20:01 It's both! The American pronunciation (and due to the overwhelming popularity of American media in the English-speaking world, the most prevalent) of "lieutenant" is "lootenant," but in England (and the UK armed forces) it is pronounced "leftenant." The American pronunciation is the more technically correct as it was derived from French where "lieu" has a "loo" sound. The British pronunciation originated as a deliberate affectation to sound less French due to the historical rivalry between England and France. Because Games Workshop is based in Nottingham, Warhammer tends to default to the British pronunciation. Indeed, Titus isn't a lieutenant. Space Marine 1 came out in 2011. Back then, Warhammer 40k was in a different time period of the lore. You didn't have Primaris Marines yet, Cadia hadn't been blown up, the galaxy wasn't split in half by the Great Rift, and all the loyalist Primarchs were either dead, presumed dead, or missing in action. Space Marines back then didn't have the rank of lieutenant (that was introduced with the Primaris Marines). Back then Space Marine ranks broadly went: Chapter Master > Captain > Sergeant > Battle Brother > Initiate (Scout). During the events of Space Marine 1, Titus is the Captain of the Ultramarines 2nd Company, a position now filled by Captain Acheran in Space Marine 2. 42:18 Space Marine 1 released between September 6th and 9th (depending on region) 2011. Only two months later Skyrim launched. I imagine that that probably took a lot of attention away from Space Marine 1. It also only received mildly positive reviews as I recall. Beloved by existing Warhammer 40k fans, mostly only liked by people who were new. From what I remember it was also developer Relic's first attempt at a third person action game, they were mostly known for RTS games like Company of Heroes and the absolutely iconic, GOATed Dawn of War series of 40k games. Back then Relic were THE Warhammer 40k devs. Games Workshop were very selective about who they worked with and for a while Relic essentially had exclusive rights to make 40k games. So yeah, between a developer new to the genre, another massive game coming out shortly after it, middling reviews, and 40k simply being less popular than it is now, its no surprise that Space Marine 1 fell through the cracks for a lot of people.
@NoLiveking87Ай бұрын
Are you sure about the Lieutenant/Primaris thing? I mean, maybe it is because I'm German, but even if there wasn't such a rank in the editions right before the latest one's, I could have sworn that that rank was a thing in older codices of my youth (3rd or 4th edition)
@kingkong381Ай бұрын

1:44:00 - Wait until you get a tad farther in Helsreach. Then you get to see the REALLY big ones. 1:45:23 - The Inquisitors are technically outside of the normal Imperial command structure. Their original remit came directly from The Emperor Himself and they have full authority to use any Imperial resources they require. Only The Emperor, the Custodes, and the High Lords of Terra are above the Inquisitors. 1:51:12 - Although there ARE techniques to artificially stimulate human growth other than Space Marine conversion, it's more likely that Drogan just looks bigger because of his power armor. 2:03:29 - FINALLY!! 2 hours in and he FINALLY Executes something!! 2:34:40 - Your problem is you're just rushing headlong into mobz of Elite orks. These aren't like grots or boyz that you can take down with one or two swings of your power axe. You need to think with these guys. Thin them out at range first. Use grenades to stun them. And for Emperor's sake, don't go for Executions while you're surrounded. The other boyz are carving you to pieces during the animation. 3:55:00 - Second Company. Space Marine chapters are divided into 10 Companies, each lead by a Captain. Typically the First Company is populated by veterans. They often lead squads from other companies, but they also are the warriors entrusted with Terminator Armor. Companies 2-5 are the Battle Companies, and are made predominantly of Tactical Marines (Marines equipped for tactical flexibility) with support from a couple Assault Squads (close fighting experts) and Devastator Squads (Heavy Weapons specialists). Companies 6 and 7 are Tactical companies (all Tactical Squads), 8 is the Assault Company, and 9 is the Devastator company. 10th Company is the Scout Company, where neophyte Space Marines earn their battlefield experience as their new organs take hold. The reforms made since the return of Guilliman have changed things a bit, but the basic philosophy remains the same. At the time of this game, Titus is the captain of Second Company. After the events of this game, the role went to the canon leader of the company, Cato Sicarius. 4:00:50 - Nemeroth isn't a Primarch. He's just a Chaos Space Marine Lord in Terminator Armor. All things being equal, he and Titus are on the same level. As for the ork Warboss, he wouldn't care if Nemeroth WAS a Primarch. He'd still be a good fight. 4:02:53 - Just so you know, these are Bloodletters, the foot soldiers of Khorne. It's a _little_ weird having Khorne demons as the favored tool of a 'Chaos Sorcerer,' but it's not completely unheard of. 4:04:29 - You'd think Khorne would love the Orks, but they actually frustrate him. Orks don't care about the slaughter and the carnage and destruction of war. All they want is a good scrap. They love the fight itself, and that is _not_ what Khorne is about. 4:07:23 - Using a warp-based power source to start up a Titan? Uurgh...that straying dangerously close to some Dark Mechanicum bulls@#$ (but then, psi-titans were a thing in 30K). 4:13:00 - Leandros needs to expand his reading list beyond The Codex. Maybe try some Gideon Ravenor? _The Spheres of Longing?_ "Chaos claims the unwary or the incomplete. A true man may flinch away its embrace, if he is stalwart, and he girds his soul with the armour of contempt.” 4:16:45 - How does it feel to be chopping into power armor with more inside than a handful of dust? 5:07:07 - I guess Nemeroth has more than Bloodletters at his disposal. That is a Bloat Drone, a war machine used by followers of Nurgle. 5:43:48 - BLOOD RAVENS?!?!? Now THERE'S a shout-out! (Watch your pockets.) You SEEM excited enough to know, but just in case, the Blood Ravens are the Space Marine chapter you play during the Dawn of War games, the first critically successful 40K video games. Before the games, the Blood Ravens only existed as a name on a list of Space Marine chapters. Their lore was completely developed for the games. BTW, you need to react to the opening cinematic of Dawn of War. It's the first ever official 40K animation. The director of this game has said that it was his intention to make a trilogy. The second game would have followed Titus as he proved his honor and the third would have seen him rejoining the Ultramarines and possibly even being given the leadership of a band new Space Marine chapter in the end. But of course, the studio went bankrupt and those visions never came to pass. Even the most devoted of us were giving up on ever seeing a sequel...until the 2021 VGAs. Now that you've played Space Marine 1, you need to play Boltgun. It's an indie-made boomer-shooter inspired by this game. It looks like old-school Doom with a coat of 40K paint (Nuln Oil, anyone?) and is written as a spin-off of Space Marine 1.

To fill in the blanks between this game and SM2 Titus was tortured by that inquisitor but never broke. So that inquisitor locked Titus in stasis with other marines, only for that inquisitor to get possessed by a demon. After the inquisitor’s death the inquisition found Titus and other space marines in stasis with questionable accounts, so they were added to the Deathwatch. For give you a more completed prospective after Space Marine Titus was interrogated and tortured by Thrax for a century but was always found pure from all contamination. One day, during a mission against chaos marines Thrax was possessed by a deamon and killed.After his death Titus was found in a stasis capsule in Thrax’s quarters along with other astartes. Titus and the other astartes were transported to a fortress of deathwatch for examination, and once again Titus was found pure. during this time Titus had believed he was repudiated from the chapter so he chose to give up the colors of ultramarine and become a black shield of deathwatch where he served for almost 100 years. Until during a mission he was mortally wounded escaping death only by the arrival of ultramarines who recognized him immediately and reinstated him in the second company of which he was once captain, besides making it a primaris, a new version of the normal space marine, with more organs, bigger and stronger than the old astartes now called first born. During space Marine 2 it is discovered that a fragment of the energy source of Drogan ended up in the hands of the mechanicus who secretly used it to create aurora , however chaos intervened manipulating nozrik and leuze for its purposes
@Fourger14Ай бұрын

The 2 on Leandros' shoulder is likely meant to be his squad marking. Many Space Marine chapters use colors and patterns on their armor to denote what company and squad they belong to and their basic tactical role. For instance, the Ultramarines use the trim color of their shoulderpads to indicate what company they belong to (gold is the second company, which is the "default" Ultramarines company Games Workshop uses when Ultramarines are involved in something) and roman numerals on their right shoulderpad over the top of a symbol that indicates their general role on the battlefield (there's separate symbols for heavy weapons specialists, close assault specialists, etc.)

To answer your lieutenant question. Originally it's a french word from the high middle ages, although it is spelt lieutenant, the original and true pronunciation is Leftenant. It is also the way the brit's say it and being a brit franchise I guess the devs kept it. Funnily enough this is only used for the army and the airforce. The senior service (navy) uses the Lootenant pronunciation. So go figure? As for Titus' mental state, what you have to understand is that in the first game, Titus is pretty much newly promoted to captain. And, he's basically just how any good space marine is. As you work your way through the game, you'll see just how much he goes through, and then of course being F***ed over by a brother and then "interrorgated" by a corrupt inquisitor for a few decades, before being (from his point of view) forgotten by his brothers and left to rot in penance with the deathwatch as a black shield. I think anyone would be a little guarded and down on humanity after that. Your reaction to the titan was awesome hahaha. But that one is only the second largest and if you think that's big, wait until you get to the Imperator titan in Helsreach, that one's even bigger and in the theory the biggest of the titan classes. Below the Warlord is the Reaver, then the smallest is the Warhound, which is a scout titan, below those are the Knights. I'm glad you liked the game though, it really is a classic.

THIS is why you're my favorite react channel. I'm so glad you got through the first game before the ending of the second. Also, after the ending of this game, that powertripping Inquisitor physically tortured Titus for decades for his sick pleasure. Titus was only able to become a Blackshield in the Deathwatch after that Inquisitor died. He's more severe in the second game due to his trauma response. His arc in the second game is about mentally regaining his trust in his brothers and healing from his trauma as best he can. "Space marines are human, afterall." Oh, and about the helmets. The reason you can put them on in the sequel is because there were mods for the first game for it, so they knew we wanted that option.

Fun fact: The Blood Ravens have a reputation of being thieves and stealing anything that isnt bolted down. Not because of anything explicitly stated in the lore, but because in their own videogames, the Dawn of War series, they have access to items and treasure from other Space Marine chapters without any real explanation. It was most likely done for gameplay reasons and fun lore references, but since the games are considered canon, we have to asume that they really got their hands on ancient treasures and holy reliques one way or another.

Right off the bat, enacting some rightous purging, on the Greenskin tide. DA ORKS!!! 20:00 Lieutenant is pernounced differently because GW is a British company. But in 40k terms of lore I think humanities terming of words is changed. For example the What's left of France is now referred to as "the Franc". Obviously the Imperiam calls Earth, "Holy Terra" now. English language is now referred to as "Low-Gothic". 1:20:42 Whaaat? Feels like gears of war? Pffffffffttt, no waaay. Games workshop has never stolen from another IP before ;) 1:54:33 First time encountering an Ork psycher, also known as a "Weird boy". Hilariously if they absorb too much warp energy then their head and any ork near them will explode. 3:55:17 The roman 2 is meant for the Ultramarines 2nd Company, not the 2nd lost Legion. 4:56:23 Those were "Fetid Bloat Drones". Basically Nergle's Airforce.

Also in addition to “Low-Gothic”, there is High-Gothic which is basically Latin, perhaps it goes back to the fact that long ago the British before World War II studied Italian they considered it the refined language.

Great job brother!!! P.S. Now the ending of Space Marine 2 will be x40K better! (Great that you decided to complete the first part of Space Marine before finishing SP2) P.P.S. (As a reminder) The power source was repaired in Space Marine 2 and used for the Aurora (Mechanicum). And to hell with Leandros! (The Codex Astartes states that no one should survive the warp's touch that Titus dealt with. Leandros reported Titus, and Inquisitor Thrax captured him. Our captain was held by the Inquisition for about 100 years. Later, he was sent to serve in the Deathwatch for 100 years as a Black Shield (with his chapter insignia concealed), as a penitent member of the Deathwatch - Users Lord-Phantom and filiagg9393 wrote about it). P.P.P.S. Blood Ravens - Aurelian Crusade - Down of War 2!

4:02:00 Nemeroth is just wearing Terminator Armor. That is essentially a heavy, extremely rare suit of armor used by only some elite Space Marines. You could compare it to it's Primaris equivalent, Gravis Pattern Armor, like the one Lord Calgar wearers in Space Marine 2. Oh... And Nemeroth is probably really juiced up by Chaos.

The fact that Grimskull is still alive suggests that he actually won that fight, and forced Nemeroth to flee. Grimskull certainly wouldn't have run from a fight.

In case you want to know what happen between SM1 and SM2, The inquisitor that capture Titus turn out to be evil and love to torture Space Marine for fun (Titus become one of his victim). After a few decades, other Inquisition was able to find out about this and the evil inquisitor was dealt with and his asset were given to other inquisitor. This is where Titus was properly investigated and ultimately put into a Deathwatch (Inquisition anti-xenos specialist task group) and given a new name Nallus as a Black Sheild (someone who has no Chapter) The gap between SM1 and SM2 was 200 years. In SM2 , Titus said he serve Deathwatch for 100 years, which mean he was torture by the evil inquisitor for 100 years. Throughout those 200 years, Chapter Master Celgar never stop requesting the inquisition to return Titus back. But this request was ignored and the ultramarine never knew what happened to Titus or is he even alive During SM2 tutorial, Ultramarines Chief Libarian, Tigurius (who once serve together with Titus) was able to detect his presence nearby on the planet. This is how the Ultramarine were able find and save Titus by the of SM2 tutorial. Celgar immediate reinstate Titus back into the Ultramarine and it seem the Inqisitionis is okay with it because they themselves never find any hint of corruption from Titus through out those 200 years Edit: spelling

Oh so many memories, yeah, SM is a great underrated gem, that's why many of us feel so down believing we would never have a sequel, or anything close, and the same thing applies to why are we now so happy of having received a proper, awesome, and very successful sequel. Also, to answer your question, I think the fact that Titus was turtured for over a 100 years probably is what make him a little bitter haha. Thanks for giving this awesome game visibility.
@milkmilk807Ай бұрын
08:00 Yes and no. No one in 40k speaks English as-is. The canon language of the Imperium is Gothic, which is divided into High and Low Gothic, with High being the literary and high-society speech and low being the common informal variant. Orcs do speak their own language *in canon*, but mostly, they're represented in 40k *to us* as speaking in the most stereotypical British hooligan accent there is, since Games Workshop being a British company thought it was funny. HOWEVER, even though they have their own language, orcs are scarily intelligent and adaptable, so it's absolutely possible that they can learn and speak some form of Low Gothic just to scream at you. For fun. There is actually an orc in canon that learned to speak High Gothic just to speak with a human Commissar and challenge him personally. His name is Ghazghkull Thrakka and he is awesome.

6:24:54 when the game released, it had to compete with Gears of War 3 (ironically) that same month along with Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 and Skyrim later in November. Seventh Gen video games, especially shooters, had a very samey feel to them in terms of graphics and gameplay, so Space Marine 1 didn't stand out much to begin with unless you were already a 40k fan. The original dev team apparently had a plans for a trilogy but got shelved 'cause of lackluster sales, and it was only when 40k's popularity began to boom in the last few years with fan animations, and a few actual good games did Space Marine get a proper sequel. Dunno where the series is gonna head from here on out, but I guess we'll see.

6:20:45 It strikes me that people hate Leandros so much when he is right in his suspicions, other chapters or organizations within the imperium would have burned Titus alive for much less. The real mistake here is involving the Inquisition instead of informing a brother chaplin.
@austinstewart7601Ай бұрын
I think Leandros has every right to be suspicious of Titus. By the end of Space Marine 2, Titus has: - Shown an unusual resistance to the warp. - The Inquisitor charged with interrogating him fell to chaos shortly after taking him in. - Was caught up in a "Thosand Suns" incursion. - Briefly traveled into a pocket dimension in the warp to face a Chaos Sorcerer and "Lord of change," a feat that even a chapter master would struggle with. I'm with Leandros on this one. Something is off. Chaos seems to follow Titus wherever he goes.

@@austinstewart7601 I think Titus is blessed by the emperor, but it wouldn't be the first time someone receives gifts from the emperor himself and the inquisition thinks it's a plot of chaos *cough cough starchild*
@Hopper205028 күн бұрын
The problem is not the suspicion of Corruption towards Titus... the problem is that Leandros wants to solve everything as the Codex Astartes dictates, which ends up being counterproductive.

@@Hopper2050 c'mon, there are entire chapters that are worse with the Codex and venerate it religiously, black consuls and red scorpions come to my mind now, Leandros is only hated because he is a character in a video game and people don't have to read a book to know him
