The Unforgiven songs are about James Hetfield and his struggles due to the environment he was raised in. A very strict Christian home that did not believe in medicine or anything because God would take care of it. Due to that he watched his mother die of cancer after his father had already left the family. He's not talking about growing old either. The guy in this first Unforgiven isn't old nor grows old in the song. It's about the feeling of being young (James was a pretty young guy when he wrote this, early thirties tops) but feeling like your life is over. That the world has battered you so bad that you are, inside, an old man. That's why he says the lyrics "that old man here is me". He means from the years of mental abuse, both in his childhood and what he's done to himself, have turned him into a bitter old man. James Hetfield is The Unforgiven.

Come lay beside me This won't hurt, I swear She loves me not, she loves me still But she'll never love again She laid beside me but she'll be there when I'm gone Black heart scarring darker still Yes, she'll be there when I'm gone Yes, she'll be there when I'm gone Dead sure she'll be there What I've felt, what I've known Turn the pages, turn the stone Behind the door, should I open it for you? I feel like there's a lot of underrated Metallica songs. I hate it when people automatically think of nothing but heavy metal when they hear or see the word "Metallica". I'm a Metallica fan, and I love their heavier songs like "Master of Puppets", "Enter Sandman", and all those other heavy and fast songs, but I also like their slower and softer songs too like this one, "Nothing Else Matters", and "Fade to Black". It's because these songs have true meanings, and they prove that Hetfield can deliver beautiful tone when he sings too, not just singing in his metal voice all the time!

[Verse 1] Lay beside me, tell me what they've done Speak the words I want to hear, to make my demons run The door is locked now, but it's open if you're true If you can understand the me, then I can understand the you Lay beside me, under wicked sky Through black of day, dark of night, we share this paralyze The door cracks open, but there's no sun shining through Black heart scarring darker still, but there's no sun shining through No, there's no sun shining through No, there's no sun shining... [Chorus] What I've felt, what I've known Turn the pages, turn the stone Behind the door, should I open it for you? Yeah! What I've felt, what I've known Sick and tired, I stand alone Could you be there, because I'm the one who waits for you Or are you unforgiven too? [Verse 2] Come lay beside me, this won't hurt I swear She loves me not, she loves me still, but she'll never love again She lay beside me, But she'll be there when I'm gone Black heart scarring darker still, yes she'll be there when I'm gone Yes, she'll be there when I'm gone Dead sure she'll be there... [Chorus] What I've felt, what I've known Turn the pages, turn the stone Behind the door, should I open it for you? Yeah! What I've felt, what I've known Sick and tired, I stand alone Could you be there, because I'm the one who waits for you Or are you unforgiven too? [Guitar Solo] [Verse 3] Lay beside me, tell me what I've done The door is closed, so are your eyes But now I see the sun, now I see the sun Yes, now I see it... [Chorus] What I've felt, what I've known Turn the pages, turn the stone Behind the door, should I open it for you? Yeah! What I've felt, what I've known So sick and tired, I stand alone Could you be there Because I'm the one who waits, the one who waits for you, oh [Chorus] What I've felt, what I've known Turn the pages, turn the stone Behind the door, should I open it for you? (So I dub thee Unforgiven) [Bridge] What I've felt... Oh, what I've known... I take this key (never free...) And I bury it (never me...) in you Because you're unforgiven too [Outro] Never free Never me Because you're unforgiven too Oh, oh, oh

I became a Metallica fan in 86 when I was twelve. In 99 when i was 25 I met a young woman who had gotten in to Metallica in the late 90s and they were her favorite group. It was a long distance relationship, she was the love of my life. One of my favorite memories was when i got the chance in 2000 to go visit her, she lived on the other side of the country, I'm East Coast, she was West, I brought Master of Puppets with me and introduced her to Orion and the Metallica I had fallen in love with. Then in 2001 I went to see her again and she broke my heart. Told me when i got there it was over. Turned me around and put me back on a plane home the next day. I was never a fan of Reload and just yesterday I heard this on Lithium on Sirius and realized 19 years later how relevant the lyrics are. I'm still trying to find the sun and bury the key and forgive. I don't know why it took me this long to connect with this song out of all the others in their catalogue. But better late than never. God I can feel every line in this song.

Mate, i know how you feel.... with a few of my ex's - i feel exactly the same, like there's no proper closure. Just "Yep, we're done now P off!!" And all you can keep thinking is what the hell did i do wrong? Sometimes i wish i could go back and change events to keep the relationship going. But then you need to also remember this "Things happen for a reason - if a relationship is meant to end, it's because you've learnt the lesson needed in life or a better one is around the corner"

@@justanordinaryguy6882 Definitely, at least here in Florida, they used to play old Metallica on the classic rock station and newer Metallica on the modern rock station. @@justanordinaryguy6882 That's actually really cool to hear that Metallica is played in Malaysia at all, I never would've guessed. Metal music gets alot of backlash especially in very religious countries, so I'm glad to hear they get radio play at all. I wonder what it's like for your northern neighbors in Indonesia, I've heard their president is a metal head and he loves Metallica! It’s because it uses a b-bender guitar so it’s difficult to play properly I think
@genat63954 жыл бұрын
They’ve always said it is one of the hardest of the songs to play. Heard hetfield in two interviews say it. They can never master it live the way they want

@@oless8581 thanks for the insight! I hope they play it someday.

Many times I wanted to blow my brains out while listening to this song. I was drowning in alcohol drinking two handles of Greygoose vodka each day, sitting in a wheelchair while recovering from a catastrophic CBR 1000 rrR sp Fireblade sport bike into a concrete wall event. Thankfully, by the grace of God, I was able to kick the booze and made a 100% recovery and I’m walking today. I’ll have three years of sobriety next month. It sure is nice to listen to this song under different circumstances, because this song touched me in a special way.

I started listening to Metallica after I got expelled from high school. This song helped me get through the worst of time. Luckily, my expulsion was reconsidered and I got back. All thanks to Metallica.
