I first saw this 8 years ago and unfortunately the most memorable part that stuck with me was the ragdoll physics of the animated city ravaged by a halt in rotation. Don't get me wrong, the physics and astronomy are done very well, and I've appreciated it more as I've gone on in my education. The the shear shock factor of giggling at something you really shouldn't, is all too memorable.

This type of concept of how we conveniently move along with the motion of the earth makes time often think: how convenient it is for life, that momentum exists. Think about how the universe could have unwittingly just had all properties of physics in place except for momentum, and we wouldn’t have had a surface to stand on. If there really was a Transporter as in Star Trek, it would need to be calibrated to beam you to your spot on the planet at the same speed as the planet's rotation. Otherwise, you would be killed by the speed of the planet and the objects on it pummeling you.

If the transporter coordinate system is based on some intergalactic grid, (which is problematic since the universe is expanding,) you would need to compensate for rotation. Assuming the coordinates are relative to the ship, (which is problematic as well,) you would not need to compensate if you were being transported from a ship in geostationary orbit.

In like manner...the first song on a 33 rpm record is spinning much faster relative to the needle than the last song. This is because the first song which is next to the outer edge of the record must travel farther than the track on the inside which has much less distance to cover in order to make a full rotation.

VY Canis Majoris is the biggest planet discovered. It would take over 400 years in a plane traveling 300MPH to go around it. No one could possibly comprehend it's size. Generally the bigger the planet the least inhabitable it is so when scientists are searching for earth-like planets they tend to search for planets in or around the same size as earth.
