I think the reason people hate the Dipper flirting/Grunkle tries to bang spider episode so much is because it was a filler episode near the end of the final season. Gravity Falls fans are fucking crazy about lore so thats probably why its rated so low.

It's because we are right before the penultimate finale of the series, that's been building up since the FIRST episode, and we get a random fucking episode about going on the equivalent of a field trip and the characters are heavily OOC considering the episodes leading up to it (they should be inside the Bill-proof shack, realistically speaking he could win right now) but that's because it was supposed to be in season 1 rather than 2. Doesn't make the episode any less shit.

It's terrible for where it's placed. If it was a season 1 episode it would've been perfect. But before this episode Dipper finally gotten over Wendy in one episode and they implied Dipper might have feelings for Pacifica in another episode and the episode prior Ford put some unicorn hair around the house to keep them safe from Bill. And what is the episode about? A roadtrip about Dipper trying to get over Wendy. Its a fine episode but it sort of ignores 2 important things about the show. Sure GF fans are obsessed with lore but the road trip episode is hated for not remembering 2 important facts

the problem with "Roadside Attraction" is, not only the episode is awkward and has a bad script, but it's also a regression in the characters developments and the general plot of gravity falls, specially considering this episode came after the northwest manor episode and after The Last Mabelcorn. Even though I like the episode, there are a few understandable reasons that people don’t like Roadside Attraction. 1. The placement is off. It was supposed to happen earlier on in the season sometime before Not What He Seems, so it being shoved into the otherwise lore heavy Season 2B feels out of place. 2. Again, the placement is off, but this time lore-wise. At the end of The Last Mabelcorn, Ford says that, thanks to the unicorn hair, the family should be safe as long as they stay in the Mystery Shack. And then the very next episode has Stan taking them far outside the bounds of the Mystery Shack. The decision was explained later in the irl Journal Three, where Ford writes that he suggested Stan take them on the trip so they’d be out of danger if the rift to Bill’s dimension cracked open completely while he tried to find a way to fix it, but the initial frustration still lingers with a lot of fans. 3. The moral. Obviously it’s a good message, you shouldn’t flirt with people just to make yourself feel better, but the whole thing with Dipper is blown WAY out of proportion. He’s a twelve year old boy who was trying to learn to talk to girls on a road trip. There was no talk of exclusivity in any of the ‘relationships’ he formed, he literally just talked to these girls for fifteen minutes tops and got their numbers/emails. If he was shown actively flirting with them and acting like he wanted the relationship to be exclusive I would get it, but there’s no evidence that his behavior got even CLOSE to that. Overall I think its a really fun episode, especially with the design of the spider lady and how she transforms and the details that hint at her true nature, but there are definitely some issues that a lot of people just can’t get past.
