There are far too many of us who have already cut the cord for them to try to force any kind of involuntary tax on us, think of the uproar! The BBC (Buggering British Children) probably would struggle to find any company though that would be happy to associate themselves with a group who standby and knowingly cover up paedophilia and child molestation amongst their employees so I can possibly see that advertising may be a hard task for them but at least a Netflix style subscription service like ITV X would be a good shout. Why will it be harder ? The BBC want money and the government seem to want to make sure they get it, so if people start cancelling their licence on mass it will only force the government to act. A levy added to broadband or mobile phone bills or a fixed charge added to your council tax (they already take money for the police, fire, parish councils etc). There are many ways they can add a levy and there will be nothing anybody can do about it. My bet would be on council tax as non payment is a criminal offence.

In my province (Styria) in Austria our annual TV license is €343.80 which is also the highest in the world. It is ridiculous to pay that amount. I unplugged my TV 6 years ago after the first visit by these goons, I was not at home at the time. As English is my first language I have no need and no desire. I had a visit a few years ago while I was watching KZbin and the ape said I need a TV license for that. I told him to F off and never come back. €28.65 a month, my unlimited internet costs less, but then OK I have Netflix but add on 28.65 to that? No way.

I'll lay my cards on the table. Back in 1974 I was a BBC television trainee, and I am grateful for them for that. Like many of my colleagues in the day we subsequently used that training to obtain much better paid jobs in the commercial world. So I personally ought to thank the BBC for giving me that "leg up" so to speak, but that's how it goes. Back in the day, the BBC had a virtual monopoly on broadcasting in the UK and it seemed fair that if you wanted to use it you should pay for it. That has all changed now. The BBC does not have its monopoly any more . The concept of television license solely to fund the BBC seems so outdated, what's more with the threat of a criminal record if you are in default. I believe in the future there will be no compulsory license as such. There will be free to view channels, with advertising possibly, and subscription for anything else. It's quite possible that the average viewer will be paying well above the current license fee, but it will be up to them and no fear of a criminal prosecution if they don't want to pay. I

As a man in his 40s, I still can't wrap my head around this system where they take it as given that everyone in the country should contribute to pay for the BBC. It's an absolutely insane system and became outdated the second there was more than one broadcaster. The last time Aside from watching Doctor Who from 2005 to 2015 (and even that I gave up on for how poor the writing got and how often it made derogatory digs at men), the last time I ever watched the BBC was in the 90s when I used to watch Red Dwarf and the BBC2 repeats of old TV shows. Since then, nothing.

That's completely wrong, not sure where you're getting your information from. The domestic rates was replaced by the community charge (poll tax). This was then replaced by the current council tax. The three systems are different, council tax is more in line with the rates as it is about the value of the property. Poll tax was based on the number of occupants, which to be fair makes more sense as its people that put demand on local services not houses.

The poll tax was based on occupants yes but that was not the point, the point was an additional tax on local constituents which would go directly to a local administration to pay for local services such as bin collection. The council tax does exactly the same thing. Making a minor change to how you calculate the tax doesnt make it a whole new thing. No offense but if you seriously think renaming it and making some very minor amendments to the calculation of the tax makes it a whole different thing then I have a bridge to sell you, also I am selling the Eiffel tower as scrap if you are interested in that too.

It wasn't on face value as you said, it wasn't an additional tax it was a change in the method of calculation from the rateable value of the dwelling to one based on the the number of occupants, this is why there were the riots because people were angry as it would effectively mean poorer larger families would pay more than someone with a larger house. Council tax reverted the method based on intrinsic value of property rather than the demand on services. Little knowledge and a lot of Internet are a dangerous thing.

It wasnt just a change at all, it was a tax which was proposed in the 80's and tried to be enacted which the public refused to pay. There was no "change" the council tax was later proposed to do the same thing. I have to pay council tax and I was there when they tried to enact the poll tax, I know exactly what I am talking about.

A "household levy" is a poll tax levied whether you watch the BBC or not. The BBC licence is unfair if you never watch BBC. The label "Public service broadcaster" includes a lot of stuff that the public disagrees with and doesn't want to see because allegedly "public service" programmes are made that hardly anyone wants to watch and pretty much no one would pay to watch, other than (for example) opera fans, avant-garde atonal classical music fans and fans of parliamentary proceedings 24/7.

Also we cannot watch ITV/CH4/CH5 as anything that was recorded live or is live means needing a licence and if we watch those on Freeview we have to pay a licence because BBC is also on there and we cannot prove we didn't watch their channels, they used to claim (not sure if still do) but if you have an aerial connect to the TV you had to pay, you also pay full if you had a VHS recorder even though you only had a Black n White TV because you could watch in colour later, as I had a VHS player on rental from Rumbelows (long time ago), my mum had a B&W licence I was told to take it back or she would be fined, insane.

That isn't fair on anyone who do not own a TV let alone anyone who doesn't watch live broadcast TV. If it goes on the council tax then direct debit will be cancelled and a cheque sent without the TV levy on it.
