Well considering the awful 🇺🇸 government had a draft for that war (a practice worse than slavery). I find it hard to criticise Walter for taking pride in what he considers service to his country. As for that possibly correlating to hatred for "chinaman" I find the argument to be speculative at best but more likely slanderous in reality. I grew up on a street that had a Walter Sobchak type character, he served in ‘Nam as a Marine as a infantryman for a few months before he was shot in the jaw and sent home. You never would’ve never known it by looking at him though, whoever was his surgeon/s did a bang up job of patching his face back together. Anyways it was without question the most defining moment in his life, the man is without question proud of his service as a Marine and that he severed his country in Vietnam.
