One of the reasons I have always liked this channel is because Lillie and Bryce (sorry if I misspelled) have always come off as honest and maintained their objectivity. Rarely dip into "carnivore" community content anymore, but when I do, it is places like this. I am a four (4) year carnivore who has a learned lot through trial and error, including that excessive fat intake is not necessarily a good thing.

Why at this point I really just Follow Lillie, Sally K Norton & Paul Saladino. They are just realistic and positive which is very refreshing as apposed to being told eating a piece of Romaine Lettuce is the equivalent of swallowing a cyanide capsule… I also recently see on social media from guys like Sean Baker a trend of Bullying and making fun of Vegans which although I am a Carnivore I feel if someone loves animals and dosent want to eat them because of that, their decision to not eat Meat should be respected not made fun of…

I’m going to do the lion diet for awhile to get away from butter. I may have some pork belly or beef trimmings to give me the fat I need instead of butter. I know the lion diet is supposed to be only ruminant meat, but I’ll see how easy or hard it is to get beef trimmings.

That's why I just started carnivore. I do have hypothyroidism as well, but my reason for trying this out was that I very suddenly started **really** struggling with my memory and was slurring & forgetting my words as well. I just turned 40 three months ago. We have a family history of earlier onset dementia as well. I am hoping this saves my brain from checking out too early. I already feel way calmer and it's easier to think and recall things after just a week. Too soon to tell but seems promising. If u c this, would you mind telling me what you generally eat daily? I've been carnivore for about a year and a half, and my opinion is that there are a bazillion things going on with weightloss. It's always gonna be different for each person, and it can be way more complicated than simply "eat a ton of butter and watch the body weight just melt off!" I think there can be TWO types of fat loss: the kind that happens when you stop eating crap and your hormones like insulin come under control (as well as other satiety signals), and the kind that comes with creating an energy deficit. In the first type, someone can probably switch to a carnivore diet and lose a bunch of weight right away (my buddy lost like 20 pounds in a month), but when you become much more balanced in the hormone and inflammation game, you'll probably start having to think about the second way to lose weight, that is, creating some sort of calorie deficit. Your body is not stupid! It's not going to burn body fat before it burns that stick of butter! It will make ketones from the fat you eat first, before it dips into body fat. Why would we expect it to be otherwise? And the body can store fat even without an insulin spike from carbs. But then creating a calorie deficit while remaining truly satiated and feeling good becomes a complicated game. There is a difference between a fast that feels forced and a fast where you feel excellent, as if you have all the energy you need. What are the factors that separate the two? Or, if we don't want to fast, how do we get away with eating less but still feeling satisfied? Maybe the trick is to eat a wider variety and thus get more nutrient-rich foods? I'm not so sure, because sometimes (in my personal experience) a toxicity or intolerance FEELS LIKE A DEFICIENCY. For example, when I start to add lots of dairy in, and thus technically get more nutrients, I start feeling as if I'm developing a deficiency. I get way more hungry, start waking up ravenous, and feel way more groggy. I end up eating way more daily. When I cut way back on dairy stuff, that growing sense of deprivation essentially disappears. (I am not saying to not eat dairy!) And how many of us are drinking way too much coffee and ruining our gut health? You ruin your stomach acid, and a whole plethora of bad crap will happen, which will likely in turn mess up fat loss and satiety. Also, in some people, coffee can raise insulin all kinds in meals without carbohydrates. I guess my ultimate point is that topics such as weightloss are always going to be multifaceted and potentially complicated. People are going to react differently to different foods, even if they're carnivore, and the only real tool any of us has in self-experimentation. We rely on others' anecdotes or points of view to help ourselves troubleshoot the speedbumps that can pop up on this WOE, but if something is clearly not working (like forcing down a stick of butter a day), be prepared to think outside the box.

Thank you!!! Great explanation! Question, as I am a coffee drinker. I've done research on the the diff to your body that the caffeine does and I eliminated caffeine and switched to a water processed (not chemical) decaf coffee. Is it the caffeine, or the coffee in general?
@chrisdykmans9683
@chrisdykmans9683 Жыл бұрын
@@lisaleitch I think caffeine is the main problem, but also the bazillion other chemicals in coffee. I read somewhere that caffeine can deplete pepsin, the main digestive enzyme for breaking down protein, and other stuff in coffee can weaken stomach acid as well. I'd check out Stephanie Keto Person for more info on coffee. In my opinion, coffee and it's potential harm isn't talked about nearly enough in regard to its potential harm. For example, beyond potential gut issues, I've heard it can hinder/stall collagen synthesis and lower dhea levels-no bueno! Anyway, what's most telling to me is my experience in giving it up temporarily. I've given it up for a month before, and wholly cow could I tell the difference in digestion. On carnivore, my digestion improved drastically, even while still drinking coffee, and I thought my digestion was solid. However, when I cut out coffee for a month, my digestion like skyrocketed, in the sense that I could handle much larger amounts of meat wayyyyyyyy easier, like without feeling stuffed, nauseated, or getting excessively sleepy after a large meal. To be more specific, I'd say that while still drinking coffee, I could handle like 2.5 pounds of meat per day pretty well. When off coffee, I could handle like 4-5 pounds of meat per day and even more easily. I was blown away. Satiety got better. Minor joint paint like disappeared entirely. My gym gains were crazy for three straight weeks as well. Electrolyte balance/hydration seemed to feel way better as well. Stomach acid is huge, and in my experience, coffee can lower the acidity drastically. Messing with stomach acid in any way, in my opinion, is the easiest way to stall your results on this WOE. Hahah, all that being said, I've gone back to drinking a cup or two a day, but I am planning on taking the plunge and just going cold turkey soon, just because I can still tell it weakens my stomach acid and hinders my digestion.

@@chrisdykmans9683 Thank you for all that! I normally drink 2 cups of Peets decaf in the morning. Just cause I like it. I wish someone would split out the difference of caffeinated vs decaffeinated. I was nutrient deficient when I was mostly vegetarian. I would eat 3000-4000 calories most days (I ran 3-4 hours a day so I actually burned it all off, believe it or not, for over half a year). But the calories would all be from low fat yogurt, milk, berries and salads. I didn’t consume much meat at all, or fats. I tracked my calories and made sure my fat intake was below 20 grams a day. I made sure to get almost no saturated fat at all in my diet. I would eat endlessly, I would go to eat with friends and order two entrees for myself, then clean their plates off too. I wasn’t getting enough nutrients, and that’s why I was constantly hungry all the time. Now I eat a pound of ground beef around noonish and I’m basically not hungry for the rest of the day. It’s great. Calories aren’t the whole picture. Nutrients matter too. Macronutrients as well.

I'm probably at 1-2 sticks of salted butter a day. I'm at the leanest I've been since my 20s, maybe ever. I think tallow etc. are great, but butter does have a fantastic omega 3 to omega 6 ratio, I view that as very cardio-healthy-protective. I'm NOT gaining weight. I experience that all the butter puts me thoroughly in a fat-burning metabolism, so I burn not just the butter I eat, but the fat on my body. I'm also muscular as I've ever been, no protein deficit. I eat less than 2 pounds of meat per day, probably more like one-half to three quarters pound of beef and 6 eggs are my "base" protein. Basically I cook everything in butter and love the taste. Electrolyte problems are NOT connected to butter per se but to ketosis, IMO. That means take more (iodized) salt, potassium (lite salt), magnesium (MagDelay), to replace that being lost. Sleep, energy, etc. all great.

I was gaining weight eating higher protein, so adding more butter has been a godsend. But if you upped that butter to 3 or 4 or more sticks of butter per day, you would reach a point where you would gain weight. Excess digested 'energy' gets stored for when your body needs it. If you are eating excess energy, your body's processes are designed to save it for later use. You absolutely can gain weight on fat (just like any food) if you overeat it. 'Fat doesn't make you fat' is only true once your body heals from all the insulin resistance / sugar poisoning that years of the SAD has caused. But our body will send the proper signals so we csn stop eating as long as we haven't broken them. But we have to actually pay attention to the signals. If we keep eating more and more, and ignore the signals, we will gain weight. One can also under eat and wreck their metabolism also causing weight gain. The overall end result that works will require trial and error to find.

Ate two pounds of meat every day for 2 years and stayed exactly the same weight, plus or minus one pound over the entire time. Added a stick of butter and lost 5 pounds over the next 10 days. Then got sick and added coffee and heavy cream because it soothed the throat, and with 3-ish cups a day for two weeks, gained 10 pounds. Stopped the coffee and the weight is coming right back off. The heavy cream sure seems to be much worse, at least for me. Coffee has been a problem every single time I have tried it. I am coming from severe diabetes though and I think that makes a difference. I also think I was undereating for my size and activity level. As a carnivore, I think overeating is far better of an error than undereating, less chance of negative consequences. I do believe that animal fat is better than butter. The more fat, and really limiting protein seems to be very important if one is diabetic. The diabetes really messes with excess protein. When people are healthy, the protein does not seem to be nearly as much of a problem. I believe when one's metabolism is working correctly, it tends to work with the protein much better, and whatever it prompts to turn to sugar gets use up easier. Most of the successful, long term, carnivores I listen to talk about craving fat and protein at different times. I do think if the signaling is all working correctly, your body will tell you what it wants. Using the mind to decide seems to make it very easy to throw things off, though it is extremely hard not to do this. Adding the butter really changed the drier skin I was experiencing. My skin and nails have loved it. I think this would work with any good fat source though, I do the butter because it is easy to get. The journey is different for everyone, there are many, many factors that contribute to it. I like the openness so that we can all share the experiences. Although I think there is an appropriate human diet, I do believe individual circumstances will mean that each step is going to be somewhat unique for us to approach whatever level of health we can obtain. Hopefully we all move in the right direction, at least.

That's interesting, I've always been using and eating tallow ever since I was on the carnivore diet and when I started eating the 1 stick of butter a day, I didn't use the butter as a replacement but more of a supplement. Like I stated before, I actually lost weight eating a stick of butter a day throughout the day. I wondering if people are actually using butter as a replacement for other fats.

If you’re eating 2 lbs of meat, you are INVARIABLY not in ketosis and still are primarily a sugar burner. Look at Baker’s A1c of 6.3. Cut your protein in HALF and DOUBLE your fat and see what the results are The problem is you can’t get anywhere near enough fat eating ribeye in proportion to the excess protein you’re going to consume. Butter is absolutely key to getting enough fat in proportion to your protein intake. It’s not the butter that you’re adding to your 2 lbs of meat that’s the problem. It’s the 2 lbs of meat. Spiking sugar and insulin. Then your body is using that sugar for energy. So the butter you’re eating isn’t being used for energy and is just getting stored. Try this experiment: cut your protein intake to 100 grams daily and increase your fat intake so that you maintain the same caloric intake as the 2 lbs meat days. See how your body comp responds.

This is true. There seems to be this common theme that eating carnivore allows you to bypass the concept of calorie control as if it no longer applies. It DOES apply. Eat too much of anything and your body will store it. Eating all the meat you want will work for a while because it is what you are NOT eating....that is complex carbs, sugar and processed crap. That weight loss is the reduction of water and inflammation. Long term, learn how to be always be just a little bit hungry....go to bed at night not full, but with the ability to eat if you could.

Practice fasting also. Once you do a good long fasting and learn to control craves and hunger, it isn't a bother to feel hungry. Now depending on many things depends on protein fat ratios. If you have a workout routine like me, you need high of both. I will eat 12 to 18 eggs a day and ½lb of butter and 1 to 2 lbs of red meat. Not counting a cup of yogurt and or some cheese. I stay mostly away from chicken meat because of cortisol hormones. I work out to fail with low weights but I do it 4 times a day! Technically in one day. I do 4 workouts same routine. Yesterday I did curls and pullups. I do 2 sets of 25 of each. 3 to 4 times a day. I also do the 30:30 rule of eating high proteins then working out 30 minutes later. In one day I will do 150 to 200 repetitions.

Dang I needed to hear this. I've been trying to work up to choking down a stick of butter a day (been watching youtube people that swear by it) and I gag thinking about it. I'm so glad to hear that eating high fat foods is plenty of fat for this diet. I love the ribeye's and I LOVE crispy chicken skin, tons of eggs cooked in some butter etc............Since I started a month ago I have had sooo many amazing changes already. I really feel like I'm getting enough fat from what I eat in a day. Thanks for the video!

Yah, it’s gaggy for me too until I sprinkled some stevia on it 🤤 (don’t come for me 😂 ) it tastes like that thick bakery frosting I used to eat by the spoonful, I think it was made from lard & sugar. I whip the butter up with stevia put it in a covered dish in the fridge & eat a spoonful every now & then when I’m craving sugar 🍰 maybe = about half a stick a day. Has helped with my sugar cravings!

I eat about 4 burgers per day with goat cheese on top and about 4-5 tablespoons of salted butter on the side. I eat about 1600-1700 calories per day and wasn’t sure if I’m eating too much or too little. I haven’t lost any weight, but I’ve also had some hiccups along the way since I manage to munch on my kids snacks. I’m putting a stop to the snacks so I can get into ketosis and experience the amazing benefits.

Bright recommends no more as a general rule of thumb 1 stick of butter to 1lb of meat. That's 1300 of calories from ribeye to 800 calories from butter as on example. The 800 calories from meat + 800 calories from butter seems way to small on meat which makes sense why someone would run into nutrient issues. But people also need to track what they eat. If you also consume eggs, yolks and all, you can easily cut back on the butter. Heck if you eat ribeyes + egg yolks, you could easily go without butter as you are mostly likely going to consume the fat from the ribeye and eggs. But if you do ground beef, usually the fat melts out of the meat and is left in the pan, so in this case, butter would help.

Cut the carbs, sugars and learn intermittent fasting. If you are still grazing you are not giving your digestive system time to relax this being chronic inflammation keeping insulin levels up. You can't burn fat if your insulin. Levels are frequently spiked.

Not everyone has those results from butter though. It's nice to hear other sides, but let's be honest, many have amazing results from just butter, meat, salt, water. Electrolyte issues are not caused by eating a lot of butter. It's from being in ketosis and flushing of fluids from the body that comes with that.

It’s crazy to think that these gurus “hate” the term counting but yet they are still using it when they are trying to add in fats or protein or visa versa. I was dropping weight and kept it off when just eating a simple low carb diet, even when I splurged and craved, my hormones were regulating, I was feeling less insulin resistant and had more stable energy, less bloated, but, now though, I’m becoming obsessed with adding in more butter and cooking a ton with it, and lowering my protein feeling less satiated and more hungry throughout the day, and now I’m bloated and swollen in my face, neck, and fingers, and have now missed my ovulation! It’s screwing up everything that I’ve worked so hard to get to where I wanted to be this whole past year. Why are we being told to consume 200 g of fats a day when our grandparents and ancestors never lived by this rule? They ate until they felt satiated with Whole Foods, mostly meat, didn’t add in the crazy 6 servings of plants, added in butter for taste and just simply used lard or tallow for sautéing and that was it. They never went out of their way and measured and counted to see if they’re meeting their quota. I get influencers have KZbin channels and get paid to upload and use it to build a business and I get that some of it is helpful and useful because I wouldn’t have improved my health without this knowledge, but now it’s just becoming more forced than anything instead of becoming a helpful tool, and in the end it’s potentially causing our cortisol levels to rise from being stressed. None of it is good.

Fat diversity = nutrient density, got it. Cheese, cream, bacon, fatty ground beef, coconut oil, olive oil and butter are my go to fat sources. I take 500mg magnesium glycinate daily, because magnesium is such an important mineral and its very hard to get enough from food alone. I have recently discovered that the RDI for magnesium is set too low and 500mg should be the minimum people take, man or woman. Magnesium is also a cofactor for better absorption of Vitamin D3 + K2 as well as vitamin C. Be well my fellow fat-heads.

- Dr Elizabeth Bright actually created the butter thing. She was wanting to make it simple for her patients to visualize what to eat. We can typically buy a pound of meat and a stick of butter easily. She is 5’ tall, does not work out for hours and does not run every day. She has regretted this as it has been taken to an extreme. Many influencers fail to recognize they read her book. She also advocates eating meat fat. Meat fat is hard to visualize and quantify. Even our nutrition data is flawed because meat is much leaner in today’s market place. We also can’t buy a stick of tallow or lard. I can buy a pound of lard in a box the size of a pound of butter in my area. You have to cut it into 4 pieces. If you search PKD they recommend 80 / 20 in their clinic. They use animal fat not butter. It removes any issue with sensitive patients.

YES, in general it can be a nutritional deficiency and / or starvation signaling issues (nerve) combined with hormonal issues / hormones out of balance (brain, adrenals, thyroid, neurological,..many possibilities). However, I am sitting on a plane next to an oncologist colleague, he said - Never rule out hypothalamic obesity. Don't rule out the need for a brain scan just to be safe. (Tumor, damage, malformation at birth,...). Some people "fail" at a diet or any eating plan because of an underlying health condition / issue / disease.

Aren't all these people gaining because their not in a state of ketosis and not lowering their protein while doing this? Eating lots of protein w lots of fat will make you gain. It's either low protein and high fat Or just eat meat not upping the fat and see how you do. Stephanie keto person recommends as low as 45-65g protein 200g fat, she looks great and ripped for her age. I do tend to think people doing keto in general look better than others so it offers something to think about. So there's either carnivores in ketosis or not. I feel like thats what it comes down to?

One possible explanation of how you react to high fat is your level of insulin resistance. Higher fat and lower protein will result in lower blood glucose and insulin. Since you two are already very fit and active, you likely have healthy glucose and insulin management.

Since I track in Cronometer, I also realized how much less micronutrients I got when I tried the "stick of butter"-approach. And as I also cut back on protein, the amounts of nutrients I got during the day was way less than I get when I'm eating an animal based diet. I know that some people seem to thrive on this approach, but I'm a bit concerned for people that does it for a longer period of time. It's really difficult to get all the micronutrients you need on that approach. Not that I think that it's necessary to hit all the targets on Cronometer every day and it's certainly possible that the RDA:s are set to high on some micronutrients, but still...🤔

Believe from Dr. Bright starting the 1-2 sticks a day? Her focus is for post-menopausal women with history of ED. No focus on “weight loss”. She said lose weight first (not body fat), then gain muscle. Now seems many “influencers”, pushing the butter. Maintain/building of lean muscle mass is what makes me apprehensive to up butter and lower protein. More muscle means lower insulin levels.

I’ve upped my butter intake recently and overall I feel ok BUT after taking in large amounts of butter (I often drink it with heavy cream and boiling water & add lots to my food) my gut doesn’t feel 100% and my fat levels have risen. I judged the fat level by looking at my vascularity. I was getting pretty muscular/veiny but the increase in butter has halted that progress. Now, I’m only 10 weeks into being carnivore and still experimenting so I’m happy I tried it but I know first hand heavy intake in butter (& cream) will add fat to my physique and take me out of that lean/mean/sculpted physique shape I’m looking to achieve and maintain. Good video guys!

I can’t have dairy more then 2-3xs a months so I should have known better about the butter. I just getting better for get a horrible chest/head cold for the first time in years! Like you said not everyone will be affected this way, so you don’t know until you try. I’m disappointed in my weight gained in my body & face but I’m happy to know it doesn’t work for me. So I have to work hard to loose the extra fat now

The ‘small’ amount of lactose in butter was creating a whole lot of bloating for me. Insane gas bubbles pushing up against my heart, causing heart palpitations. Furthermore, the lactose was spiking insulin, creating inflammation and weight gain. NO MORE stick of butter for me!

Loved this video! I have been wondering about the butter issue and how some people do eat a stick a day. This put it in perfect perspective for me! Thank-you so much...I get it now!

As soon as I added extra butter I started gaining weight! This was a year after I started carnivore that I added extra butter to deal with meat aversion. It helped with the aversion but the weight gain was noticeable. 😮

Lots of times I just crave butter after my one meal a day I’ll sit back and eat 1/4-1/2 stick of butter after I already had a 1/2 stick with my meal!

One more. Reading through all the comments. I do believe higher fat has to be done with lower protein. All those feeling hungrier on higher fat were likely producing sugar with too much protein, which will cause fat storage, hunger with the insulin spike, and the protein and sugar cause a greater insulin effect, at least as I understand it. Ben Bikman talks about this a lot. Why I think diabetics must watch protein and why they are advised to start with very high fat, but it likely does this in healthy individuals as well, with high levels of muscle being the hedge against it. ( Why people like Chaffee and Baker get away with high protein )
