this trend started as a funny way to show what girls EAT for dinner. I remember watching this short videos and feeling represented on them because I also eat whatever I find in the fridge but sadly ‘girl dinner’ became a bunch of tiktoks showing nothing but a glass of water as dinner. Yeah in the beginning it was just a relatable trend to show how it’s okay not to cook a full meal when you’re too lazy. As someone with adhd I often lack the attention span to make “proper” meal the original trend was very validating because I too often go for lazy dinners. I often throw some cheese on top of leftovers and heat it up in the microwave and call it dinner when I’m too lazy to cook from scratch. That’s what the girl dinner trend was intended to be about until it got over saturated by ed content.

I didn’t see girl’s dinner that way. For me it was a great concept, allow me to explain. As women, wifes and mothers, we are expected to cook delicious and nutritious meals for others and healthy balanced meals for ourselves. So girl’s dinner for me sounds like a rejection of norms. Normalizing eating whatever you want, no matter if it’s healthy or not, as opposed to our « duty » to cook for everyone.
@lxvezaya Жыл бұрын
Here is the thing there are some videos where they are making it look like eating very little is normal,(for example just a gum for dinner, which I understand not eating a whole ass buffet since I don't eat a lot for dinner myself, but a gum for dinner should NOT be normalized)when it's obviously not
@nad-ia-8069 Жыл бұрын
@@lxvezaya that’s a very interesting debate. For me there’s a distinction between something that occurs a lot therefore is shown a lot and representing more of something than there actually is to purposely shift mentalities. I feel like the TikToks we saw in the video weren’t praising their small proportion nor demonizing eating a lot so I’m quite 50/50 on that matter

@elinat2414 Жыл бұрын
I would say that there is a big difference between a lovely charcuterie board with crackers, fruit, meat and cheese (which is a lovely low effort dinner option if you don't want to cook), and literally eating scraps of food not sufficient for survival. Also while it is NOT healthy to go to the extreme and eat scraps, there is something to be said about modest portion sizes; especially for shorter women that aren't super physically active. As a 5'4 woman, if I eat three full meals a day, I will usually feel overfull and gain weight. Sometimes a bit of fruit or crackers is all it takes to hit the spot when I'm hungry and it's not time for a meal yet. I do not need as much food as someone that is taller and/or more physically active. Our view of portion sizes are so distorted by constantly seeing massive meals, especially when we eat out. I just don't like how Zoe is constantly smug about women not eating enough, when everyone has different nutritional and dietary needs.
@LotusesGalaxyOcean Жыл бұрын
I don’t think she is smug personally. Its more the issue that this trend is a bad idea for most. Just as an example myself I could not do those charcuterie boards shown.I am 5” 6” and a healthy weight. I am not very active right now. I would essentially need several slices of bread and probably a very large chunk of cheese and meats to get full or even kind of close to full. I am a pretty everyday average height and weight. So looking at the size of those boards I would probably need to triple them in portion even if I was looking at a reasonable sized one that she showed. I find this trend creepy also because I have become very aware of how different foods make me feel due to their nutrition. Everyone has different requirements but to me it is about how easy these meals would be to do in an unhealthy way. It defeats the point because to me what would make sense is very simple easy meals that still taste good. Stuff that is a great hack so that people can keep on hand for lazy days. For example sometimes I will cook a large pot of rice and then keep it in the fridge. If I cannot decide what I want to cook I can easily add cheese, eggs and vegetables to that and make a bowl of it for dinner by just microwaving it. Oatmeal cup muffins, a few boiled eggs and a some fruit…. You get what I mean. Solutions that naturally encourage healthy delicious choices is what I don’t see much of in this trend.

I’m pretty sure “girl dinner” is just a joke. It’s not about normalizing unhealthy eating. It can’t be because it scrutinizes a phenomena among women that is already normal. My mom and sister have always eaten like this when they are too tired or lazy to cook. There’s literally a “guy dinner” meme where a dude moves a bunch of trash and beer cans off his bed to reveal old pizza. It’s just a joke, and the fact that its unhealthy is already presupposed by the joke.

It’s so interesting that you had the opposite experience with food shaming. I feel like for me I’ve always been naturally thin so even if I eat a large amount of food for my size, it’s “never enough” to anyone. It’s like people expect to me to eat like a 200 lbs man to prove that im not naturally thin since they believe I’m thin because I starve myself. It got really bad because I would stuff myself until I wanted to throw up to avoid comments like “you didn’t finish your food thats why you’re so skinny”. Like American portions are huge im sorry I can’t finish it? I’ll bring it home and get hungry again in a few hours and eat it though lol. I understand Zoe's point, as this trend can be a bad influence on young girls and encourage disordered eating. However - as someone that does "girl dinner" type of meals pretty often out of laziness and is shamed for it, it's reassuring to see other people doing the same thing! The point is not to promote nor encourage eating this way everyday, but just show that it's okay to not always eat a perfectly balanced home cooked meal. Tbh we should just stop being obsessed with food. Just nourish our body according to our wants / needs and stop comparing ourselves to others. Having a healthy relationship with food is NOT about eating healthy foods. It's about enjoying your food, regardless of what people or society think, or if that food is healthy or unhealthy.

Eating something for dinner is better than eating nothing. No one is saying "girl dinner" should be for every meal and like every eating trend it is taken too far by those with disordered eating. However, as a wife and mother who grew up with very traditional gender roles, the girl dinner trend removed the guilt I had in not cooking a full family meal every night, despite my husband and child being able to make food. When I'm anxious, exhausted, or just low spoons in general I relish in the ease and instant gratification of just assembling comforting snacks and ingredients into a meal. I eat girl dinner the same way as I eat all my meals, intuitively and until I'm satisfied. Sometimes I want a hugh bowl of pasta with salad and dessert, others all im really craving are berries, string cheese, and chips- especially if I had a heavy meal earlier in the day. Having a small meal every once in a while is not disordered eating if you're being true to your bodie's needs in that moment.

For me "girl dinner" is just a depression meal most of the time, thing that you can eat when you can't get yourself to actually make anything. It is good that a certain person eats anything, but it is a BIG sign to seek help, because if it is the only meal you eat the situation is really bad. At first it really looked like struggling people showing their depression meals, but through time, as it turned into a trend, people are just posting random stuff that they have at home just to participate, which is even more disturbing. Is tiktok doing the tumblr thing that mental issues are hot and sexy? And that everyone wants to be that, not seeing how first people posting their "girl dinner" are mostly just struggling. This trend has so many layers of concerne, that I wanna cry.

This kind of dinner is a bit normal in my family but we eat our meals at different times. In the morning we eat eggs, sausages, and beans for breakfast. Then at 3 or 4 pm we have our main meal which can be rice with chicken or pork, or soup, or lentils. And for dinner which is usually at 8 or 9 pm we eat less because we are going to sleep in a couple of hours anyways.

"The most disturbing trend ever"... I beg to differ. Male suicide is a little more of a disturbing trend.

I know that this isn't the point of this video or of what this trend has sadly become, but where I'm from it's totally normal to only have a cooked warm meal for lunch and then bread with cheese in the evening. Now that I don't live at home anymore it's easier for me to cook in the evening and have a warm dinner but that means I'll have my cheese bread for lunch. That has nothing to do with cutting calories or anything, it's just how most people eat here 😅 (I remember when I went to the US with my family and after three weeks of only really greesy burgers and pizza because everything else was so expensive, we all craved some black bread with good cheese)

My feed shows girl dinners of all sides or canned goods or a thousand snackies… I question some people’s feeds and hope they curate better

As for "girl dinner", I saw this trend only in the context of idols and not actually food and I thought that was the point from the beginning 🙈

"#girl dinner?, More like girl you need to eat some dinner...a lot of you have eating disorders"- that's one of the girl dinner reaction qoutes I saw. I thought girl dinner was like..a mix of low effort meals and depression meals ..like sometimes it's a joke about how you don't have to be cooking everyday and other times it's showing the toll depression can have on your appetite and how recently we tend to ROMANTICISE our lives (including the mental illnesses that come with it) and how harmful it can be to view a problem that way. ✨#Girl dinner✨ but it's water and a bag of peanuts..like- . Thanks for doing a vid on this topic. ❤ Insightful to say the least fr.

Srry dude it’s not actually a trend, it’s more so something a lot of women already did without knowing it was common. I live in communal living and this summer I noticed basically all the women would make girl dinners pretty often and I never saw a man find a random assortment of things. I ever had to explain girl dinner to quite a few women that we’re eating girl dinners, because they didn’t know about it they just do it already

I feel like something that was meant to be a satire on low-effort meals became co-opted into the ongoing discourse between society's image of the ideal (skinny, dainty) woman and the reality, which is that we are human beings who require sufficient nutrition. It seems that anything that can be influenced by societal standards, is- every time I've seen a food trend emerge, it has been adopted and altered in some way by the eating disorder crowd, who always drag things into one or another extreme end of the metaphorical sliding scale. Perhaps instead of relabeling meals as "Girl Dinner" and then applying and rewarding new expectations to that, we should stick to dance trends.

if anyone likes the idea of a fun meal with a bunch of different foods like the charcuterie board looking girl dinners, look up “snack plate meals”. it’s an actual thing that a nutritionist showed me when i was recovering from an ed. if you look into it properly, it can be an actual filling and nutritious meal. idk why but i feel like it’s more fun to eat a plate of food that has a ton of things instead of just 2 or 3 regular sized things.

Lets not make fun of the ones that choose not to eat as much as others for their own personal reasons just because it makes you feel insecure about the amount your eating

I’m very guilty of cooking for my boyfriend only. If it were just for me I probably wouldn’t cook at all, even though I generally like to cook. It says something not so great that he is worth the effort but I’m not. I consider myself a feminist, but I need to examine why I feel this way.

I totally get that approach. I luckily have a healthy relationship with food and I really just thought about it being about my pesto, cheese, grapes dinner that I eat when I am too lazy to cook something proper after being out all day
