Another theory; Arceus brought you to Hisui specifically to stop Volo. Volo's plans are obviously sinister. He's ''hunting'' Arceus, is willing to tear apart time and space to do it, but most importantly he is an incredibly strong trainer. Volo is the only one who can control 6 pokemon (not to mention Giratina), the only other trainer who even comes close is Kamado with 4 pokemon. Plus, throughout the story we are told again and again how our player is uniquely skilled and very proficient in battle. This leads me to belief that we are the only one there that can match up with Volo, which could imply that Arceus brought us there because no one else in Hisui could beat Volo.

I came to the same conclusion I also caught the word play Volo is a Pokemon Wielder not a trainer his Pokemon are weapons not partners imagine the kinds damage a wielder could of done to the timeline in the grand scheme of Pokemon "Training" had Arceus not plunked you to show the better path.

The thing I find most interesting about Volo is the lines he gives us explaining his reasoning. He implies he suffered many heardships and generally had a awfull live, which motivated him to learn about the old myths. Then there is the way he describes Giratina. "Arceu's discarded child." The way he talks about it, makes it seem like Volo is projecting on to Giratina in that moment. Which in turn makes me believe Volo probably was abandoned as a young child. Which could explain why Cogita and him don't know eachother, if he isn't a time traveler.

This is why I don't agree with the idea that he doesn't care about his Pokémon or that Togepi isn't the same one in the last battle. He wants to make a world without pain and suffering and the way he talks to Pokémon in the game seems genuine. There's also a photo of him with Togepi at the photography place. Why would he go take a picture with a Pokémon he doesn't care about? And he very well could have had a full team aside from Togepi and she was simply the last to evolve. After all the Togekiss has the same traits as the Togepi you fight earlier.

Theory: Ingo was recognized as a strong trainer by Arceus recognized Ingo as a strong trainer, so he was brought to stop Volo from causing chaos, but he was found in the Icelands by the Pearl clan, he then lived with them and became Sneasler's warden. Arceus realized its plan failed, so it sent the protagonist to stop Volo which eventually succeeded.

Volo's statement about capturing Arceus even if it takes centuries makes me wonder if he somehow survived into modern day Sinnoh. We know it's possible to extend someone's life indefinitely because of AZ, and Volo likely wouldn't have any moral issues with sacrificing pokémon to do so. With the player causing Giratina to have a change of heart, Volo wouldn't be able to convince them to open another Space-Time Rift. So maybe he saw an opportunity in Cyrus and subtly guided him, hoping that someone trying to unmake the world would be enough to draw Arceus out

That's what I was wondering. He said he'd wait centuries for finding Arceus and I do wonder if Volo could achieve immortality, making us encounter him later on. AZ found a way to live for thousands of years so its not crazy if Volo found his own way to achieve this. Someone suggested Volo digging up the machine or working with AZ but timelines don't add up. Your idea with Cyrus is a good idea. You do wonder how that guy knew so much which could've been a lot of research. But even then, it's not like there was much to go on. Who would have told him the red chain when only Cogita knew of it before?

I think you missed the point, it was a hyperbole statement that he’ll dedicate all his time to finally meet with Arceus. I’m sure Volo as character will change, what drove him insane was his hunger for knowledge, he even saids in the end what he should do about it. Probably the dev will make him interest in another thing he didn’t realize, just how he didn’t realize that Arceus responded to him which was sending the Player to oppose him.

@Chocolatierchick Unless he had kids before he went to Hisui, two thousand years ago in our time people had kids YOUNG, heck even a couple hundred years ago they had kids young, simply because the life spans were much shorter and people were considered adults much sooner. If the same holds true, even if Volo was only 19 or 20 in Legends, he could still have had his share of kids that went on to become the ancestors of Cogita and therefore Cynthia. Even if he were the same age as Akari / Rei, he could have had kids of his own but he's clearly older but point is still there. Of course that's if Toby's right and Volo does come from even further back in time then Hisui.

A lot of your questions are answered by Volo himself: He says he has the blood of the Sinnoh people. In other words, Volo’s ancestry dates back to the time before the Diamond and Pearl Clans, to the time when the Temple of Sinnoh was constructed. That’s how he knew about the Plates, how he was able to contact Giratina, how he knew Cogita, etc. It’s not that he came from the past. He learned of this stuff through folklore. Perhaps Volo’s ancestors moved away and became separated from Cogita’s though, hence why she seemingly doesn’t know him super well. Also, Volo did not use the distortion to come to PLA time. Instead, he opened this one up.

Actually Volo again gives us the answers himself: When explaining his reasoning Volo implies he had a very hard live growing up and then follows this up by calling Giratina "Arecu's discarded child" that's a odd choice of words. I'm pretty sure all of the games refered to pokemon as arceu's creations before that. I think Volo is projecting here. Volo is a orphan who was abandoned by at least one parent. He then got adopted by the Ginko guild and at one point learned about lady Cogita. Most likely due to Ginker, Cogita drops his name and seems to be at least somewhat familiar with him. I think she might be the one who suplies him with the "weird machines" I also think she might be connected to celebie, which is how both theories could even be tied in with eachother. Cogita does have the Pixie plate after all.

Cogita puts up a front of some kind, she keeps her cards closed whenever she interacts with people and generally isn't a easily trusting person. The cutting board incident was her purposefully railing Volo up and was one of the first incidences where we saw Volo's own mask slip. She clearly knew what the plate really was, why else would she have given it to us as a reward in the first place.

This pretty much covers everything. Volo is well aware of his bloodline and was the only character who knew Arceus. He is not a time traveler, but a person who spend most of his time studying the ruins. He got lost in his way of research and his hunger for knowledge drove him for bad decision.

There are I'm afraid some big holes in the details of this theory though, some I noticed: 1. If Volo was literally one of the ancient Sinnoh people then why would he merely say their blood runs in his veins? That's the kind of phrasing used when such people are your ancestors. 2. If Volo lived back then why is he so intent on being able to meet Arceus? Having never seen it is clearly a major motivation for him. Yet the ancient Sinnoh people did apparently meet Arceus, it's image is even on that ancient temple before it is destroyed. Not to mention the Ancient Hero battled against Arceus. Yet Volo says he had to do a great deal of research before he became convinced Arceus even really existed. He also makes it clear he learned most of what he knows by researching ancient ruins, listening to stories from Cogita, etc. A lot of this he wouldn't need to research if he lived back in those ancient times, they would be things he could readily already know. He wouldn't need to learn to read the heiroglyphs about the ancient hero's journey. 3. The "Hero's Verses" are called only the "Old Verses" to my knowledge, and were most likely written by Cogita. Doesn't change much but I noticed you kept calling them Hero's Verses. Also I don't recall any indication the hero fought Giratina, the hero's claim to fame was fighting Arceus. 4. 11:23 She specifically refers to the shadows being seen on Firespit Island, not the Cobalt Coastlands in general. We are also told a surveyor was attacked by a ghost there. Given the Missfortune Sisters were hiding out on the island, it seems most likely that the "ghost" people saw was Charm's Gengar, and the shadows were simply the bandit sisters trying to hide. 5. I'm not getting the reasoning for Volo somehow convincing Giratina to rebel back in the days of the Celestica people. You state it as being the reason Giratina was banished, but Volo specifically says that Giratina already wanted to fight Arceus when he first sought the creature out, and the reason it wanted to challenge Arceus was out of anger over being banished. The order of events just don't line up right for your theory to work. In other words the violence that led to Giratina's banishment and its resentment happened before it met Volo.

The impression I got from Volo was that he felt rejected by Arceus and as such, then turned towards Giratina in a "enemy of my enemy is my friend" kind of way, and Giratina went along with it because it got an ally against Arceus. It didn't seem like he provoked Giratina, but rather joined the cause since they both despised Arceus.

most points i agree but 4 doesnt add up as much its likely the sisters didnt move tot he coastlands until after we beat them up in the mirelands and stuff like arcenine dying and there being probablems seems to be a longer issue not somethignt hat happend like 2 days ago. So its likely its giratina who lives around there and it becoming more restless. It still doesnt mean much since thats where giratina tends to life when he isnt stuck on the other side

Giratina's never been associated with causing high waves or storms, it makes more sense to me that what happened was a random tragedy.

Regarding point 4 and the shadows. I dont remember thr exact wordings ingame. But I kept having to think of th Dusklops we catch, that spooked the warden ans was later necessary to make Basculegions food. Dusklops has def been around for a while, making the Warden too uncomfortable to go there. And possibly has been used for a while to make the food. Basculegion is also another ghost, as is the beach filled with ghosts towards the night. The cobald coastland as is already has alot of ghostly presense. The shadows they mention that were seen around firespit didn't remind me of Giratina at the time. And we later see the storms from Thunderus, which I see no reason why they couldn't have been roaming around beforehand just aa much. So this "scary omen of storms and shadows" mightve even been a mix of Thunderus' doings and the many ghosts that call the coastlands their home. Tho just some quick ideas. I would have to read the text around the Lord again

So here’s a thought… what if Volo is actually a descendant of Cynthia, and Cogita is the true ancestor to Cynthia and thus Volo as well? Him being from the past is likewise interesting, but this could very well be a case similar to Eobard Thawn from the Flash series/comics. Lots of time shenanigans.

The only counterargument I can think of is the presence of Hisuian Arcanine on his team. If he really does come from even further in the future than the player, then it really should be a regular, Kantonian Arcanine, as I find it hard to believe that he'd just happen to own a surviving member of an extinct species-the likes of which have never resurfaced anywhere else. And I don't think it would be very wise of him to time-travel without any Pokémon by his side, only to catch and train up a whole new team from scratch. But then that team of his has also mastered the lost art of the Strong and Agile styles, so... Hmm...

@@ShycoWar I agree, it would’ve been quite eery if he had a Kantonian Arcanine. But then again, all of his Pokémon are in these new Hisuian pokeballs anyway, which means if he did have a team of Pokémon with him, they either had to make the jump to the future with him (if he came from the past) or would’ve been contained in more modern balls first (if he came from the future). Then again, it’s very possible he released them and re-caught them with Hisuian balls in order to facilitate his disguise. Another interesting note is the player and Ingo both use pokeballs because they’re more comfortable with them. None of the clan members use pokeballs. And we don’t even see other members of the Ginko Guild with Pokémon. It’s very possible that both the ability to handle a team of six and using them in pokeballs is a sign of being from the future.

And if there was hisui fossil’s we should’ve been able to get them in the other games but nobody knew about the hisui forms in the games before this. He couldn’t have gotten fossils. And like I said, he has wielder in his name for a reason, literally nobody really has pokeballs so he couldn’t have traded since most wouldn’t know growlithe exists.

As interesting as the theory is, I feel like it doesn't quite add up - Volo never mentions getting to Giratina twice, only that he followed old myths of his people. If anything, I feel like he may have travelled to Hisui with the Ginkgo members, and have been a descendant of the original Celestica people who left. The other big thing is that Pokemon has used accents a lot in this game to demonstrate character backstories. Ingo uses a lot of train speak, Kamado uses galarian speak, especially when stressed, and Laventon obviously is galarian in his language. How does this apply to Volo? He uses completely "modern" speech normal of Hisui. Even when he reveals his twist, his speech never changes. So what about the other qualities? Well, tales of Giratina still existed, so he could have gotten them from his people, if he came with the Ginkgo, it would make sense that he doesn't know Cogita, and his outfit, well, I bet he actually got the Galaxy clothier lady to make it - after all, she can make more. He looks to me to be someone trying to mimic all of the past's behavior, while simply not knowing why they behaved in such a way. The Space-time rift is definitely from Giratina's last mishap, but it is never mentioned that anybody helped Giratina. In fact, Volo implies that he had to convince Giratina to try again. If Volo had been with Giratina the first time, I doubt convincing it again would work well. The biggest thing, though, is the speech. The game specifically calls out how multiple characters speak. Because Volo never reverts to an older accent, I doubt he ever had one (and thus, was not from that time)

While playing the post game, I got the feeling that Volo had done all of this before. Practically the minute you get up there, he explains everything he’s done in such a level way and seems to have no trouble owning up to it. It made me feel like he’s done this before. Like he’s gone through this multiple times, constantly cheating the system to come back and try again. Idk how he’d pull that off, I just got that vibe from him. After he loses, he admits defeat quite easily. Even after seeing you get the Azure Flute, he loses his composure and simply leaves instead of fighting you any longer. He swore he’d get his way, even if it took him centuries. It really felt like he really *could* wait centuries.

Fun mini theory, the statue in eterna city was built by the diamond and pearl clans. Since the city was built on the celestica ruins they likely would have needed to make some room for houses. And with the knowledge that their almighty sinoh was more than one pokemon they could have built the statue to celebrate their coming together and honor the past in some way by creating the almighty sinoh as if it was one pokemon.

yeah. to be exact, volo and cogita's names also come from philosophical phrases. cogita comes from descartes's famous "cogito ergo sum" (i think therefore i am), while volo comes from the counter phrase "volo ergo sum" (i wish therefore i am). similarly, although cynthia could also fit in the "i think therefore i am" philosophy, her name sounds like sentio, which is used in the phrase "sentio ergo sum" (i feel therefore i am)

I think he is a "time traveller" myself but more in the sense that he's an immortal, passing through time the long way, given that line at the conclusion of his story arc: "No matter how many years, how many decades, how many centuries it takes me!". I definitely agree that he's from the past around the time of the ancient Sinnoh people. My personal opinion is that he has become unhinged because of his immortality, and being an immortal cursed to wander the earth naturally you might want to have a word or two with God about it going through whatever means necessary. Immortality is an already established thing in the Pokemon universe a la AZ in X&Y. I would love for him to return in a future Pokemon game still alive after centuries, maybe with a redemption arc.

I actually disagree with this theory, mainly because it takes away a lot of Volo's accomplishments, if this theory was true then Volo didn't really hunt down every piece of information about ancient Hisui and the Legendary pokemon because in his time everyone knew. Personally I think that the first Distortion was caused by Giratina shaking of the chains of Arceus and striving for the first time to kill God himself with his bare hands while Volo in present day Hisui just gave Giratina a path back to our world and a strategy to eliminate Dialga and Palkia from the field of battle allowing him to attack Arceus freely as all of Arceus' allies are gone with the Noble Pokemon and the rest of the Creation Trio tearing the world apart in a frenzy.

I mostly agree, except that from what we know Giratina only developed its resentment toward Arceus and desire to challenge it after Arceus punished it for violence that must have been unrelated to attacking Arceus (a common theory being that Giratina was too violently zealous in how it tried to maintain balance in the world). Even then it simply wanted to challenge and potentially usurp Arceus, it's change of heart to wanting to protect Hisui with the protagonist (as well as the damage it did all having been Volo's idea) makes me doubtful it truly wanted to kill Arceus.

But if he did somehow travel in time maybe it was caused by Arceus to cause him to repent. But also seeing as he had giratina he could've somehow got trapped in the distortion world and if you think about it time often works different in stuff like that so he could very well spend as example 24 hours there and it pass 24 years outside if we put quantum realm logic on it. Its the world of Pokemon many different outcomes are highly possible. And none would be shocking.

Its a cool theory, but as a lot of holes. Why do Cogita and Volo look alike, but don't seem to be close/related? To start, they do clearly know one another. They're not strangers. I'd say they do come from the same bloodline. The Ancient Sinnoh people moved away, I speculate Volo himself (or his family) left as well. But Volo returns to seek out Arceus after the Hardship he endured. Perhaps his clan offshoot died, like what happened to Kamado's village. He joins the Ginko guild so he can explore the region/ruins - Being washed up on the coast, this can simply be his journey back to Sinnoh, or something to do with the hardship he mentions (Eg: Boat sinking). This would explain how he'd also know where to find Cogita, where his people come from. Holes in the theory -When were these poke'ball invented? how would he have these pokemon thousands of years ago if the technology didn't exist? He has the pre-evolutions of his final team, there is no reason to think they aren't one in the same. -Volo and Cogita do know one another. They've clearly met prior to the player being introduced to her. -Volo didn't convince Giratina to go against Arceus in the past. Volo himself states this, that Giratina already wanted too face Arceus when he come across him. What went down between the pokemon had already happened before Volo meets Giratina. -Volo, with Giratina, open the portal that is currently there in hopes of bringing Arceus forth. -Volo talks about how much research he had to do, including talking with Cogita. If he was from that time, this wouldn't make sense. Even Cogita mentions he ignores his duties in the Ginko guild to search ruins. -He states the bloodline runs through his veins, implying he's an ancestor. Not that he is one of the original Sinnoh People.

I do think he might have some sort of weird immortality factor since at the end of the battle, he states that he'll wait however long even decades or centuries. It’s possible Volo inspired Cyrus. Not mentioning Volo might have tried to keep the Giratina knowledge a secret. That would explain how Cyrus had no idea Giratina would try to stop him a century or two later. Giratina appears to be similar to Rayquaza in the sense that it’s purpose is to stop Dialga and Palkia if they get out of control (human influence or not) and since PLA shows Giratina was conquered by Volo, the Player was sent back because Archeus knew his creation failed. Volo is ether a time traveler, or figured out how to slow age to a minimum.

Just gonna debunk that bit about Volo escaping through the Space-Time Rift real quick: when you catch Giratina then talk to Laventon, he tells you that Volo returned and gave him the Greasious Stone before disappearing again. Therefore, he clearly didn't disappear through the rift. Sorry..

That's not what he meant. The theory was that Volo escaped through the first space-time rift when it opened in the past, not the one you close during the game. Volo is still in modern day Hisui after you catch Giratina, but that doesn't negate the possibility that he came from an earlier point in history.

As of Scarlet and Violet's 4 ruinous legendaries I think Volo used them to use the Crater and the time rifts to go to Hisui and try and capture the three gods of Sinnoh. This makes the third villain that has attempted this.

None of this requires Volo to be a time traveler. Cogita is supernatural, she states something to that effect and she suggests that Volo has been grilling her for information ever since they've met. In the Ancient Retreat, there's a Ginkgo Tree; The tree under which the descendents of the Ancient Hero and the Celestica swore to return to do their part. Volo purposefully beached himself in the Cobalt Coastlands as a reference to Ronald McDonald (himself half Scottish, half Chinese) doing to same, learning Japanese and the Ainu language. In the real world, this was done because Japan wouldn't allow foreigners in, so he fabricated the circumstances where he would have no choice but to become stranded until he would be escorted out again. Since then, the Ginkgo Guild must have gotten permission to move in with larger numbers, with western-style wagons that bear the Ginkgo leaves that tie them with a civilization long forgotten. By the way, there's a whole other civilization that this video kind of skips over. I'll be making my own video for that. Either way. This feels really contrived.

I personally don’t think Volo is a time traveler. I think that he was handed down the stories of his people in great detail so he had more of a basis to go off of and more interest. Idk about Cogita. She could be some distant relative or they aren’t related and eventually their descendants have relations. Time travel seems enourmously farfetched to me. The way I see it is that Volo and Cogita are just straightup immortal (or capable of just getting really damn old) My reasoning steams from two pieces of dialogue: The first is the one from Volo that you too covered. What leads me to thinking he is no time traveler is his wording. He says he will continue(!) trying for centuries, no matter how long it will take him, indicating he has an intent to actively try for centuries at a time, instead of wanting to do it in a few centuries. Second is dialogue of Cogita. Once you caught her "remarkable pink flying Pokemon" she says something along the lines of only borrowing it to the player, the Pokemon returning to her after the player dies (heavily implied that this death is caused by ageing; This is almost certainly not a threat.)

So in hindsight, Kamado leaping to the conclusion that the player caused the frenzies of the Noble Pokemon and kicking them out of the village is even worse because Volo was the one doing it, and he just stood back and let the player get thrown under the bus so he could pretend to be a hero and help them out, thus getting closer to his own goals.

Pokémon Legends Arceus most likely takes place in the early Meiji era of Japan which started in the mid 1860s. During this time, the northern region of Hokkaido which Sinnoh/Hisui is based on was only inhabited by the indigenous Ainu people. I think the ancient people of Sinnoh are based on these people. I would say that PLA takes place about 140 years ago.

Um, I'm not trying to be a party pooper, this is a pretty good theory and all, but the game itself debunks that if you pay attention to the dialogue, Volo admits that everything he knows regarding the hisui legends and Arceus, comes from Cogita, when he takes you to meet her the first time. She even admits that when the player tells her what Volo did. She basically says he always wanted her to tell him more legends and never imagined that his hunt for Arceus and subsequent actions were the reason why he was so interested in her stories. He also tells the player that he's the one that opened the rift using Giratina, he just didn't expect Arceus to pull the player through it, and only let/helped the player do everything because he knew they were chosen by Arceus and that they would eventually lead him to it.
