While all primarchs are supposed to be gifted with that level of intelligence (some more than others, but still...) it gets worse in Curze's case, as he also had the gift of prescience. He didn't need to calculate those moves, he literally SAW them in advance, and still got krumped.

The thing that confuses anyone the most in 40k is common sense. Vulkan uses a hammer as a hammer, it short circuits the plan of the future seeight super genius. The Khan decides to get more information before choosing which side to join, it fries the brain of Russ. Big E tries to provoke Malcador by using a basic taunt, it fails spectacularly in his favor. Common sense is op in 40k, because its in such short supply.

To be fair, Vulkan was utterly mentally broken like 5 minutes before this scene. If he hadn't been "healed" by having a vision of the Emperor, it would have been a one sided massacre. While lost to anger, Vulkan doesn't defend himself and gets easily killed over and over. Hell, an unaugmented human murdered him a bunch of times with an eldar gun in Unremembered Empire.

Indeed, it's like the old battle tactics of the Orks - 'We find 'em and kill 'em'. Blunt and to the point, but it does the job. There was a cartoon I once saw of an Eldar, a Dark Angel and an Ork, each talking about their weapon: The Eldar held up an elegant sword 'This blade was made over a thousand hours by the wraithbone singers of my craftworld!' The Dark Angel draws an impressive power-sword 'This blade has been passed down in my chapter for 10,000 years!' The Ork rummages in a pile of scrap , finds a chunk of metal that is sharp and heavy, bolts it onto his axe handle and swings it for a moment 'This'll do!' He grunts.

Something to remember here. Curze is wearing full Primarch plate...Vulcan is in smallclothes, basically naked, and was MANHANDLING Curze. Even full on Primarch plate doesn't protect you very well from Vulacan's strength unleashed.

I think its more of a case of looking at so many complex angles to garuntees his victory that he forgot that sometimes a simple solution is all you need. Kurze was so preoccupied with out thinking Vulkan that he hadn't considered that Vulkan might not need to out think him. not to mention before this point he's tortured Vulkan so much that he was practically reduced to a frothing animal which made it easy for even unenhanced humans with strong guns to kill him, much less a Primarch.
