I felt the same way trying to watch most American tv shows, like Riverdale, The Vampire Diaries, etc. I found every time I watched an episode, I would leave feeling depressed and unhappy. But when I spend a half hour playing piano, or learning a new language, I leave feeling productive and excited. You put into words perfectly what I've been learning through trial and error for years!

I’ve stopped watching screens after dinner. When you set up books, music and other offline activities you’ll find plenty to do and you will feel much more relaxed for bed. I only watch screens during a lunch break or during the day on the weekend and as a consequence of that I’m much more selective about what I watch. I think identifying what content has a positive influence on us is a really important practice.

Wow Literally the scriptures your talking about is my lock screen As a woman who was actually addicted to hard core porn at one point we really need to guard what goes into our minds because it starts small but only gets worse until your watching stuff you never even could have imagined before and it literally is toxic poison for our minds Jesus Christ has delivered me from this addiction and it’s honestly hard because the temptation is their but I deleted all social media because even if u follow clean stuff their is always the random half naked person pops up to temp you to go watch the bad stuff This video really resonated with me Pro tip: Take a month to just delete your social media apps and every time u want to go to social media just read your bible and watch it change your life Love you!

Sooo much truth here. Before social media, people were not trying to be superstars of lifestyle-envy pursuits. They just pretty much lived their lives. So, we had a comparatively small group of people that we were in daily contact with which made it sooo much easier to find contentment in our own life. When you watch people around the world doing things you can’t, it’s a recipe for envy, jealousy, and discontentment. We begin to believe we are entitled to have more than we have and become ungrateful for what we already have. Thank you again for speaking these wonderful messages!

I needed to rewatch this today. I couldn´t eat for the last two days because I read an article about ... well, I want to spare you the details, but it was about a particularily slow and gruesome murder of a 1yo child. Now everytime my baby cries I break into tears because I have to think about how that poor child must have felt in its last days. I will abstain from news sources for a few weeks now.

I couldn't agree more about those Instagram models. I'm considered a "pretty girl," but when I look at Instagram, and every girl is under 25, has a flawless face, size 00 body with DDD breasts, hair like a Disney princess, I definitely don't feel good about myself. I know in real life you don't see women like this that often at all, but Instagram makes you think every female out there is hotter than a Victoria's Secret model.

I had never heard of the idea before that we can mistake entertainment for rest, but I have found that to be so true!! I would sit on the couch all day on a Saturday and binge watch shows and scroll through Instagram, but I would never feel rested afterwards. Since I’ve been aware of that I have tried to cut the time I spend on digital devices and I have felt such a huge difference mentally. This was such a good video and so applicable to my life right now.

Waaaiiit!!! You're in Michigan too!?!? Eeekk! The *BEST* place to be! 😇💕 You've made some very good points here. I'm of the belief that if something frustrates you should not dwell on it unless you are *able* to and *willing* to take the time, energy and resources to do something about it. This goes for politics, unnecessary negative news, rude comments/ unpleasant people and the like. I agree with you that we all have a set amount of energy to give to the world on a day to day basis. We need to find what we're good at, where we really shine, and where *WE* can make a difference that matters and focus there. With that being said, I am TOTALLY guilty of following Instagram accounts that do make me feel less than others and can spend too much time scrolling. Thanks for the reminder to live more mindfully! ♥ Have a beautiful week! ~Phantom

Amen! As a Christian, I very much appreciate you making content like this! We can all benefit from a reminder to guard our hearts and minds. As a mom of 3 littles, I think it's also very important because we need to guard the hearts of our children as well, until they are old enough to guard their own hearts, and we cannot do that effectively unless we are guarding our own hearts. Our children are paying attention to what they see us consuming. I would much rather that they grow up watching me read my Bible every day rather than watching me scroll through social media every day. "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." Proverbs 4:23 ❤

Thank you so much for this video! I was going to delete my Facebook account and and then at sometime open up another and make wiser choices at that time. I just really don't like all the 24/7 negativity on there and it seems that I'm either blocking, unfriending or leaving groups. I know that we can't expect to be happy all the time, that there has to be balance, but some stuff really gets to me, so I watch my Pureflix ( Christian form of Netflix), read my Bibles and concentrate on happier things and praying for mercy or help with the negative things. The Bible does say to watch what company you keep, because you'll be tempted and He's always right, because I get on FB just to browse and before I know it, I'm getting upset, cussing up a storm, etc...when I had been doing alright before then. Thank you for giving me the courage to finally make up my mind.

You are absolutely right that we need to consider the kinds of information and influences (including people) we give our time, attention, and focus to. It’s important to remember that there are unfortunately many people out there who want to and get a sense of power and control by seeing the influence that they are having on you and this influence can be negative. People with many insecurities often try to mask this and may come across as confident and even be bullies, and it’s important to be aware of this and to detach from such people and situations. Very good advice to listen to yourself and how certain people and things make you feel. To me, you are not just Mrs Midwest, but Mrs Mindset 😊

THANK YOU I really needed to hear this!!! I don’t give myself any rest I just shut my thoughts down with consuming media, I spend at least two hours a day on instagram and for what? When I think I wanna stay off social media I watch series! I feel like all of this has made me less and less connected to God spiritually and even less connected to myself. I started a few years ago only picking positive things to look at, whether instagram accounts or series but after a while even those so called positive things were too much. The amount is how you said just too much. Thank you again for this video, maybe it is not about stereotypical femininity but it helps lay the foundation for it, so that we don’t have any excuses later not to try 😊 (btw hi it’s @theparistimes from instagram!)
