We Tried Crazy Old School Boxing Exercises
Old school boxers were built differently. And fighting in this developing sport took courage, hands of stone, heads like cinder blocks and a variety of physically taxing exercises. Exercises which helped to create legends such as Joe Louis, Max Baer, Jack Dempsey, Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali.
In this video, we will attempt to try these exercises for ourselves: chopping trees, digging holes, jumping rope, using medicine balls and more, all in an attempt to see if we can keep up with an old school boxing workout routine. Wish us luck.

I swear the medicine ball has to be a troll from older trainers. You do all this practical, real world, based training (digging holes, chopping wood etc), then they're like; 'Now, you need to dive abs first onto a solid ball'... doubt they kept a straight face.

It actually makes plenty of sense. It's trying to replicate getting hit in the stomach. Usually they would have another person slam the medicine ball into them. Boxers still 100% do this. But if you are working out by yourself it will work to give impact. Also there is plenty of evidence that impact like that does actually stimulate those muscles in ways that direct ab exercise doesn't, plus you learn to exhale on impact.

So just to clear up something. Old school boxers DID have other shoes other than work boots or combat boots and in fact most of them didn't run in them, but people like Marven Hagler would intentionally wear boots to make his workouts harder. He wanted to add that artificial difficulty because he knew that when he was in the ring wearing his boxing shoes he would be moving even faster and it would take less effort and he could focus all his energy on the fight. Awesome video as always! Hope to you guys do more boxing related vids in the future!

Off of the top of my head regarding old school boxing: John L Sullivan - he was the birth of the sweater. He would jog with a think long sleeve shirt to induce sweating. We now use it to keep warm. Joe Louis would run six miles the day before a fight. Tony Galento was Nick named two ton Tony due to him being an iceman. He would carry blocks of ice up NYC apartment stairs to make money. He needed to sell two tons a day to earn enough money to raise his family (each block was fifty pounds) George Foreman usd to walk ten miles behind a pickup truck and punch a heavy bag hanging from the truck.

When you guys were digging and hit solid rock, that’s when the mattock comes out and you smash through the rock. KEEP DIGGING! Digging and wood chopping/splitting is where true KO power is built. Also if you feel beat up after training- Epsom salt bath, use 5-10 lbs of Espom salt and soak for 20-30 minutes.

I hate digging in Central Oregon. I live on a plate with about 3 inches of dirt on top. Anytime we need to dig a post hole we have to have a pick, sledge, and pry bar standing by as well as a wheel barrow to haul everything away. Lava rock is my nemesis growing up and my parents would often punish me for being unruly by telling me to "go pick rocks," as a form of punishment.
