Regarding tramp art: My Great Grandmother used to feed the "tramps" that would steal rides on the train cars during the depression. As a thank you they made her several pieces of art. She had a bowl, an a beautiful box, and several picture frames. I personally love my family's connection to this particular art form.

I too remember stories from my Gramma, Mom, and her sisters about the 'tramps' walking to their farmhouse from the train tracks not far from their home. They told of stories during the depression of these men making things from trash or found objects as gifts for the kind folks, like my Mom's family, who fed them. Some would do small jobs for the food, while others made things as thank you gifts. Some folks were afraid of them, of the stories from my family never mentioned any of these 'travelers' being anything but kind. I feel the tiny home movement as being similar to those times in many ways. Folks doing what they can to live a good life for themselves often moving from place to place where they can find work to feed themselves.

This is what my grandmother said about tramp art. Hobos and men looking for work during the depression would make these pieces out of trash and broken things they found traveling and trade them for food poor money.

When I was a toddler, we lived in a little house that was about 200 feet from a railroad track. My mom kept a ceramic mug for the hobos who came to the door for water. She would hand it through the door, then wash and keep it for the next taker.

Tramp Art is the original re-purpose product. The common element is that it be made from salvaged trash, cast-off items and objects. That's the "Tramp" element.That is why popsicle sticks, match sticks, and off-cuts are mainly the materials used.

Oh yeah. We had a tramp art matchstick cross in the house when I was little in the late 70s. I have a picture of me with it. I was obsessed with it for some reason. I think it was made in prison.
@bevmacdonald90083 ай бұрын
@@leeluvslife 😄 nice! The art style enjoyed a resurgence in the mid 1970s when Helaine Fendelman published a book about it. The practice had faded away (along with most tramps) into obscurity with the relative affluence of the post-war economy. Whenever popsicle sticks are the main material, you can tell it is a post-war creation. Cigar boxes and fruit crates adorned with off-cuts are more likely pre-1940s

Like 'trench art' is done by soldiers using readily available shell casings, etc; 'tramp art' is tramps using easily available wood scraps to make decorative boxes, frames, etc. Somehow, no matter who made it, each piece seems to be instantly recognisable as tramp art.

Anyway, I cleaned it up and sold it for $50 about 15 years ago.

I'm actually surprised you guys didn't know about Tramp Art simply because it was one of the first art forms that specifically used discarded items to make art. Not just popsicle sticks. Cigar boxes were popular, scrap wood, etc. That's just like soo up The Sorry Girls ally. Lol but also, it's not super surprising either because there's also not much written documentation on Tramp Art from when it was first being made. This was art that was made in the spare time of the working class. It might also have a lot to do with The Arts and Crafts Movement which sought to put producing quality made utilitarian and beautiful items back into the hands of artisans instead of a factory. I'm not an art historian so I don't know if they are related, but to me they do have some parallels. Also, can we talk about how Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp are filled with MCM listing's that are not MCM. 😂 I feel like it's become a thing to add that in the title just to draw attention.

I actually made a popsicle stick DIY shelf for my wall when those hexagonal shapes were all the rage?! I still think it's cute! I put pinecones in mine, forest vibes, but you can style whatever you want in there, and it was a quick and easy DIY. Just make sure your initial 6 sticks dry up a bit in the perfect shape, and then it's mindless glueing. Also, make sure you don't buy CROOKED POPSICLE STICKS. They exist, and they suck. loll
