We never do. It's a matter of falsification principles. As long as we cannot prove that there isn't a particular example of a species out there, we can never deem it as extinct, it's all based on observation.

The Kauai 'o'o story at the beginning is really chilling... even the song itself sounds kind of haunting. It sounds like the bird itself was scared, as if it somehow knew it was the last one left. I can't imagine what it must feel like to be the only one left.
@birdytaken
@birdytaken Жыл бұрын
thats so incredibly sad. there was a reverb added to it to give it that haunting effect but if you think about it it was just singing out of habit it still lived a very filling life. That o'o bird did have a mate in 1980. I loved and lost and after it was the only one left it had a "new normal" it learned to live amongst the other birds for years. Still doing it's call but I do not think it felt a lone or sorrow. I think it just did its best with what it had

Too bad it's a misnomer. You can't autobiograph someone else (or something - since we're talking about our planet). The term itself defines a biography about yourself written by yourself. If you take away the "auto" then it will be accurate: We are our planet's biographers.

I met david attenborough at a supermarket in London yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a bore and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

The Kaua'i 'Ō 'Ō bird singing to nobody, to nothing, alone, is the saddest damn thing I've ever heard. You hear of extinction events in the news and read about them in books but you never really consider that when a species goes extinct that at some point there was just one left, an animal that no matter how successful, no matter how strong and long living or fertile would die alone, wondering where the rest are. Thank god for David Attenborough. Most of what I know about the flora and fauna of Earth over the last 30 years has been down to his incredible programs. And well done Michael for this interview.

Your opening of this video brought tears to my eyes. What an honor (or honour) to be able to interview Sir David Attenborough. I loved this! I would like to recommend caution when commenting on predators, even if it does support the theme of drama played out in Nature. It is important that people understand the need for predators in the food web and to not vilify them. In California, for example, without our mountain lions and bobcats, vegetation would be cleared by herbivores faster than humans already have been. Let's be careful to not make ourselves part of the problem by promoting ignorance.

There are too many humans and not enough *free* education.

And there are plenty of people (a majority even) that simply doesn't care about free education, even if you were to provide it to them as a right. People need a reason to do anything, the option's existence alone does not suffice.

That doesn't change the fact that a lack of education mean's no choice, even if people don't choose to become educated,that does not mean they should not be given the chance.

Humans and our fascination with classification is actually extremely interesting and probably is a tool that helped us gain the initial edge over our primate relatives. The need to use our brains more for survival is the greatest struggle our early ancestors went through. Attenborough is truly a hero and I love hearing him speak

Not all of us are able to join up with crews who wash oil off animals, research animals in the wild or spearhead an initiative to save a species from extinction. Most of us are relegated to supporting all this from the sidelines. It is because of how society is set up. We spend our time working for money to support our family and pay off the debts we accrue from providing a home and transportation. We cannot neglect ourselves and so entertainment is more vital than a puritan would suggest. So, in the end, what time do we have? We have time to teach our family to respect the world. We have time to recycle to reduce the damage we do. We have time to watch these videos and learn so that we have more to teach... and sometimes, we have some money to give. Not much else for the regular person. Some... some lucky ones who have a skill or the right opportunities, can go out and become scientists, join the fight to save our world, discover our origins and to contact those out there who could help us. Our views, our comments and our cash support those few so that they can do more than the rest of us.
