Everywhere you cut to replace a dented or rusted panel...theres more rust. This guy doing the work is a maestro, he's taken more care fitting the panels than the factory workers did when it was new, but by the time he's done, there's hardly going to be any original kona bus left. Lol

That's what I said. This vehicle has been chopped up and pieced back together more than a boxed puzzle. It's like you were only using the original vehicle as a template to build a new vehicle.

@@jamesclukey7488 I'm not complaining about the build, on a van this old and neglected, there's going to be rust, and the time to address it is now, it's just unfortunate there's been so much but they are doing it right and either cutting it out or treating it with rust converter. Better to do it this way than rush and have rust pop up in a few years

I just stumbled on your videos this week, March 2021. Makes me feel good, and bad. Thirty years ago in Colorado I bought a 1963 23-window Deluxe, sans seats with 3/16 inch plywood replacing the ragtop, for $250. Pulled the engine and used it for 5 years in my 1967 Bug, my first car. A fellow bought the Bus, including engine which we replaced back into the Bus, for $350. Would that I had it today... two orders of magnitude ROI? But I'd have been hauling the Bus around the country all these years. OK, had I known about Skinner when I was in grad school at UC Davis, maybe I would have hung onto it. But I had no money as a grad student. You are getting me back to thinking about getting my 1972 Bug back on the road. I have a rebuilt engine, started replacing tranny mounts and CV joints years ago, then Life ensued. I did take up an offer two years ago from a local fellow in Worcester MA to drive his lovely '67 Bug for a few miles here in Newton MA. Long past time to get my Bug back on the road, no?

I’ve always wanted a Micro-Bus. I had a friend in High School that had one,1969-1973. He shortened his which made it somewhat tenuous to drive. Back then they were cheap and somewhat plentiful. Now they are rare and expensive. I live in Fort Worth and haven’t seen one in the 22 years I’ve lived here.

Yeah it was hard for me... roof has some dents... clean, por15, and sanded with bond filler... then primer all over... dad did that back in 2018... wish didn’t happen since i am cutting the roof off at very last minute 😣😂😂 thanks for watching 🤙🏼

Oh man, I laughed so incredibly hard when you slid off you pants and had boardshorts underneath! One summer, when I was 9 years old, I spent so much time hanging out at the public pool that I decided to see how long I could go without taking off my swim trunks. I slept in them, wore them under my church clothes on Sunday, and showered with them on (EXACTLY, like you did!). I lasted 16 days! Oh crap, I am still laughing as I write.

I enjoy watching these Kona videos and seeing the detail that goes into the metal work. I believe anyone should be allowed to do to their own vehicle whatever they want. That being said, I'm pretty sure this clone 21 window will end up costing more than a #1 condition genuine 21 window would cost to buy.

@micbergsma - in a lot of your videos you have a neat mini air sander being used. Could you provide any details on that? or if there's more than one, could you list all of those you have found useful? I have been looking around for something that useful and while there are a number of mini air sanders that come close, I haven't found one quite as useful as the one from the workshop that you are using. (I am in Australia).

I love the work you guys put into this. I just could never modify an original VW to make it a different model. The m-code wouldn't match and it wouldn't be a classic anymore, just a custom. Don't get me wrong, I would still love it, but it feels kinda wrong. Did Skinner's shop close down for covid, I guess we will find out next episode since March 16th most shops were closed.

I surprised he doesn't use air to help cold down the metal in between welds to prevent warpage. Even with grinding you need to be careful not to heat up the metal too much or it will warp on you.

I do hope as your bus was originally attacked violently by rust that there are measures in the future before you get to far along to protect this bus from goi g through that again as it appears this vehicle will end up in Hawaii there is no road salt but ocean salt. So it needs protected well.
