!important! My thoughts below on some things I'm rather uncertain on. This was a tough one, two new voices of which I am both uncertain on. Curze I might modify for future videos a bit but is generally fine but I must admit I struggle when it comes to Vulcan. Whilst modern day earth ethnicities and cultures don't track 1:1 with 40k there is still very clear inspiration, inspiration that was clearer with the Salamanders prior to the nocturne recons. I want to be able to portray the depth he has and the joviality, whilst also, keeping him sounding distinct. And, as a very white guy from England there is obvious baggage with certain accents, and the last thing I want to do is cause a level of offence or insult. I have clear inspiration from the tts voice but I don't want to portray it as a comedy, but jovial and comical is a fine line. I'll likely try and modify the Vulcan voice too based on the feedback I get, so, any and all is worthwhile! In the meantime, I, hope you enjoyed it in this smaller test video at least! My thanks for watching, do all the usual KZbin things if you wish, it does help the channel greatly! Thanks again!

Love the narration and story as always, the accent im not so sure about tbh. Are you going to do a Welsh accent for Dorn, a nord for Russ, can you do a mongol accent for the Khan ? Dont get me wrong, was a good Caribbean accent but i dunno, might just be a bit too much, especially when contrasting with a self narration that is different, i think your normal voice is better if you are reading it in such a way, not as a 3rd party narrator
@danielquintonvo
@danielquintonvo Жыл бұрын
@@morgs456 I do tend to try and affect accents for different characters, indeed! I would certainly attempt something rather Nordic for Russ, I am not sure about the Khan as I am fairly certain I just can't manage an accent that would be up to a standard I deem acceptable though, if possible it's not off the table. Similarly, I did utilise a German accent for one of the characters in a VtM video and, in my inspiration from Sean Bean, gave Ned Stark a more Yorkshire accent in a Game of Thrones video. I do get your meaning, however and the switch between character voice and narration, especially interior monologues seems like it was jarring for some for sure. I would like to record more Vulkan but I may need to, if nothing else, work on a sort of softening at least so it is all more relatively similar across a singular recording. My thanks for watching.

I'll say I was a bit taken aback when I heard your Vulkan voice as that isn't how I imagine him, but I don't think there's anything wrong with you doing that voice. I've always imagined him to have a deeper fatherly voice, like a grandfather who can never stop smiling. A go to voice I always think of is Michael Clarke Duncan. Look up the video "Michael Clarke Duncan thanks Tom Hanks," to see what I mean

Something I’ll always love about Vulkan is, of his brothers (back before many turned traitor), he was considered the strongest. He was also the tallest. He was so strong, he pulled his punches so he wouldn’t hurt his brothers, who were Primarchs. I haven’t read this book, but I like to think after the first blow fell, Konrad had a quick flashback to previous Duels with Vulkan.

I just love how Vulcan played Konrad because of how arrogant Konrad, how certain he was of victory. Then Konrad leans in, expecting Vulkan to grovel, only to then hear, “It’s also a hammer!” And it caught him on the chin! Ah man! I recorded the bit where Corax saves Vulkan (but it's actually a hallucination) the other day! Getting it ready at the moment. First off, Curze sounds great, spot on I think. I sense just a little bit of hesitancy with Vulkan, but I think on the whole it sounds good, and not overdone, which is the tricky thing right? I think if you get fully stuck in without reserve, you'll nail it.
@danielquintonvo
@danielquintonvo Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! and, certainly hesitancy with Vulkan. There's a lot of baggage with me attempting that accent, and a desire to get one of the more contentious, rather complex characters and voices correct! I will likely tone down the accent a bit but I am likely more comfortable with it now, anyway. And I am excited to see your video when it is up! Gives a nice contrast to this one too, for sure! and thanks again for watching!
@TalesOfTerraVA
@TalesOfTerraVA Жыл бұрын
For sure! Most 40k fans seem to be agree that whilst Vulkan and the Salamanders have pitch black skin regardless of what part of Terra their ancestors came from, Vulkan himself is black, which is a broad group. All the artwork lends itself to this too. So I think it's right that he should have the depth and tonality of a "black voice" so that he's distinct. I don't think it necessarily needs toning down, just full confidence in your own delivery! I'd never heard or even thought of him as Jamaican before as I'd never seen much TTS, but there's no reason it can't work if you get it right. Quite a few of the Salamanders are described as coming from Nord Afrique in the books. Also, through gene seed, legionaries inherit similarities to their primarch. Horus Aximand looks identical to Horus yet before his transformation into a space marine, he had no genetic links to Horus. It's not farfetched that some of Vulkan's sons would look almost identical to him and share a similar tonality of voice. regardless of whether they're Terran or Nocturnian. I went for a generic central/east African accent. Jonathan Keeble uses one in the audiobooks. Would be interested to hear your thoughts when I end up posting it!@@danielquintonvo

Now, hold it by the end as far from the weight as you can, and try to do a one handed uppercut with it, the same as Vulkan does. Then remember, Dawnbringer takes three Astartes to lift it. I do absolutely agree! This was essentially my test video for a variant of the voice but I did certainly expect a... varied degree of comments but this feels like one of the fairest takes yet. I did certainly want to try and cut out a bit of the comedic angle that the TTS take normally has but I acknowledge the baggage that comes along with it, too. It's sort of a lose-lose situation thanks to the old GW lore retcons. That being said I just want to be able to portray Vulkan as the badass he is, whilst still maintaining some of that more jovial personality that he has, ever the friendliest Primarch! So feedback like this does help a lot! Thanks for watching!

I appreciate the TTS inspiration but that is a parody intended to be silly. I don't think the Jamaican accent fits in the more serious context of the actual lore. A lot of people seem to forget the Salamanders are literally black skinned, not real life ethnically black, and it's due to radiation from their planet not based on a real ethnic culture like the Celestial Lions chapter. Vulkan and nocturne people are blacksmiths which I would tend to associate more with europe. I actually think Vulkan would not really have any significant accent but his voice should be quite deep and calm due to his size and temperament. Just my two cents. I think you nailed curze though, sounded exactly how I imagined it. Nice Work!

They used to be more inspired modernly 'ethnically black' (as flawed as the terms might be, even now, no matter in 40k years time) I believe prior to the GW changes to the Salamanders and their home planet. Blacksmithing itself is not strictly European, the best guess we have is that it emerged first in Anatolia, but there is evidence to suggest Africa has had blacksmiths for just as long as that. I imagine though, if one doesn't include the old pre-retcon Salamander aesthetics Greek would likely be the closest for Vulkan, thanks to the name. That being said, I do plan on modifying the voice slightly (as I do with most of the Primarchs I have attempted) and the feedback is always worthwhile! So, my thanks! and, my thanks for watching!

@@danielquintonvo tbh, in the back of my mind he has dred locks now lol. But Micheal Duncan is kinda the ball park I think of when I think of Vulcans voice. But you know, this is just my head cannon besically, I like your work man so do what you think works. Just tossing my 2 cents in the hat is all.

The accent and voice for Vulcan are very well done, but I think it might be too heavy. In isolation it’s fine, but the contrast between Vulcan’s voice and his internal dialogue was kinda jarring.

I think I do agree, which is why I chose a fairly short excerpt to attempt it first and I will likely try and tone it down, or shift it, for any further Vulcan parts I do. Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching!

Vulcan isn't, black or african. That voice...wtf were you thinking. He's appearances isn't one of racial association. It's an outter physical alteration like Magnus and Sanguineous. Think more like a guy who is genetically tied the emperor who has black skin and red eyes and above all of this isn't in anyway tied to Africa. So yeah, wtf!

Vulkan and many of the Salamanders used to be more conventionally black prior to the GW lore shift but I do concede that yes, they are now no longer strictly 'black', in a 21st century sense of the word. May I ask why this accent for Vulkan is unacceptable for you but a British accent for the other Primarchs isn't an issue? None of them are British, Britain no longer exists in the 41st millenium.

A gruff "english" when in english. As where can't be sure where it's coming from just the language is spoken. But african is like doing stereotypically Jamaican, french or cockney. Spectrum accents. All of which fall apart only having small to no hints remaining the more precise and practiced one becomes talking in a state of advanced clarity to a language like english. English is very dry language not promoting any actual accents, habit of speaking it in a way, is the accent. The use of strong accents on any primarchs isn't a good way to portray them. Much so when ever mentioning the mass of intellect they wield.

The primarchs do have different accents though, obviously, they all grew up on different planets entirely Some variation in speech Is so much more interesting than boring ass Dorn style dead pan delivery for every primarch
