According to a bit of reading I've done in the matter: Putting food and snacks in the arm and chest pockets of the Smock was an intentional act, along with a secondary survival knife, survival/space/emergency blanket, map, and compass. The idea was that if wounded, or making a hasty fighting retreat, or out of ammo, or if the kit is damaged and unusable, you could shed the kit, but still have a Smock and space blanket for heat and emergency shelter, 1000 calories in sugarry snacks, and navigation equipment to find your way back to friendly lines. When I was in the army they called this school of thought: First Line, Second Line, and Third Line Kit. The Smock doubled as your emergency last line of kit.

Kidney pouches. 1 mess tin in each. One tin has hexi & blocks, brillo, tea towel 1/2. brew kit. Tin No.2 Rations. Also boot cleaning kit/housewife/spare socks & pants. 58 Bottle on the right side Resp on left side. small first aid kit in top right smock pocket. ADMIN /COMPAS in top left smock pocket. If not using Resp pouch, add a utility/water bottle pouch with a 44 or 58 bottle. Loved the 58 webbing, heavy yes, heavier when wet , Defo. Tabs & buckles did swell. But comfy, tough, Used it through Cdts & Regs and we did A.T,.C & FIBUA in it. carry 2 58 ponchos. they do fit in the bum roll. one as shelter the other as sleep system / bivvi bag. OR lose the kidney pouches and replace with utility/water bottle pouches all round then the left & right ammo pouches. Our belt order was always checked to ensure every one carried the same weight at 35 Lbs.

Fun video! Thing is, if one is hiking over relatively large distances (national parks, public footpaths and such), carrying a 16kg load makes a lot more sense on the hips using such belt kit than carrying a backpack or rucksack. Because one's centre of gravity is lower (s)he'll be a lot more agile and better balanced in various walking movements, hence covering longer distances much more efficiently. But, that being said, if one tries to hike wearing a British army belt kit, wouldn't he be stopped by a police or get weird looks from passerbys?

Recently bought the kidney pouches. As I thought basically the same material as Australian 88 pattern. Water weight easy fix. Scotchgaurd pump has a can into each pouch. I run it on a PLCE belt. Currently it's kidney pouches. Which I've altered. I took that silly top belt attachment off. Added a tab and a D ring as older Alice but packs had. Hunting a resi pouch atm. I will do same to that. I also sewed 2 tabs 50mm on end of each kidney pouches, add a Alice clip each end more stability End game plan is Alice harness. Plce belt and belt keepers X 4 to connect harness. I'll yun resi pouch rear, 2 Australian water bottles 1 either side. And cut the 58 kidney pouch one either side as we would have for SLR mag pouches. To solve the need for containers. Run 2 British Dixies to lock food in. I tried dry bags wrong shape too much room lost. I thought about sewing a snow collar on. In the end I got some old linen had 2 trials for size. Then made the final one out of waterproof khaki material made 2 X waterproof treated cotton rectangular fracturing bags. Works perfect. Toying with the idea of a 50mm webbing strap across the top at rear and sewing some flexible thin perspex or maybe say 3 layers of ice cream containers cut up to stabalise it but still have flex.

You need to bin the kidney pouches and large mess tin and beg, borrow or steel 3 or 4 water bottle pouches and a second small mess tin that's what we used to do or even bin both mess tins and just use a yank metal cup. By using thick black elastic looped around your pouches it helps to keep them snug stopping them from flapping around and rubbing the other thing some of the lads including myself used to do was ditch the belt for a roll pin belt or stitch the roll pin and some of the canvas belt to the issue belt. Basically mod it to how it suits you no one ever made do with just the issue kit, as the saying goes " any idiot can be uncomfortable" so don't worry about it being as issued for re-enactment as there is no hard fast rule. At least that is my experience having worn the stuff from leaving training in 1983 for 12 years until we were issued 95 PLCE. One final tip to make 58 look authentic is to grab some thick foam and masking tape it under the yolk shoulder straps and inside the belt to help stop it rubbing. Hope this helps cool vid

It worked for the British Army (with individual solder mods) in all terrains and environments for 30+ years. No where near perfect and it was getting very old fashioned when it was retired. However the principle of multiple pouches on a belt with a load carrying yoke is still being used. British soldiers don’t have the resupply logistics of US forces and some other countries so tend to carry more and be more self sufficient. Smocks are still worn, pockets are still filled. Other than the materials used the principles still hold true

@@AnvilAirsoftTV Just the webbing. Before a Combat Fitness Test (CFT) or a march and shoot competition you would get it weighed. With a pack it would be CEMO.

God damned overlap on military acronyms/mnemonics ... C3 used to be command control and communications... Now its a fucking Rolo 🤔😜😅 Glad Gadge's gear is also assembled with liberal swearing. It's not just for putting in gearboxes. You can use the bottom roll on the 58 pattern to secrete a bottle of badly made Vodka during school hiking expeditions, not that I ever did that with mine of course.

Chocolate Covered Caramel. No mention of commercial products please... ;) How much booze you can stash in webbing is probably a video. We might end up carrying more beer than water when lockdown restrictions ease and we’re allowed to ‘picnic’

Don't try this in very hot weather like in the US during the Summer... It will kill you...

It was just above freezing when we did this. Planning another one soon with PLCE.
