writer was trying to accomplish.

I don't know how you do it. I had to listen to this a good 50 times before I could stop choking up with tears and analyze the technicalities. What makes the song naturally so sad (even before Cesar tears up and we all start bawling) are the chords. It's a I-III#-IV-iv chord progression, pretty much now known as the "Creep progression." The first 3 chords are major, and only the minor 4th as the last chord actually tells us "hey, this is sad." So why is it we feel our heartstrings tugging right away? It starts with that III# chord. Musically, we expect to go from the tonic to a B minor chord (iii) but the D is made sharp, and that changes it to B major (III♯). That sharp comes unexpectedly -- we're expecting sad, and instead we get... like a STRUGGLE to be happy, and it puts us ill-at-ease. It creates a sense of yearning, either to be happy or be sad! Our ears now expect the song to move up to the Major 5th and be TRULY happy, like we've heard in music before, but instead we shift up only a chromatic step to the 4th. Our brains yell, "no no, I wanted more" and again the YEARNING is there. It's still a "happy" major chord, but it's not what we wanted. Even when we have what we want (like Geoff wanting a perfect body... let's face it, he does) it still feels like we're "not good enough." (He's gotten into his body image struggles in "I Love Me" but this time it feels so raw and intimate.) Just as we expect yet another major chord to resolve, we shift a chromatic step down to the minor 4th. Now that minor hits harder, more painfully, because all we expected up to now was subverted. We return to the tonic without either building nor resolving... just... existing! The slow wave of D-D#-E-Eb chromatically up and back down over and over and over again emulates how we feel like we can never rise to meet expectations, we're just buoying along the swells of an ocean so vast, we could drown and no one would notice. Emotionally, that's what makes "Creep" so impactful. The chords take you on this subconscious emotional journey, the words pierce you, and VoicePlay's vocals are salt in the wound.

Watching your reaction to this one, I recognized some techniques used in voiceplay's cover of 'We're Good', by Dua Lipa. Thought I'd go back and watch your review of that one, to find you hadn't done one. Shame. Some quite technical and simply beautiful singing going on in that cover. I posted on VP's thread on this one that I'd have preferred just the VP members in this one. No disrespect to Anthony, love his voice, but I'd rather have had his parts covered by Cesar and Eli on this one. Cesar's highly emotional singing really fits the song.

I think a better format for these videos would be to do a raw reaction at the start of the video, beginning to end with no pausing. After that, go back thru the video and break it down.
