The big battery ID.3 is penalized in weight so it's not allowed to carry 5 passengers. Same space but lacking the middle seat belt - most people never have 5 people in their car so it's not an issue for 95% of people I think.

As others have pointed out, the issue with the large battery version is not about space, but weight, there are wight limits for this type of cars and the ID.3 with the large battery is too close to that limit to allow for a 5th person and luggage so they had to remove that seat. It's an unfortunate rule that comes from long ago, it doesn't make any sense for EVs but still it has to comply with those regulations.

Excellent charging curve [combined with its good efficiency] making the ID3 a highly usable road trip car able to do sustained 70mph/110kph highway speeds without having to nurse range. The 'autobahners' might want the bigger 77kWhr model but this does the speed limit fine in most of Europe. The ID3 is being produced in volume, let's see if the take up fulfills the promise.

@@bjornnyland Do you know the trick question for children where you ask "what car will finish faster 100km long race - car A, that is driving 100km/h or car B, that is driving 500km/h first 50km and 50km/h second half?" (or you can ask for average speed) This is similar problem -slow charging is adding disproportionately more time. Difference to 89% (88,8% for tesla is close enough) was 7 minutes here. Let's assume that ID3 would charge at 25kw average and M3 15kw average last 10-11%. That's again roughly 7 minute difference (20 vs 13 minutes). Don't know what are the exact averages, but you could be surprised how close it can be. Especially if normalized for range where id3 needs 2-3% less from its larger pack (it was 402 vs 413km for the whole pack).

Also not everyone will want a little bit faster charging and speed for more money. ID3 will sell like crazy whether you like it or not and it it will take some sales away from model 3 . Currently they don't have to, they cannot keep up with manufacturing anyway. And of course, they can earn a few extra Euros by offering fast charge as an option. To be quite honest, the small battery is probably a lowish demand option anyway.

@@Soordhin i think they will sell less small batteries than big batteries too which will show that they have to improve all options by 5-10kWh. they need to add two more modules in all configurations or use higher energy density for the bigger battery. but that is just my guess. having 3 options allows to see real world demand very nicely

@@MikeDeeee not sure about that. Can a 50kW fast charger reach a voltage above 400V? A proper test would be better, I think.
@MikeDeeee
@MikeDeeee 4 жыл бұрын
@@brunomsa Of course they can! Otherwise they could not charge the cars fully. ABB Terra chargers can supply up to 500 V. But you are right: they are also usually limited to 50 kW. So you can derive the charge curve at a 50 kW charger from the Ionity charge curve in the video; but it is a little more complex: If the current shown on the Ionity screen is less than 125 A, and the power is less than 50 kW, the 50 kW charger can achieve the same charge rate. If the power is more than 50 kW and the current is less than 125 A, the 50 kW charger can only achieve 50 kW. If the current at Ionity is more than 125 A, the power at a 50 kW charger is the voltage multiplied by 125 A, capped at 50 kW.

Stefan Schulthess I see what you mean. My car a 2019 E-Niro has the same power train and probably the same battery management software. In my experience the state of charge at the outset and both the ambient temperature and battery temperature can make a significant impact on the initial speed of charge. Maybe worth a look at Fastned web site which gives detailed profiling of the battery charging performance of many cars. In future this may be ever more important, though in the U.K. there are very few DC chargers that can offer more than 50kW and they are very expensive. A big battery is a huge advantage for those who can charge at home on solar or off- peak tariffs where speed often is not highly important - though I recognise the value of speed on long journeys or for those who can't charge at home.

These tests and comparisons are relevant only for those few who rely heavily on public chargers due to regular long distance driving. For the vast majority who make shorter daily journeys and park their car at home every night, AC charging at cheap rates is their experience. Public charging is chaotic in the UK and if you will frequently rely on public charging then Tesla is the only choice of EV for the reliable supercharger network. Ionity were setup by the large car makers to try and replicate the Tesla charger experience in Europe. In recent weeks the UK Ionity chargers are reported to be as unreliable as the other UK chargers. I stopped at Cambridge services to find only 2 of 4 chargers working each with max. charging speed of 35kWh (free vend). For most EV owners, Ionity will charge 70-80p per kWh compared to less than 10p per kWh cheap night rate at home. I’m paying 5p/kWh for four hours of charging each night so my energy cost for driving is less than 1.5p per mile.

Far from a VW fan here, but it may be too early to tell how long the Tesla pack will be in a different league. I say this, because the Tesla 85kwh pack charged fast until Tesla decided they screwed the pooch and nerfed it. A nerfed 85kwh Tesla probably charges slower than my Bolt EV. While I'd like to believe (and do) that Tesla corrected the issue, they have a tenancy to be.... a bit optimistic about things and reverse course. All that being said, without Tesla and the people willing to buy their cars, non of the EVs on the market or planned exist.
