I don't think the Robert Hilanius fight has made wilder more tentitive because of the knock out. For example Rocky Marciano and Chris Eubank both famously would not throw as hard and hold back after they had paralysed opponents, but they would still throw hard and when they were behind on the scorecards a little of their old magic would come back into play. Rocky Marciano's KO of Wallcott was afterward and that's one of the best knockouts ever seen in the ring. Whereas Wilder just looks so worried to throw it at all because of the counter, both parker and Zhang were pushing him on the backfoot and would punish everytime he tried to throw the right hand I think that's the issue he's had. Rather than him reducing power due to that previous fight. His trainer is obviously not adjusting his style from that, it's obvious he needs to be more stick and move especially with that reach, that is the best way to nutralise a counter as Bivol showed with Canelo.
@4879daniel5 ай бұрын
He wasn't tentative after any of his other 40 odd knockouts - was happy to talk about killing an opponent back then. I think the beatings from Fury made him apprehensive about getting hurt.
@Nova-Franconia5 ай бұрын
Marciano was never gun-shy. He couldn’t be, because the way he had to fight (because of his physical disadvantages) wouldn’t have allowed him to be successful if he held back. Rocky’s fight vs Ezzard Charles as an example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6Spm2ubdp1_r9Esi=rMJWEXqKh9L04H_0 skip to around 8:40, that’s when the fight really gets going. Ezzard Charles, however, was very tentative when throwing, because he actually killed a man in the ring.
@MoralesCorner5 ай бұрын
@@4879danielyup he's aura went away after getting knocked spark out. After the second Fury fight he could told himself he wasn't done, his corner stopped it. After the third it was no doubt. He is not the same after that. His Helenius ko just was served to him, Robert walked right into that right hand. But we've seen with Parker and Zhang he's really not letting his hands go no more, he's definitely scared of being done again and see what happens. Sad to see cause I actually enjoyed Wilder's run in his hay day
@Alex-cw3rz5 ай бұрын
@@Nova-Franconia he was holding back on his punches, he could hold back a bit because his punches were so powerful and he is one of the most powerful punchers ever. They had to change the springiness of a boxing ring because boxers were slamming their head too hard on the canvas from a Marciano punch. That's how insanely powerful his punches were. Rocky vs Charles is a very good example because Rocky has a commentary for the Charles fight and he talks about holding back on punches in that and he was being humble about it as well. Marciano's closest ever fight was the one after he paralysed his opponent because he didn't want hit as hard.

Imagine if instead of Wilder v Stiverne for the vacant belt back in 2015 we had Chisora v Whyte for the WBC and then they spent the next 4 years ducking top tier opponents in favour of small-scale domestic dust ups with the likes of Fraudley Harrison, Sam Sexton, David Price, Michael Sprott, Danny Williams, David Allen, Ian Lewison, a washed up David Haye and a non-heavyweight Tony Bellew. It would basically be the same thing and they'd score a similar amount of defences/knockouts as Wilder but I guarantee we wouldn't be putting them on the same pedestal as being amongst the greatest of a generation. The fact Wilder's WBC reign was able to be protected for that long is a scandal in itself.

Huge props to Turki Alalshikh - always hugely positive, even with beaten fighters. Great to see a promoter actively putting the money into the sport. I'm not sold on Saudi involvement in all sports, but they're getting the boxing right.
@jamesdrakeford37875 ай бұрын
Yeah, he has been a revelation for boxing that's for sure. I'm getting greedy now but there are still a few things I'd like to see ironed out: 1) Watching the Canelo fight made me miss the atmosphere of UK and US fight nights. On the one hand, you've got to give props to Saudi rejuvenating boxing but it looks so joyless in Riyadh most of the time. Thankfully we will be getting a big Wembley card in September! 2) I'm not sure I have the stamina for these epic mega cards every fight night! Maybe because I live in Taiwan/Australia so they start in the middle of the night and end at lunchtime. 3) Sort out the nonsense of super champion, regular champion, interim champion, etc. Turki clearly has some clout by getting the IBF to allow Usyk to keep the belt for the rematch with Fury rather than being stripped and hopefully moving forward we will see less politicking from the governing bodies. Either that, or Saudi unify the different organisations into one division with proper ranking system rather than handing out free gifts to the likes of Ngannou. 4) Stop giving drug cheats a big payday. 'Big Pharma' Miller should never have been anywhere near the Day of Reckoning card and if repeat offenders like him are frozen out moving forward it would perhaps make fighters think twice before scrambling those eggs. The lads have spoken about most of these issues on the Propa podcast so I know I'm not alone in thinking it, but the changes to date are positive so far!
@ianmacfarlane12415 ай бұрын
@@jamesdrakeford3787 I certainly don't want to see this model becoming the only way to consume boxing outside of the USA, but it has a place in boxing promotion. For decades boxing has had no competition as a TV friendly combat sport - MMA has changed the landscape, meaning boxing has to adapt. Boxing needs big cards in Europe, but it's up to the promoters to deliver, so we can only hope that people like Frank Warren, Eddie Hearn and others step up and deliver the kind of cards that will see boxing maintaining some kind of relevance.

So they stripped Usyk from his IBF title, and in September two guys Usyk has already beaten convincingly will fight for this belt? Am I the only one who thinks this is a strange move?

AJ vs Zhang at Wembley would give the big Chinaman the payday he deserves as Dubois ain't ready yet for a title shot - definitely not ready to face an AJ on the blistering comeback mission he's on at the moment. Bosh 🥊❤️

Loved it bar Zhang vs Wilder, I was bored out of my fucking skull. Dubious was a dirty bugger with all those fucking headbutts, I counted at least 5, fun bloody fight though maybe the best. Ball and Ford was also contender for best of the night. Sheeraz was a fucking sniper, a really tactical fight from him.

DDD was also cut on the forehead from how many times headbutted Hergovic. Hergovic won all rounds but it was cut because of headbutts. The referee was with DDD on this one. DDD being from UK and stuff - this was a big robbery. They want to make DDD vs Aj.. big money I get it. I am shocked by only one thing - why is Hergovic not asking for a rematch and why is he not screaming robbery?? I think they told him - you get this match but it is rigged - you make whatever you can out of it but you cant win. So he took it and the industry beat him. But what a robbery it was.

That's an impressive amount of assumptions.

I did find it a bit strange. You can clearly hear the ref announcing that the first cut was from a headbutt and I’m pretty sure they all were. But they didn’t go to the cards when they stopped it so I dunno what the ref was at.

What a complete load of nonsense, take ya man’s loss and move on mate cause right now you sound like wilder after the second fury fight

Hrgovic didn't win every round - not by a long shot. He was barely interested. The cuts did impact the fight, but DDD was doing the more eye catching work and more of it.

Wilder must have thought he got elbowed to just turn back and relax expecting ref to step in. Protect self at all times, can't blame Zhang for taking advantage. But feel bad for the Wilder, he didn't even see shot coming and conked head hard off the canvas. His fight heart ain't there to be relaxing like that, no shame in it, dude did well enjoy the next chapter.

I really appreciate the channel giving a shout out to Wilder and what he accomplished for himself and his family. Obviously he was never the most technical guy, but shout out to this channel for respecting his accomplishments rather than just bashing the guy for his technical gaps. I love this channel for that reason, certainly I can expect to get a more Eurocentric view of the game but they always give everyone a fair shake. I’m a lifelong listener for sure after this one, and I don’t even like Wilder! I just like the fairness you showed him if this is, in fact, his last fight.

I had a great time watching and can’t wait to hear the next pod. I got more invested than I thought I might. I was surprised to find myself rooting for Williams mid fight. He seemed like such an underdog despite going into that fight with his 0 in tact. I even found myself rooting against Bivol. It wasn’t out of liking another boxer more and honestly the better fighters all seemed to win in the end so it makes sense. Very happy to see Dubois win, but damn he needs to tighten up his guard. Wilder was just sad to watch. I wanted him to win for the same reason you boys did, but the first round was telling. Once he started to throw it was over. Though I still don’t see how the first shot spun him so badly. Either way, great night of boxing. Let’s go AJ vs Dubois!

Wilder isn't throwing like he used to because he's fighting top tier competition finally. You can throw those go for broke punches when its against, Stiverne, Breazale, and other journeyment....but guys like Fury, Parker, and Zhang have the talent and ability to handle the power and actually deal damage back. Wilder is fun to watch deal highlight real knockouts, but he doesn't have the talent to do it against real competition.

His hearts just not in it anymore. You could tell after that one postfight interview. Hopefully this is his last fight because nobody wants to see a great fighter rack up losses at the end of his career.
