We Took Over the Podcast!

With David on vacation this week, Marques and Andrew are confined to the producers table and Ellis and Adam run the show. We talk about a ton of small news from this week and last week. What starts as a discussion about Apple Vision Pro accessories and a new Garmin watch quickly turns into messaging app update madness, a rant about Reddit, and Apple introducing new features and dropping a brand new app. Plus, Marques and Andrew try to get some trivia revenge. Two thoughts: 1. Adam and Ellis are - unsurprisingly - completely natural in their new roles. (This is a permanent change, right?) 2. Marques' immediate regret at the temptation of the soundboard is everything we could have imagined.

The Forerunner 165 is a great idea to sort of leapfrog the current baseline Forerunner 55 model, the issue is that the 265 and 965 models that came out last spring were such incremental upgrades over the 955 they’re not convincing people like myself to upgrade.. They gave the Venu series a serious spec bump with the Gen 5 HR sensor and AMOLED display, would be nice to see that upgraded sensor hit the Forerunner line.. Love the coverage of it though!

I'm not sure if Ellis is the youngest at MKBHD, but he reminds me of my cousin, who's the baby of our big family and seems to have absorbed the best traits from all of us. He's confident, sharp, and sometimes a bit awkward in the most endearing way possible. It's refreshing to see someone so full of charm and knowledge at such a young age. It's a testament to how the new generation is evolving. I'm a big fan of the studio team.

1:22:18 The funny thing is that I have always seen social medias as just platforms where you post stuff that people can interact with, not apps for messaging. I especially wouldn’t consider apps like WhatsApp social media because basically you can only send messages. (and pictures and so on)

WhatsApp is a huge social media app than you think. The group member limit is way over a thousand, and communities where all the social interactions are happening. Channels are now a thing, where you can follow your favorite celebrity or channel and get the latest updates instantly. Data transfer, screen sharing, voice and video calls, group conferences, cash transactions, a separate app for business, and so on are some of the features I would consider as social media.

But would what’s app have counted as a social media in the past when it had less of those features? The same goes for snapchat which is even less ”social media like” even though it absolutely has elements of it such as stories.

The battery life is great for the new Garmin but I picked up a Venu music for $250 a couple years ago and it seemingly has all the same specs. I'll have to see if the forerunner has better mapping which is the one thing that would be a sweet addition for doing trails instead of road running.

Great stuff! The Walmart Vizio data is really interesting. I work in programmatic advertising and the data they can use and how they can use it makes the move really smart. TV data is cookieless which means Walmart just made a huge land grab of data before Google makes everyone scramble for how they would target users without colkies in the future.
