I've been a believer since 2002 but backslid a lot especially years ago. I went through a lot of spiritual warfare in the form of debilitating depression and daily panic attacks. However I've never experienced as much pushback from the enemy as I have since being led to Dr. Heiser's teachings. The Bible has never made more sense to me. Thank you for your care in teaching His word the way it is and not trying to make it less "uncomfortable" like so many others do.

This man opened up so much in the bible for me personally! He's opened my mind to concepts I never knew of. I feel that today I understand so many more narratives and what actually went on and the why of these things. Our history with God Almighty and his divine family is overtly supernatural. It blows my mind to know that Angels have sinned so grievously and wrought so much havoc and chaos. Literal Giants on the earth and so much more!

Watching this just gave me a epiphany. If the snake is a representative of pagan worship... Is it that possible there is a line of thought that Adam and eve were becoming idolatrous. Christ crushes the gods underfoot. He crushes the serpent. The serpent crawls and eats dirt. Hm? Interesting. I've heard theory that Adam and eve were a allegory for men in general

Absolutely makes sense, since the account of the creation was written by Moses for the Israelites after coming out of Egypt. What better example of imagery for an adversary, than a serpent the likeness of that of the headdress worn by their oppressor Pharoah.

The serpent like creature in the garden it's always made me think that the setan was a Seraphim. I have since learned that he is called the covering cherub. Thank you so much for this lecture-excerpt. I've been pondering for several years now that Christians allowed themselves to be intimidated by the philosophers of Rationalism and the Enlightenment. Because they accused the Bible of being irrational, many Christian leaders and thinkers began using the tools of Rationalism and the Enlightenment, forcing the Bible into a "modern," and literalistic framework. Letting the Bible speak in its original context and framework liberates it from an abundance of stupid ideas. Again, thank you!!!

I think it's really pretty obvious what happened in the garden. Satan here was a beautiful being (as described in Ezekiel 28) that appeared to Adam and Eve, that's why they were comfortable talking with him. The "snake" description fits his spritual character as a sly deceitful being .....the same way we would describe an enemy today as a snake.....someone who deceives or goes behind your back without you knowing.

Here is my question: In Genesis 3:14 the Lord curses the serpent "above all cattle" and "beast of the field" and says "upon thy belly shalt go" and eat dust. This verse seems to compare the serpent to other animals and also how can a divine being eat dust and be cursed to move on a physical belly? Let me say that I think Dr Heiser does EXCELLENT work I just need someone to help me understand this. Thanks.

The language being used here is an idiom, a type of cultural metaphor that would've been easily & well recognized & understood by the Ancient Israelites. It describes being struck down & brought low, down to the dust of the Earth & into the Grave, this is part of the Prophecy regarding the ultimate Judgment & end for this Divine Rebel, the Nachash. The same type of reference is echoed using Poetic language in Isaiah 14, a metaphor that paints a picture of the ultimate end of this Evil entity who for a Time was given Dominion over the Earth & those dwelling upon it through the trickery & Deceptive temptation it employed on Adam & Eve. The Lord hath broken the staff of the wicked, and the sceptre of the rulers. 6 He who smote the people in wrath with a continual stroke, he that ruled the nations in anger, is persecuted, and none hindereth. 7 The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet: they break forth into singing. 8 Yea, the fir trees rejoice at thee, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us. 9 Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations. 10 All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us? 11 Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee. 12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. 16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; 17 That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners? 18 All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house. 19 But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet. 20 Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never be renowned. Isaiah 14:5-20

Thanks @Alligator man for the video and @Ravenwolf Walters I think the answer does lie in idioms or figure of speech. I'm realizing how ancient people talked compared to how we talk nowadays. For example Im an African American who grew up in the south and after a good meal people would literally say to the cook "you put your foot in this." If somebody would read that phrase a thousand years from now they may think black people in the south used their feet to make food! Also I read 25 instances of the word serpent in the the pyramid texts and the spells they cast on serpents in the underworld and I get the same feel as in Genesis. Heiser is right about getting your mind to think in the context and symbolism of ancient people.

Great video! I also think that Ezekiel 28:11-19 is speaking about this very situation before satans fall. I realize that Ezekiel is speaking about the King of Tyre however, I think it is very obvious that Ezekiel is relating the king of Tyre to satans fall. Obviously, the king is not a guardian cherubim, nor was the king in Eden the garden of God. So I think its quite obvious that this is relating to the event that took place before the garden of eden which lead to satan's down fall.

@medleysa
@medleysa 4 жыл бұрын
Crawling on your belly = subdued, set lower than other creation Eating dust = a state of humiliation Remember that the Serpent was craftier than any beast at the beginning of Chapter 3. Now it’s cursed into a place of humility. Most likely these are idioms of humiliation. Man was formed from dust; the least important material in creation used to make the image of God. Now the serpent is doomed to consume only that unimportant material, struck lower than the humans from which it was made.

Dust= earth/horizon. He can no longer have place in the heaven as he is bounded to earth, yet his nature is eating the earth he is bound to , hence destroying himself alongside it, and in case you don't notice, humanity is created from earth, but not for earth. Should we not grow in every area towards the Messiah, we will revert to merely dust and be eaten along. That's how I interpret it.

Dr. Heiser, this also brings up the question of why God will then curse the serpent if it was a divine being disguised as the serpent. A talking or walking snake wouldn't be strange since we don't know the form of the snake then. Our anachronism is what would make such reality incomprehensible.
@thetheoreticaltheologian2458

The thing I would say as to why we would think that the deceiving serpent in Gen. 3 is because God says to the serpent that it is basically the most cursed being which is what satan is “the most cursed being”. It doesn’t necessarily have to say satan in order for it to be but it can have a word that symbolizes him.

So what do you do with Jubilees 3:27-31? "And on that day on which Adam went forth from the Garden, he offered as a sweet savour an offering, frankincense, galbanum, and stacte, and spices in the morning with the 28 rising of the sun from the day when he covered his shame. And on that day was closed the mouth of all beasts, and of cattle, and of birds, and of whatever walks, and of whatever moves, so that they could no longer speak: for they had all spoken one with another with one lip and with one tongue. 29 And He sent out of the Garden of Eden all flesh that was in the Garden of Eden, and all flesh was scattered according to its kinds, and according to its types unto the places which had been created 30 for them. And to Adam alone did He give (the wherewithal) to cover his shame, of all the beasts and 31 cattle. " Why would God have cursed the entire snake kind if an actual snake was not somehow involved? I agree that the naqash is a rebellious elohim; we know that John IS correct in Revelation 12-that the being later personified as Satan was there directing the encounter, even though the word satan is not in the text. But I'm not sure I can completely agree that no literal, physical snake was somehow involved. Furthermore, Dr. Heiser, I'm interested in how you reconcile the encounter with the naqash in Genesis 3 with the Watchers narrative? How does it relate? Was the naqash Semijaza (the leader of all the Watchers), Azazel, or was it truly Gadreel in the Book of Enoch Chapter 69:6 (or was this perhaps a different seduction)? I'm asking not as a criticism, but because I'm truly interested to know.

There are a lot of things we don't understand with certainty about this text. But one thing we do know with certainty is that the snake is one of the "beasts of the field" which was brought to Adam by God. Adam named the snake a "snake," and in his turn Adam found him unsuitable to be his partner in the task of keeping the garden. We read the aforementioned details in the first part of the story (what today is numbered Genesis 2:18-20). The snake CANNOT be a supernatural creature, as the text says specifically that it is the wisest of "the beasts of the field." In the Hebrew, the play on words here is something like this: the snake (himself naturally "naked" in appearance and rumored to be immortal through the renewal of is naked skin by ancients) is the creature to which things "are exposed" (often translated, "crafty"). The man and his wife are "exposed," but don't "know" enough yet to be ashamed of their condition. In their state of "not knowing," these two will tend the garden. When the couple have their "eyes opened," they discover what God and the snake "knew" all along, that the man and his woman can "know" one another when their state is "exposed." Once their condition is "known" to them, offspring will follow and their job description and place of employment will have to be amended. In other ancient texts, the tree of knowledge and/or immortality is associated with a winged serpent called a "seraph." This word has ideas of "fire" and "flying" and "hissing" in its various forms. The word for "snake" derives from "fire" and "burning (sensation)." Isaiah combines the two words into a single description of a six-winged serpent who attends Yahweh in Isaiah's vision (chapter 6). It may be that in earlier versions of the biblical story, the snake was more clearly identified with a winged animal which God punishes by stripping him of his wings and forcing him to crawl on the ground from that time forward. That the Genesis story is developed from earlier Mesopotamian tales featuring a seraph is highly probable; that the Genesis writer (J) still had a seraph in mind in his own iteration of the tale is possible but uncertain.

Hebrew N-Ch-Sh refers to the verb to Hiss and/or to Whisper. Serpents make hissing noises, so a serpent can be termed a 'nachash' . . . but so, too, can a Man (or manlike being) who whispers. The Hebrew language doesn't distinguish between hissing and whispering, the way the English language does. The way I see it, the Whisperer is cursed for 'tempting' Eve by being transformed into a literal serpent -- made to become not just a Whisperer but now a Hisser. This transformation is similar to the stories Ovid tells in his METAMORPHOSES, like how Daphne becomes the laurel tree or how Arachne becomes the spider. The Whisperer becomes the Hisser -- and the same word (in Hebrew) is used for both.

We also have to understand that simply because we do see strange manifestations of animal like divine beings now, that such did not occur in time past. When the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord, she lay down under Balaam, so Balaam was angry and he struck the donkey [a third time] with his staff. And the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you that you have struck me these three times?” Then Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have made a mockery of me! If there had been a sword in my hand, I would have killed you by now!” The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey on which you have ridden all your life until this day? Have I ever been accustomed to do so to you?” And he said, “No.” Numbers 22:27‭-‬30 AMP

I agree, but... my only question is: what about books like Jubilees? I definitely don’t regard it as scripture. (Reading it seems like Genesis fan fiction) However, it does say that all the animals spoke and then stopped after the serpent incident. Doesn’t a book like this truly put you into the mind of the ancients? Looking at it as fanfic definitely does make it make sense to me in my head, because they wouldn’t try to come up with careful interpretations, but creative ones.
@stevenvelez1717
@stevenvelez1717 4 жыл бұрын
That way of looking at it satisfies me, honestly. Jubilees makes sure to have all the major details from Genesis then runs wild with extra details. Like the 1000 years is a day, and explaining that Adam didn’t reach a thousand years of life, so God was right. Sounds like an ancient interpretation of Genesis. Fanfic definitely does get creative and reading it through that lens makes sense to me.

Exactly. So this guy has to make up or at least find something to explain the donkey talking. "based on how the ancients would have read about a donkey talking.... the ancients knew donkeys don't talk.. This isn't normal.. the gods must be up to something.." Basically according to this guy, writings of people a few thousand years later than when the event took place determine what actually took place.

The bible interprets it's self in simplicity. Several places God calls his children trees( we have a trunk and limbs ). The trees in the garden were the One who would become Jesus the Christ, and Lucifer( "that old dragon", " the adversary", "serpent". Serpent IN the tree refers to Lucifer's intentions,mind,character, in his body(tree). God Himself says He is like a giant fir tree. Jesus the tree of life. Kings under judgement- trees cut down. King's children- branches/twigs. Trees of the earth- humanity.

Here's my problem with your assumptions. First, the world in which Adam lived is unknown to us. How different was a sinless world from the world of today in which the power of the judgments of God produced the separation of Pangea and the flood of Noah and the resulting localized "ice ages" etc? Is it possible that when the Bible refers to the serpent as "more cunning" than any other wild creatures in the earth that an actual physical creature is present? One which did not look anything like a snake winding through the branches of the forbidden tree? Of course, it is. So, later in the scriptures, it is revealed that the Nahash was either influencing the speech of this creature or speaking directly through it exactly as the Nahash was speaking through Peter and earned a direct rebuke from Jesus for presuming to take the lead in Jesus' earthly mission. Why would it be impossible to believe that animals once spoke? "Then the LORD opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, "What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?"" - Num 22:28 NKJV The word "opened" is "pāṯaḥ" which literally means "to loosen." This was not a creative miracle. This is a loosening of something presumed to have been restrained. Is it possible, rhetorical of course, that God chose to shut down speech through animals after the fall of man? God knew that because of sin men would begin to curse Him. Perhaps, God didn't want to deal with the animals cursing also and so, by shutting down their speech capacity, He could focus on what was ultimately important - man.

Here is a problem with your assumption. Nowhere in the Bible did it mention that animals could talk or that it was normal. We know it never happened because the Bible never mention it. The book of Jubilee isn’t canon. The Bible itself never said that animals mouths were shut or that they use to spoke. That donkey spoke because God made it spoke. The Bible didn’t say the devil cause the snake to speak. It was a snake like being. Not an actual snake.

@@Bunni504 To speak rudely, as you speak, here's the problem with your assumption. "We know it never happened because the Bible never mention it." This is an argument from darkness. There are trillions of things the bible never mentions that have indeed happened. You completely ignore Num 22:28 cited above. The donkey spoke. In fossil records, there are more than one species of serpent that has "vestigial" vocal cords. The Nahash, serpent in Hebrew, we are told was the "anointed cherub." The Cherubim are a subset of the angelic beings that are known as fiery, feathery, flying serpents that are of the throne guardian class of angels. It is unfortunate that you are not acquainted with this very well-known information.

My 2 cents: The serpent had legs before God made him to crawl on his belly, (and that may not have been instantaneous) In Hebrew serpent also meant to "hiss". Lizards, crocks, maybe dino's all "hiss". An angel spoke through a donkey in the old testament, and through other objects like the burning bush, whirlwind etc.. So I don't see any problem with a super natural being speaking through something. I once heard a voice talk to me through a electric fan, but I was on a powerful hallucinate at the time. Which doesn't mean the fan wasn't talking, just that others couldn't hear it. Anyway this atheist protest about talking snakes is just more, "swallowing camels and choking on gnats." At least in my estimation.

Or, perhaps more simply, the ancient people understood *what the story was trying to tell them*. These myths weren't - and weren't meant to be - taken literally. A deeper meaning is conveyed through story and symbolism and imagery. To a large degree I think we've lost that in our modern, scientific, world (and its polar opposite - literalist religiosity). "Either it's true and factual, or it's meaningless." They miss the point. The point isn't the story, the point is what the story is trying to teach you. "The menu isn't the meal" so to speak. Perhaps ancient people were ahead of us in that kind of understanding and communication.

@@aliasindadip I've never known anyone to mention that about it still being able and allowed to talk, good point and observation. I think the story has to do with our ability and inclination to talk ourselves into doing what we strongly desire to do even if we know or believe it is wrong, and also to talk others into things. We can easily justify our choices and pass the blame. That inner voice that we debate with from time to time can be very persuasive and enticing. Some refer to that as the Devil inside. So, that inner and adversarial voice will likely always be there to some degree. Think of it as two of you in one head competing for control or dominance when balance or harmony is better than enmity or conflict. The more we give in to that voice, the more powerful it becomes.

(15 September 2024) Dr. Heiser noted that Eden' serpent was not a simple snake, it was a supernatural being! He was right! But, for the wrong reason! Genesis 1-11, according to some scholars, is in response to, and in refutation of, ANCIENT Sumerian accounts of WHY MAN DOES NOT POSSESS IMMORTALITY! The Sumerian account is called by scholars, Adapa and the South Wind. This account was found in the archives of pharaoh Akhen-Aton, at his capital, in Egypt, in Babylonian script. Adapa is warned by his god E-A of Eridu not to consume the bread of death or water of death to be offered him by Anu in heaven, or he will die! When Nin-gish-zida on behalf of Anu, offers Adapa the said items, Adapa refuses to consume them, obeying E-A's warning! Anu laughs when he realizes Adapa will not consume the bread of life and water of life, believing they are the food of death. So, Man lost out on obtaining immortality because he obeyed his lying god, E-A of Eridu! Genesis' author is refuting this Sumerian account of why man is not immortal! Man (Adam and Eve) DISOBEYED GOD'S WARNING AND ATE THE FORBIDDEN FOOD! So, where is Eden's Serpent in the Adapa and South wind account? Nin-gish-zida is a gate guard at Anu's heavenly abode. On Anu's behalf, Nin-gishzida urged on Adapa the food conferring immortality. In art, Nin-gishzida is portrayed as a human-being, bearded, two hands, human legs and feet. From his two shoulders arise two heads of Serpent-dragons. Nin-gish-zida in art, is also portrayed as a Serpent-dragon with four feet, two wings, two horns, scaly body and tail. Ningishzida LOOSES HIS TWO HUMAN FEET WHEN HE TAKSE ON THE FORM OF A SERPENT DRAGON! WHEN TAKING ON A HUMAN FORM, THE SERPENT-DRAGON LOOSES ITS FOUR FEET, TAKING ON TWO HUMAN FEET! Nin-gish-zida is at home in three realms: (1) Edin the Under World. (2) Edin on the Esarth's surface (today's Iraq). (3) In Heaven, as Anu's gate guard. In the Bible Satan is at home in three realms, the Earth, Hell, and Heaven (cf. the book of Revelation). Surprisingly, not many scholars are aware of all this!
