Sandwiches of History

My first intro to combining walnuts and mayonnaise was from dish I used to get once in from a Chinese Restaurant across the street from when I worked at Netflix. Walnut Shrimp that had a mayonnaise sauce. It’s quite tasty. Unfortunately, the Walnut Picnic Sandwich from 1914’s The Neighborhood Cook Book ain’t that. And while it is epically simple to make, it requires at least one hour in the fridge. If you’re tempted to think that it’s because back then mayonnaise was a sauce, just remember that jarred mayonnaise was first sold in the is around 1907 and by 1914 was widely available everywhere. Go figure.

I would have expected cream cheese rather than mayo on this one

Walnut, cheddar, and chopped date goes great on a sweetish multigrain bread.

The greatest innovation of the early 1900's was trying every single combination of mayonnaise + thing to narrow it all down to boiled eggs, tuna, and macaroni as the 3 good mayonnaise salads

the way I already knew you were going to say "mayonnaise" immediately after the chopped walnuts.... and yet I was still like "oh no" when it happened

When I read the title my mind imagined walnuts in marshmallow fluff.

Of all the sandwiches which say to butter the bread, this 1 probably should have been buttered, due to its time refrigerated & possibly not consumed until later @ picnic.

This is another one of those "the cupboard is bare" sandwiches. I get a desperation sandwich - I don't get putting it in a cookbook!

This is strangely similar to a thing I used to have as a kid. It was all of that, but with sliced banana as well. My older brother liked Miracle Whip instead of mayo.

Thank you for teaching me how to pronounce schug. I’ve had it in several green chef recipes, and I’ve always pronounced it like shrug without the r. 🤪

Tea sandwiches become more interesting when they are served in a variety of shapes, heights, cuts of ingredients on a well done board that looks nice. Then it becomes more of a meal or a light summer dinner...

With all things walnuts, my immediate thought is blue cheese... a creamy one, like St. Agur or Roaring 40s... nice plus up with the zhoug.

I can kind of see how it could possibly work, maybe - with a lot of help. I cannot eat any spicy foods at all right now because of a GI disease, so I might try za’atar, capers, and more vegetable matter, like cucumbers and marinated eggplant. Or maybe just the popular carrot and kohlrabi pickles in Asian cooking, depending on what’s in my fridge. Thanks for an interesting sandwich idea.

sometimes I wonder, how many people in history ever made these sandwiches. Maybe some of them only came into being a few times. Maybe some of them were just theoretical and never got made at all.

Day 17 of asking Barry to make the sandwich I submitted!~~ Not sure how I’d plus this one up, don’t think it’s for me. I’d probably add meat and other stuff, but then it wouldn’t be a “walnut sandwich”. Thanks for your courage Barry!

I would plus it up Chinese Style. Hot honey or something similar to get that sweet fried walnut effect with a bit of kick from some heat. Toast the bread before making it for best results. I'm baked and you're welcome.

It’s pronounced Schoog or Zhook. And even if you took saw dust and plused it up with Schug it would be atleast an 8. So i call it an illegal plus up akin to Bacon!
