There's always so much going on around our property, that we don't always get to cover it all. This is the start of regular monthly updates so we don't leave any loose ends from subjects we cover, that are over a longer term than be covered in one show.

I like watching your farming life more than I did your sailing. You seem to be really enjoying it and now you got Mum and Bub. And you do know you can't treat your animals like pets. Farming life means producing food.

When I was young and on the farm I milked 4 cows twice a day . First tie thier tail ,second have a milking chute to lock thier head in and feed them grain or some hay. We used to put some black molasses on the hay and they love it. But my best advice is to get your cows used to you putting your hands on them,we found that using a hand brush and they love to be brushed just stop if the react to it and go slow. Make your self a one leg milking stool and go slow when you first wash thier utter and teets and always use warm water when you clean them before you milk them. Be prepared by putting some loose hay or straw behind the cow before you start milking them. They seem to urinate or poop when you milk and the loose straw will keep the back door products from spattering on you and keep it out of the milking pail. If you get a kicker hobble thier back legs or you might get a lesson about how hard a cow can kick you. Good luck you can do this just learn the patients and a soft voice will get you farther then yelling or being rough with the cow. Once they trust you and they get into a routine they will be waiting for you to milk them. Cheers

Things are looking up over all with the exception of the lost goat of course. Adding the cow comes as no surprise after seeing the video where you visited the farm. It does create another decision that you need to make each day. Are you having cow milk today or goats milk ? 😃 It would be nice if all the farming decisions were that simple. Right ? The farm is truly growing and becoming more diversified. So far I'd have to say it has been a very successful endeavor that I'm sure you and Pascale are justifiably very proud of. Thanks for keeping us all current.

Congrats on the cow. Sorry about the goat. Rabbits doing well. Same for the chicks and pigs. Spring cleanup and planning for summer and fall harvest. Lessons learned, making changes for '24.

My Grandparents lived on a farm and had a large garden every year. They would can there excess crops and labeled each jar with name of vegetable, date, and comments. They kept up to 5 years of canned food because some years drought, insects, or animals would reduce the size of the harvest. The fifth year they would empty the oldest canned food jars and recycle the jars. They always had food to eat even during hard times.

Getting a bit slack with your domestic duties Troy, 2nd time in 2 weeks I've seen Pas in an un-ironed FRH shirt. Apparently the best time for guys to build a relationship with cattle, is before they develop teeth 🤷‍♀🐮🤠

Another great episode! Sorry about old mate the goat. Still, your flock & produce is increasing so well & they’re happy well kept animals & gardens! I’m looking forward to the first feed of rabbit, with the french background perhaps Lapin au vin? And sad as it was Goan curry goes great for goat meat.

Troy .. very concise, well presented and explained .. one small thing however.. while I think I may have a 'broad' idea of the general layout of your joint, but, with those last two (or three) spots where you were showing the soil and grass condition, I got a little bit lost as to where you were. Could it be an idea to draw up a diagrammatic plan of the "Ramshackled Ranch" which you could maybe pop in the corner of the screen from time to time to show your location on the property? Cheers, and thanks for the Vid. Pots.

Sorry to make this obvious, but here n the UK, we have been led to believe that their in Australia you have loads of flies, and have been always told that you have your Tilly hat with corks on the end to chase the flies away, 🤔🤔 or have we been told fibs. Keep great work, great family

Is that a Jersey cow or a guernsey I used to think it was a spelling choice but apparently there are two separate breeds. Anyway great for milk so look forward to lots of Butter making and cheeses :) I used to help milk on a cousins farm he had Jerseys and Friesian cows the Jerseys were always the most affectionate and docile if there was going to be trouble it was always with the Friesians. I have a few steers for meat coming on, on some ones advice I have got them addicted to cheap (superwine here in NZ) biscuits, wave a bicky and they will come running. Remember like most ruminants they struggle to see you when you are stock still so wave the bicky and stay stillish so they focus on that. On the pasture here in a cooler moister climate we have the same issues though later and less extreme on the fire front but still a potential problem the steers are doing a great job of solving that issue.

I have learned more about farming on this channel than in the first 18-20 years growing up around farms. But I had a dirt bike back then.

My ex-FIL was a dairy farmer here in Wisconsin and started farming in a suburb of Milwaukee which is famous for breweries. He moved west of Milaukee and still traveled regularly into Milwaukee with his pick-up to get brewers grain for his cattle.

Good Nz morning. First thing I have to say is, "Praise the Lord " you have a cow. Yes in a previous life, I was dairy farming, mainly Friesians. However we started with Jerseys...actually a throwback to the original small size that started on Jersey Island, which could handle adverse weather conditions, particularly in summer. Go easy on her food intake. One of our senior dairy consultants, told me that she's not eating for two, her intake is sufficient for both. You can end up with a huge calf that she has to squeeze out. But once she's calved, then you pile on the feed. Do you have plenty of saved tucker? Remember, you can never overfeed milking cows. You just can't. Just a hint, I'm not sure what months silage and hay are harvested over your way, but rather than producing it off your block, buy it. You're buying in fertility. I don't know anything about the brewers mash as a supplement. I wouldn't feed the stuff to cattle. Could be a risk of bloat.? But if it's free, what have you got to lose.? Here endeth the lesson. 😂 Thank-you for sharing. Love your channel. Take care.
