I really liked this rifle during the evaluation and used it for whitetail this fall. As you said, it is very suitable for mixed terrain...shorter barrel, lighter weight, the synthetic stock and metal finish held up very well in jaggers, crab apples, etc. The 7mm-08 is an awesome cartridge...it dropped a whitetail in it's tracks.

When hunting in thick timber or hunting out of tree stand carbine is perfect. Lighter weight . Better balanced.20" barrel is perfect. Thats why a carbine.

Best hunting rifles currently on the market today for the money IMO. Fantastic trigger w/o those trigger blades that are becoming prevalent on most rifles nowadays. Anyone who swaps it out for an aftermarket trigger is nuts IMO. I'm not against trigger blades either, I own a rifle with one on it and like it very much. But some versions have their faults. The Weatherby Vanguard S2's possess a long list of great qualities IMO.

Depends on the size of your scope objective. I mounted a scope with a 50mm objective and am using high rings I believe. I installed weaver bases and then installed weaver extended rings... so I could move the scope further back to achieve the type of eye relief i needed. Weaver bases and rings are much simpler and very solid in design. I would say medium height would probably be fine with 40mm objectives. I would verify before purchasing tho.

Medium height rings will most likely work with a 42mm objective, but I can't say they will for certain. I'd refer to manufacturer specs usually listed on their websites.

I am not sure for longer range shooting on the 20 inch or the 24 inch barrel. range will be under 400 meters. I am less concerned about velocity and more interested in better harmonics due to the shorter barrel. What is your thoughts on this.

I would suggest contacting Weatherby with your question...they're the experts and can best answer your question. Also, check out the selection of Series 2 rifles now offered. Something else to consider...the Vanguars Series 2 rifles I tested do not have a free floating barrel.

Great review. I've looked hard at these in the standard length but just don't like rifles with 24" barrels and overall lengths of 44". The carbine intrigues me, though - 7mm-08 or .308. These get great reviews all around and I'd be hard pressed to think of a handier package for hunting whitetails in mixed terrain. Great job.

Thank you, I'm tired of watching guy's shooting! I did like the facts on the gun and I have been for awhile and will look more into this gun group. Weight and a threaded barrel are priority to me and I see the new guns all shoot tight. Thank you again for the facts.

I did a review on the Series 2 Stainless shown in this video in .243 (the complete written review and video is available at our website in the Product Reviews tab). For the money, the Series 2 line is an awesome rifle. I don't think the caliber would make any difference.

If you go to the Weatherby website and look at "frequently asked questions" you'll find out why the barrel isn't free floated. You'll also find out how bullet velocity can change due to barrel length. Basically just do a little research on the Weatherby website and questions posted here would be answered.

Great review, I am definitely looking into purchasing a Vanguard 2! Any chance of doing a review with the 24in barrel in a 7mm Rem. Mag.? I have a Smith & Wesson Model 1500 in 7mm Rem. Mag. But would like a newer Rifle with the same amazing characteristics as it.

Boris Chang A carbine just refers to a lightened, shortened version of a rifle designed to be fired from the shoulder instead of a supported position. Has little to do with the use of that rifle, everything to do with handiness.

***** I was at the range yesterday with this rifle to make sure the zero was still OK (getting ready for deer season). Using Hornady Superformance 139 gr GMX 7mm-08, three shots at 100 yards could be covered with a quarter. Maybe I'll throw my other rifles under the bus to get them to shoot this good.
