I think a slight exageration about how many Chiefys broke down, they dont have 9 chiefys there, never have had. The engine got better (should have been replaced years before though - after all foreign Chiefys used the CV12 later used in the Chally), most of the issues were in the 1970's when it was chronically underpowered. Reputation sticks though

Actually if you look up chieftain 800/900 you will see that they did have experimental tanks with chobham on them. They just weren't produced like the regular chieftains.

jordan wootton As you say, the Chieftain 800 and 900 were developmental projects by Vickers Armstrong based around including the Chobham armour that had been approved for use (and shared with the Americans). However, they were never in active service anywhere or even mass produced and look completely different (the tanks are complete redesigns). Ultimately the settled design was the Challenger 1. So why they are worth mentioning...

At 10:06, a few seconds before the two tanks are spotted by AreaOfDefect and Jingles, you can see them going by the belltower underneath the center-top HUD elements. Look where the blue line ends and follow it down where it meets the ridge. There's a little triangle gap between palm trees, ridge and belltower. The gap bets bigger as AreaofDefect's turret turns to the left.

"Well, actually Jingles" moment The Stillbrew package was not Chobham armor, it was just a thick layer of RHA with rubber and another thick later of RHA. Also, as it was proven during the Iran-Iraq War, Chieftain could only truly trust its gun, as Iraqi T-62s with 3BM3 Fin rounds didnt have too much trouble going trough its turret front. The Iranians used the Cheiftain Mk 5, and that combat experience was the true push the british needed to press Stillbrew into service

Oddly a number of middle eastern countries fielded the Chieftain and in fact some of them still do (Iran, Jordan and Oman) my dad was a tanker in the 11th Hussars and commanded the Conq, Cent and Chieftain and he said that except for the engine it was a fantastic tank (after the Cent that was high praise).

Jingles the Chieftain's add on armour was called Stillbrew not Chobham. Chobham is Challenger. Also the Iranians used the Chieftain in the desert although it had a diesel. 😊

"What the Chieftain would have been used for if World War III had actually happened..." is not as a ridge sniper. With their engine reliability, it's more likely that entrenchments would have been dug for them, so they could be used as occasionally mobile anti-tank pillboxes. Since there was nothing wrong with their guns, they'd be useful defending choke-points and critical locations where mobility wasn't necessary. An engine with a sixty-five percent failure rate isn't a problem if you don't have to run it.
