You just simply buy cars you can afford. Jeep wranglers are good looking toys, they don’t loose value as much as other light trucks do. Especially, if you made modifications to it. You can buy faster cars, but with a Jeep you can’t get to where the Wrangler will. Amazing for the beach, a monster in the snow, made for the mud.

Worth noting there’s actually 2 versions of both the pentastar and the 2.0T. The only 2.0T with eTorque is available on the Sahara. If you choose the 2.0T on Sport or Rubicon it does not come with eTorque. eTorque can also be added to the pentastar (on all models I believe). In previous years all 2.0T came with eTorque and the pentastar was not available with eTorque. For 2020 there’s technically 5 engine options considering above including the new diesel.

I have to say, I was a lot more enthusiastic about our JL before the rear window exploded out the back from what I truly believe was an overheating rear defroster (the wire was melted) in 25 degree weather. Jeep refused to cover it, saying they were “not aware of the problem.” Even a short search on the internet surfaced several examples of back windows breaking without obvious external cause and at least one other report of an overheating defroster leading to a blown out rear window. No very happy that it happened at all, but the fact that Jeep wouldn’t make good on it ($1300 so far and the defroster hasn’t been fixed yet) was the real disappointment. We’re also on the 3rd windshield (our cost), which already needs to be replaced. Clearly a known problem and I can live with that, but the rear window is a way bigger and scarier (just ask the kid who was sitting in back when it happened) issue. Not my first Jeep, but maybe the last.

Very well done review. However I think most folks especially in the Jeep community, don't give enough consideration to the selec trac option. To me it was the deciding factor between buying a Rubicon vs buying a Sahara. Fact is...I am not a serious rock crawler. The selec trac is not just a convenience thing it is a very useful unique feature with unique capabilities. In Full Time 4-wd you have basically a limited slip transfer case, witch is great for on road snowy, icy, rainy, conditions. No binding when you hit dry pavement patches. Then of course the transfer case has all of the other normal positions too, 2H, 4H, 4L, etc, all locked of course. To me this feature was more valuable than the Rubicons 4:1 ratio and axle lockers. I opted for the limited slip rear diff and plan to install a front diff aftermarket locker. The Rubi is always depicted as having the best 4wd system (cause of the ratio's and lockers) however depending on the applicable use, it is lacking when compared to the Sahara's optional selec trac system.

A stock Sport can handle the Rubicon. BrakeLock is like a 4-wheel TCS, and it's on all JLs. Diff-lockers and 4:1 tcase gears are available from the aftermarket. You don't have to buy an expensive Rubicon to have a capable offroader. I wheeled a stock CJ7 and a stock YJ for years without all the expensive and complicated Rubicon doodads and electronics. They were a blast, even without the $30K+ doodads. When the 1997 TJ Wrangler debuted in late 1995, base MSRP was under $10K US.

Not all wranglers hold their value like they used to. My wrangler pulls to the right and nobody, not even the dealers, have been able to resolve the problem. I did recently figure out that the jeep is not level, maybe due to the gas tank being full, which could be the reason for it pulling to the right. . Other than that, it's a good vehicle.

Do a buying guide to showcase whether higher trims and options are worth it compared to getting a base Jeep and upgrading parts yourself. Compare the cost, hastle, and quality of 3rd party parts (or used from a junk yard) compared to forking over $$$ for straight from factory.

How about a practical Wrangler vs Gladiator. How is the top off on the JT vs JL etc? You get to drive both. I currently have 2 wranglers one JL and a JK. Time for the JK to upgrade to one of these. The Wrangler is great but I keep looking at the JT partly for its towing. The Ram 2500 handles the big towing jobs. I hate the back seat in the JT as it doesn't fold flat in either configuration. Where does the dog sit? Goose gear maybe able to fix that. KZbin JT builds are rediculous. Everyone I have seen is over the top "overlander" or rock crawler with crap hanging all over them and 40 inch tires. Try parking that at Costco. I love the Gobi color on the JT. Also any word on a diesel JT release date? 29 mpg!

Since most people are not mechanics, instead of spending $1,000s of dollars on aftermarket parts and cost of labor, if they seriously want to go overlanding, camping and off-roading, the Rubicon makes sense: All of the aftermarket parts you want, and warranty, out of the box. The casual Jeeper instead can go to whichever model fits their lifestyle and budget.

Great video and review of the Wrangler. I didn’t realize body painted fenders are an option. I thought I had to get the Sahara, which I’d probably the model I’ll get. I thought I wanted the Sky top but sounds like the hardtop is a better option. Great job!

Evil Mofo - that sucks really that they have to mark things up like that. I live in Southern Alberta, Canada and the dealers may not move off of MSRP for certain models, but they don’t mark them up over retail. I was able to get a 2020 Vette for MSRP and they threw in a leather jacket and a couple of hats. Still waiting on it. I also bought a GT500 Mustang for MSRP. I again got a jacket and hats. (I see a personal theme here). I have resold the Vette to a friend for cost because I prefer the GT500. We will see if I regret that or not,,,,,,, I have a few other nice vehicles and found my wife’s limit when I wanted an enormous shop. I did get a shop, but no more cars, sighhhh, hahaha!

Dude the reason why we all get the four-cylinder with the eight speed automatic is because it’s our daily driver. Who wants to deal with a six speed manual when you’re sitting in traffic? That’s the other side of it sometimes it’s a lot more fun to be pushing your own gears but truth be told other times it gets pretty just that old and it’s like that Pennstar motor while it is quite reliable the 2 L motor has So much more balls iPhone even in the woods it tends to push a lot better when on trails Also the willies addition is very hard to find in a six...and I had to have the willys

I miss the old Willy's WWII Jeeps.......4 cylinder , 60 hp types. My grand dad had one ( Mil Surplus) made in 1942. He'd lay the windshield down and off he'd take me fishing as a boy in the 1970's. Grand dad's been gone 25 years, the jeep a tad longer...... Wish Jeep made a anniversary military style WWII Jeep , bet they'd sell tons of them......I'd buy one!

Firstly think TFL is great!Always wanted a Rubicon new design 2018-present.. Had to rent a car on a cold Canadian icy windy day so I rented a Wrangler 2019 Sahara 2.0 litre for a 6 hour Highway round trip.. One of the scariest rides I've ever driven, I would not recommend this vehicle for theses weather conditions and gas mileage was horrendous i would definately prefer the 3.0 liter Pentastar but don't think it would have helped.. Is the Rubicon a better ride than the Sahara?? I currently driver a Jeep Grand Cherokee 2014 Eco Diesel so I am a fan of Jeep ( note the diesel smells right through the cabin when using for long periods, hopefully the redesign for the Wrangler Eco diesel engine many issues are addressed cause they're were many, but great torque and gas mileage)..but the Wrangler had its purpose and is May be best suited in better climates been driving Jeep Grand Cherokee since 2011 first had the Hemi filling up with has every 4-5 days got rid of it for the Eco diesel. Would love a Wrangler Rubicon but not confident enough to pull the trigger.. Just my FYI thanks for the great reviews from your and your dad Tommy

LED tail lights are actually a safety feature. They turn on about 1/2 second faster than tungsten bulbs, which can save you from being rear-ended by the guy behind you. Old news, promoted by MB and others for that reason.

Great video. Watched a ton before finally purchasing my rubicon yesterday. I preferred the hardtop 3.6L, absolutely didn't want the 2.0L etorque engine, but wasn't opposed to the new non-etorque turbo 2.0L. My must have list included LED lights, cold weather group, tow group, steel bumpers, and 8.4" display (for the premium stereo and the off-road apps). It wasn't easy finding what I wanted in state, without other options that I didn't want. In the end it came down to accepting some other options without paying through the nose for them. I ended up with a new 2020 ocean blue rubicon with the new non-etorque 2.0L, which is fine for my use. It has all of the options on my must have list, but also has two options I would not have purchased because they are very pricey and not necessary - the sky active roof and the upgraded wheels. I bought this rubicon after a month of searching because of the price. It was $9k under msrp, which was lower than other rubicons that had most, but not all the must haves on the list. My only comment is about the upgraded wheels with the stock Falken Wildpeak tires. This vehicle wanders like mad on the highway. I didn't notice that on other rubicons I drove with the BFG AT's. I'm assuming the wandering is caused by the aggressive off-road tread of the Falkens? Tommy, maybe you could talk a little about what to expect from the tire choice.

Checked the cold tire pressure. They were all at 42 psi cold. Lowered them to 37 cold as the info listed inside the driver door specifies. Drives much better now. More like what I'd expect with those knobby tires. Steering input is very sensitive, but steady in a straight line. Dealer must not have set the proper pressure prior to delivery. Again, thanks for the help.

It's important to note that with the diesel upgrade, it includes upgrading both axles to dana 44s, similar to the Rubicon, but without lockers. This means that you can get a sport with diesel and be pretty close to a Rubicon on drivetrain, minus the lockers and lower range transfer case. Factory lockers are junk anyway, and you can buy aftermarket units that are much stronger.
@monserenergy700r

Almost. The rubicon does have a higher spline count front and rear. The diesel gearing is the same no matter what though. Also, the stock lockers on the JL are pretty bulletproof
@jondrew55

@@monserenergy700r Yes, the stock lockers are good. Unless you get the dreaded "Axel Locker Required Maintenance" light. I was fortunate it got covered on warranty. Seems the hall effect switches in the axels can get oil intrusion and go bad. The only fix is replacing the axel. Mine is a 2018 and as far as I know they have not fixed it yet on current models.

Does the sport Willy that has the same Rubicon shocks and something else that’s also equals a Rubicon. The next up Willy does it also have the LED lights also have the Rubicon extra on it?
